Six months ago, we took foster placement of a little boy named Cole.  Yesterday we adopted him.   We adopted Cady and Emma earlier this year.  For the past four years, Ana and I have been foster parents.  It's been life-changing.  We have aged tremendously, and we have lived exceptionally.  We have hurt like never before.  And we have discovered a capability in ourselves and others of loving and being loved so completely and unconditionally that we never imagined possible. Most of all, we have served God faithfully, made countless mistakes, but each day we evaluated, forgave, and asked forgiveness, then got up the next day determined to do better. And today, we woke up, no longer raising someone else's children for them, but raising our own.  It's a lot to take in.  It's what we prayed for, and God answered those prayers. Ana and I sit down to talk about the experience, some of the highs and lows, and moving forward. I met Tanji Johnson in 2001 when she had just graduated from being an amateur athlete to the Professional Division of competitive fitness in the IFBB.  She became an icon in the fitness industry, competing for 15 years as one of the very best, and at times, the very best in the world.  As a photographer and journalist, I had the privilege of covering her career for fitness industry magazines and websites and witnessing some of the incredible highs and devastating lows she experienced along the way.  Despite two typically career-ending injuries, she recovered and came back stronger and better than ever.   The approach she takes with life is the same she took with her athletic career, and because of that, she is immensely successful at everything she chooses to do.   I hope you find Tanji and her approach to facing difficulty inspiring.  We all can most certainly use some inspiration right now. Aging looks very different in 2020 than it did when I was growing up.  The average 60-year-old man or woman looks and acts very differently than they did even a generation ago.  Fitness is the culprit.  That and eating healthier and living healthier lifestyles.  Until now, however, finding applicable information about aging and staying fit has been challenging.  Most of the available fitness information created is for a younger audience, and the information available doesn't address some of the biological changes those over 50 experience like changing hormones, changing digestion, and reduced recovery, for instance.   And the information available for those over 50 is not always applicable to non-sedentary types and indeed not committed athletes that function at a high level of fitness and capability. Kevin Myles, Author of The Diet That Works, is our guest today, and we talk about his new project that just launched, The Fifty Plus Fit Club.  Kevin is a well known trainer and qualitifed expert on nutriton and training and a 61 year old male elite athlete.  In other words, the perfect man for the job.   Visit the website and you can reach out to Kevin Myles Here. We are foster parents and our little boy Kwamane has been with us since he was 4 months old.  He is four now and has spend every day of his life since January 2017 with us.  Six weeks ago he went to live with his biological mother.  We knew it was coming and it's a day she has been dreaming about since they were separated and we are very happy and supportive of her.  But that doesn't make it easy, it just makes it right.   Ana and I finally break the silence and talk about Kwamane and the story behind him leaving in this episode.  You can also read the story here Support The Podcast  Visit GoodladUnscripted.com Watch GoodladUnscripted on Youtube Follow on Instagram Follow on Twitter Join the discussion on our Facebook Group Subscribe on iTunes Subscribe on Google Play Subscribe on Spotify Subscribe on Breaker Subscribe on Overcast Subscribe on Pocket Casts Subscribe on Radio Public --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goodlad-unscripted/support

Ana has been my favorite model to work with for over a decade now.  We have done hundreds of photoshoots together, but since we became foster parents four years ago, and adoptive parents this year, working together has been rare. Recently, Aunt Elaine Goodlad gave us a day off, so Ana traveled with me to LA to do a photoshoot. Ana and I talk about shooting together, modeling, and our shoot in LA.  I hope you enjoy and if you want to see the video of the photoshoot, click the link here.  And thank you for subscribing to my youtube channel. As a father and a taxpayer, I can't help but look at the state of our world and ask myself who the heck raised these fools.  My grandmother was the most significant influence in my life, and she was born in 1917 in the prairie province of Saskatchewan in Canada.  She and my grandfather were farmers. They survived the "hungry thirties" as she called them and washed clothes with a washboard, fetched water from the dugout to cook and clean with, chopped wood to heat the house and stove, and a doctor was a day's ride away in a horse-drawn wagon.  They came face to face with survival each day, and the community around them pulled together, so no one starved, and all had the bare necessities.  Manners were important, so civic pride and duty, hard work, integrity, and taking responsibility were the hallmarks of a good person.  Times have changed.  But why have they changed? Elaine Goodlad and I , or "Aunty Elaine" as she is called in our family, were raised by the same kind of people and come from the same neck of the woods.  We sit down to talk about what we think went wrong and how Ana, and I are raising our kids and why. Before 2020 I always thought of people who stored large caches of food and water, medical supplies, and other supplies and survival equipment as oddballs. After lining up to buy toilet paper and rationing squares when none could be found, I have changed my opinion. Being prepared by having some basic survival provisions and equipment stored away is just prudent. In the event of something catastrophic happening to a community, it's the socially responsible thing to do. Security and personal protection expert Micheal Healea joins me on this show to talk about scenarios that quite possibly could happen and how to prepare so you and your family can survive a catastrophic event or disaster. Our eighth wedding anniversary came and went with little fanfare on the 8th of this month.  Ana and I had dated four years before we married, we wanted to be sure.  So with a strong love and twelve years of wedded bliss under our belts, it should have been a day we even wanted to celebrate.  But we didn't.  Not in the traditional way, at least. This podcast is revealing.  We talk about how our marriage was brought to the brink this year, and why.  And we share the simple truth about how we turned things around.  And with all the love that fills our home, we talk about the most painful reason why our anniversary was a quiet one this year. Kimi Couture, the business executive, and entrepreneur, turned professional fighter,  got into women's Mixed Martial Arts back when no one thought it would be successful.  She was one of the pioneers, one of the original few professional female MMA fighters in the world, and while she didn't win every fight she had, she was tough as nails and one of the most entertaining and exciting professional MMA fighters, male or female, of that time. We sat down to talk about those days, growing up tough on a ranch in Colorado, her very public celebrity life, and very public divorce from MMA legend Randy Couture, and finally where she is today.   Visit GoodladUnscripted.comWatch GoodladUnscripted on YoutubeFollow on InstagramFollow on TwitterJoin the discussion on our Facebook Group Subscribe on iTunesSubscribe on Google PlaySubscribe on SpotifySubscribe on BreakerSubscribe on OvercastSubscribe on Pocket CastsSubscribe on Radio Public --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goodlad-unscripted/support

This year has taught us a great deal about ourselves, our family and life and we will never live it the way we once did.  It's infinitely better now.  In the absence of all we knew due to covid and quarantine, we discovered what really makes us happy and what is most important.  All of our dreams have changed, as have our goals, and our new life is much simpler than the one we were living before 2020. You can follow Rick on Facebook Rick DeLauter has dedicated the past 43 years of his life to serving his country, the United States Of America.  His grandfather served in World War 1.  His father and uncles served in World War II.  And his oldest son, like him, also served in the military.  After 22 years in the Army, Rick retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and has continued serving in other roles related to the military to this day.  He is a guy that does that high-speed classified work throughout the world that is necessary to keep our country and interests safe and free.  I think he is a hero and a man that all good men can learn from and pattern themselves behind. At sixty-five years of age, he is the father of five-year-old Benjamin, who has Down Syndrome.  His perspective on being a dad and Benjamin's dad challenge me to be better with my own children.  He is a Christian and a man that comes from a mixed-race and mixed-culture home and sees nothing but the positives of that experience.   I had intentions of this podcast being a 30-minute show.  I should have known better.  We cut it short at an hour, and it was one of the fastest moving hours of my life.  I could listen to Rick for days.  He has formed his opinions based on his own experiences gleaned from a lifetime spent dealing with realities around the globe that most of us could never even imagine.  He is a man I respect, and it was an honor to have him on the show.   You can follow Rick on Facebook Visit GoodladUnscripted.comWatch GoodladUnscripted on YoutubeFollow on InstagramFollow on TwitterJoin the discussion on our Facebook Group Subscribe on iTunesSubscribe on Google PlaySubscribe on SpotifySubscribe on BreakerSubscribe on OvercastSubscribe on Pocket CastsSubscribe on Radio Public --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goodlad-unscripted/support

Inspired by the recent passing of a man we knew and respected deeply, we talk about our perspectives on what is essential, what isn't, and how important it is to evaluate where we are, where we are going, and make sure we are on the path to where we want to be. This has been a long time coming but we filed papers recently and today we got a court date for the adoption of Crystal, our former foster son's biological mother.  When we told our family and friends they didn't understand why.  We talk about why in this episode and it's for the most simple of reasons.  We also talk about our business, how quarantine and Covid have impacted it, and what we are doing about it.  Doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do is important and we do our best to live our life in a way that reflects those values.  We aren't perfect by a long shot, but we have a perfect record of doing our best, learning from our mistakes, and making something good from what we have left to work with.   As always, I hope this podcast helps someone, inspires someone, and shows someone what is possible.   Brought to you by Blackbean.coffee Visit GoodladUnscripted.com Watch GoodladUnscripted on Youtube Follow on Instagram Follow on Twitter Join the discussion on our Facebook Group Subscribe on iTunes Subscribe on Google Play Subscribe on Spotify Subscribe on Breaker Subscribe on Overcast Subscribe on Pocket Casts Subscribe on Radio Public --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goodlad-unscripted/support

Quarantine is over, and life is getting busier again. We didn't adjust very well initially, but a few weeks into this, we figured out that we had to figure it out and find a better way.  We solved some issues by becoming more efficient, but the most significant improvements came when we changed how we thought about and approached our days, and the things and people in it.   Today, we are busier than ever before, but happier, more productive, and our family is stronger, happier, and healthier.  This episode, we talk about how we did it.

She was born into the gang life and lived it to its fullest for thirty years before being inspired to make a change.  She did the bold thing, the thing she never imagined she could ever do.  She earned her GED, and then later, her certification as a Phlebotomist and a Medical Assistant graduating with honors.  But after graduation, the job prospects didn't come through, and then a global pandemic and quarantine hit, so any job was out of the question.   How many people would give up?  How about an African-American woman that grew up in the gang life and knew nothing else until three years ago?  Would she walk away from her dreams and return to her old life of crime and violence? Crystal made a choice.  She is working on her bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice.  She joins me on this podcast to talk about all of it.  The thoughts and feelings and her darkest moments and why she won't be going back to the life she left.  She is a remarkable woman that inspires me daily because she takes full responsibility for her life and choices.  Because of that, she has the power to change whatever she wishes about herself.

Marriage is a thing like getting a puppy or buying a boat.  If you want it to make you happy and give you years of joy, it requires constant care and maintenance.  We call it "work" when we talk about maintaining a marriage, but maybe a better approach, for something we wanted so badly at one point, would be to think of it as caring for, building, or even enjoying our marriage.  A bad marriage can destroy lives.  A well-maintained one can be a beacon of light to the world, and the generations that come after you, not to mention, be the most gratifying endeavor one could embark upon in life. Ana and I spend a great deal of time caring for our marriage because number one, we promised we would when we took our vows and because so much happiness, security, love, and goodness pours into our lives when we do.  Love, because it is a gift, is best measured by the one receiving it than the one giving.  So I regularly ask Ana if I am hitting the mark or, despite my good intentions, falling short.  Only she knows if I am making her happy, and the only way for me to measure my efforts is by asking her. We start this episode talking about coffee and some other odds and ends, and then I put her on the spot.   I asked her to talk about five that I do that make her happy, or that would make her more pleased if I changed how I do them.

Five years ago, Greg Hasberry, an otherwise healthy and vibrant young man, was slowly reaching the end of his life.  His kidneys had failed, he had been on dialysis for some time, and his body was giving indications that it just wouldn't be able to keep functioning much longer.  He is a single parent, and the only thing that kept him going on the toughest days was his daughter and wanting to be there for her.     Then one day, he got a call.  It was a man that wanted to meet with him.  In the middle of a local coffee shop, that man told Greg he wanted to be his kidney donor.   The memories are still vivid for Greg.  In this podcast, he shares some of those thoughts, fears, and feelings during his slow walk toward impending death and then the kindness of a Christian man he barely knew that gave him his life back.

For more than two months now our kids have been glued to our sides every minute of the day and frankly, they get sick of us from time to time and become hard to handle.  There are few places we can take them and few things they can do so our parenting skills have been tested to the limit.  And almost every parent on the planet is going through some version of this. The walls are closing in; money is tight, you can't get a second to yourself, jobs and businesses are unsure or already lost, the news is all doom and gloom, and the world is angry and fed up.  About then, your wife, or husband, or kids look at you the wrong way, and you feel like you are going to lose it.  Domestic violence is on the rise, and so are bankruptcies, and soon the divorce rate and suicide rate statistics will be made public (when there is no political advantage to keeping them quiet), and they will be alarming.  Getting along with the people in your house is the greatest challenge many of us face each day. We are quarantined with four adults, four toddlers, two dogs, and Ana and me.  Our business is suffering catastrophically.  Our savings are gone.  I am working as a security guard to keep food on the table for all of us.  There isn't much left when the dust settles each payday.  We have more than enough reason to be on edge, and we have been many times in the past three months.   But we have taken a step back and realized that what we do have is each other.  And that this quarantine circus will come to an end, and we have plans to recover when it does.  We also have our faith in God that we will all be healthy and fed and together.  But we have to do the work. We have to solve the problem. Ana and I talk about how we are doing that and the success we are having.  Our home is full of love and happiness, and while quarantine is extremely difficult, I can proudly say that our children love it, and we are a much happier and closer family than ever before. Time.  We have plenty of it right now, and many people are spending theirs feeling afraid, frustrated, angry, and worried.  Justifiably so, but it doesn't feel very good, and we do have the option to think about whatever we want.  Dreaming, for instance, or planning for what you would do if you could do anything in the world.  Daydreaming, in other words, and it's a very healthy and positive escape from the day to day challenge of quarantine.  You might discover a forgotten passion, or you might realize that your dream is not so impossible after all and you start making plans for the life you always wanted.  .   You have the time. This extended quarantine is really getting to some people, while others are doing better because of it.  I saw a post from someone basically chewing everyone out that was posting positive and helpful messages about how they are dealing with it.  It was an emotional response to the stress of quarantine and illogical, but is there a better way to deal with it?    Visit GoodladUnscripted.comWatch GoodladUnscripted on YoutubeFollow on InstagramFollow on TwitterJoin the discussion on our Facebook Group Subscribe on iTunesSubscribe on Google PlaySubscribe on SpotifySubscribe on BreakerSubscribe on OvercastSubscribe on Pocket CastsSubscribe on Radio Public --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goodlad-unscripted/support

When Ana and I met I was a photographer and she was a professional athlete and model.  We travelled the country together and every chance we got she modeled for me.  We did what we wanted when we wanted and were glued at the hip and happy about it.  We started raising kids three and a half years ago and that was the end of our marriage being a priority.  Kids came first, then work to pay for kids and Ana and I lived in the same house and loved each other, but rarely got time together to do the things that were important to us.  One of the many positives of being quarantined is that we have more time than we had before and we decided to spend it on each other.  Since then our marriage has taken a very strong upswing and realizing how important that time is to a happy and successful family, we made a promise to always invest time in each other and doing things together that we love to do. We can't control the pandemic or how people respond to it but there is so much we can control and Ana and I are making the best possible use of this time to come out ahead once the dust settles.  We didn't plan this, but we talk about our top three things we love and don't love about this entire odyssey. If you told me six months ago that I could have two months off to do whatever I wanted I wouldn't choose to sit in front of the TV watching the news, or watching the news any other way.  I'd aggressively invest that time in making my circumstances better.  So I made a decision to do a bunch of things for my family, and when this ordeal is over, I will be very thankful for the time I was blessed with to re-set and build a much better future. If you live on social media and the news it's either the end of this Corona Virus or the end of Mankind, depending on who you listen to.  In the end we can only speculate on both outcomes at this point and so it's a waste of good time and energy.  What we can do is use this unprecedented time to make our lives better, chase some dreams we put on the back burner, or learn something we always wanted to learn so that when this comes to an end, one way or the other, it was time well spent.Ana and I talk about what we and some others are doing to take full advantage of the time.Brought to you by Silver Bullet Anti-Aging This podcast is brought to you by BlessedBodywear.com You can subscribe to the Goodlad Unscripted Podcast on iTunes or Spotify or Google Play My Website - Facebook - Instagram - Twitter - YouTube and thank you for Subscribing to my channel --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goodlad-unscripted/support

Social distancing - not working, not going to the gym, not going shopping, not living a normal life, no income and no idea when it will all end or any control over your security a miserable set of circumstances to be in. We may not be able to get it all back but maybe we can re-claim some of it, maybe even the most important parts.  Ana and I talk about that decision to take back what we can and turn the challenges into positives and since we did, home is a much happier and positive place to be.  We hope this show helps others that were struggling as we were. We are deep into this social distancing thing and at times the walls feel like they are closing in.  Small problems become big and annoying problems so patience is low, stress is high, and there is no place to go to get away from the issues.  It can get ugly at home really fast and rest assured there will be countless tragedies before this mess is over.  Or we can use this opportunity with so much stress to find new and better ways of making ourselves, our relationships and families stronger.  Ana and I talk about our experiences and what we have learned that will make us better because of and not despite Covid-19.Brought to you by Silver Bullet Anti-Aging This podcast is brought to you by BlessedBodywear.com You can subscribe to the Goodlad Unscripted Podcast on iTunes or Spotify or Google Play My Website - Facebook - Instagram - Twitter - YouTube and thank you for Subscribing to my channel --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goodlad-unscripted/support

This whole social distancing thing was a lot of fun for the first couple of restful days but the novelty has worn off and everything, and everyone is getting irritated.  The reality is this thing is not going away anytime soon so the only thing we can control is how we work our way through it.  Ana and I discuss the things we have discovered work for us and our family.  We hope what we have learned helps you.  Brought to you by Silver Bullet Anti-Aging This podcast is brought to you by BlessedBodywear.com You can subscribe to the Goodlad Unscripted Podcast on iTunes or Spotify or Google Play My Website - Facebook - Instagram - Twitter - YouTube and thank you for Subscribing to my channel --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goodlad-unscripted/support

We canvassed the members of the Unscripted Group on Facebook about what they would like us to do a podcast about.  The first comment was "Why religion/belief in God matters. Would be interested in your thoughts."  While neither Ana or I feel qualified to explain Why God Matters to the world in the larger sense, we certainly can discuss it on a personal level and so we did our best to squeeze all of that into a single show.

It's inevitable.  We have all judged someone at some point in our lives and we have all been judged by someone.  It's never fair, or right, and most times if we knew more of the story we may not be so quick to judge.  Ana and I share our perspectives on judging other and being judged. Elaine Goodlad joins me to talk about finding peace and happiness and how we, like so many others, spent years chasing things we thought would make us happy and later in life came to realize the real secret to happiness and finding peace.  Not surprisingly, it's also part of the secret to staying young. Crystal Ellis is the biological mother of our foster son Jesse (Kwamane).  She was born into the gang life and actively lived it until a couple years ago when she made the decision to choose a different path for herself and her son.  She has since turned her life around, left the gang life and all the people that did not propel her forward.  She earned her GED, and last month she graduated with honors earning her certification as a Phlebotomist and registered Medical Assistant.  We sit down and talk about where and what she came from, the turning point in her life, and the new world she lives in now and the challenges she faces each day that come from within.  This is a raw and poignant interview with a woman that has done what so few have and tells the story about what it took to do what she has done.   This podcast is brought to you by BlessedBodywear.com You can subscribe to the Goodlad Unscripted Podcast on iTunes or Spotify or Google Play My Website - Facebook - Instagram - Twitter - YouTube and thank you for Subscribing to my channel --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goodlad-unscripted/support

You cannot have a meaningful relationship with anyone without, at some point, having differences. If not resolved, those differences can tear loving and meaningful relationships apart. When our perspectives differ the natural reaction is to explain or defend our perspective and when both parties are intent on being understood, no one is understood and tensions rise. In this episode, Ana and I talk about perspectives and how our inevitable differing perspectives have negatively impacted our marriage and how we have learned to solve that problem. I wasn't ready to make any kind of announcement but Ana went ahead and did it anyway with no warning.  Of course that means I will have to return the favor someday, when she least expects it!  Today's show is about perspective but most of it, it seems, was me getting speed-bagged by a very feisty and funny I have to admit, Ana. This was the most fun we have had doing a podcast, I hope you enjoy it and it brightens your day.
