 Meet Jacqui Folks, Author

\n

\"\"

\n

Jacqualine “Jacqui” Folks is an author who lives in Eudora, Kansas with her husband, Mike. She is a busy mother of three sons; Bret, Ethan and Garrett. In 2003 Jacqui’s middle son, Ethan, was diagnosed with Autism. His diagnosis came at a time when resources for Autism were scarce and she found herself on a journey of self education to enrich the life of her child. Though she still found time to support her other sons on the soccer field, most of her time was spent in libraries learning all she could about Autism education, therapies and advocacy.

\n

In 2005 Jacqui started a support group for parents in her local community. Several years later the ladies she met through that journey joined forces and co-founded the Eudora ACES (Autism Community Education and Support) Society. ACES is a successful non-profit organization dedicated to helping other families with their journey through Autism and supplying necessary equipment and resources for special education classes in their school district.

\n

Jacqui wrote the Adventures With “Big E” social stories series as tools to help her young son on his journey with Autism and to offset the extremely high costs of therapy interventions and services. Highlighted in each story are methods she used for education, therapy and life skills. She longed for resources like these stories when her son was younger. Having a friendly character, repetition and illustrations at the ready would have been extremely valuable. So, through her unique children’s literature she is providing it for others. She also shares her story through videos on her Facebook page Au-some Talk.

Reminders about sharing your child’s diagnosis:

\n
    \n
  1. It is not your responsibility to manage your family’s response.
  2. \n
  3. You will discover who you can share openly with and with whom you will need to limit details.
  4. \n
  5. Don’t forget to be respectful to your child and their privacy when sharing videos or info in order to help others understand.
  6. \n
  7. Google “children’s books about autism” for stories you can share with your child.
  8. \n
  9. Seek the help of a counselor who can help you navigate grief, healthy boundaries and dealing with difficult or intrusive family members and friends.
  10. \n
  11. There is no “right way” to do this.

\n

7 Things To Give The Autism Sibs In Your Home:

\n
    \n
  1. Clear Expectations: This includes defining the term “fairness” as well as setting rules for how your children treat one another.
  2. \n
  3. Control Through Choices: When kids have control over their personal space and choices about how they want to be involved in autism, their anxiety lessens.
  4. \n
  5. Time: Mommy or daddy dates are a great way to give your child the extra attention they crave.
  6. \n
  7. Realistic Expectations;  Be aware of your sib’s developmental stages  which could mean they will not have a complete understanding of the situation until much later in life.
  8. \n
  9. Communication; Invite your child to “check in” from time to time and make sure their needs are being met.
  10. \n
  11. Validation: Validate their experience and their feelings. This doesn’t mean you agree with everything they say, but it does mean is that they are free to have their feelings, regardless of what they are.
  12. \n
  13. Give your children a REAL parent rather than a perfect one: When you are REAL instead of perfect, you are modeling for both your children, what it looks like to be a healthy person.
