Anna Baird was a podiatrist for six years. And as a woman who loves fashion, she grew tired of recommending to her client's shoes that she wouldn't be caught dead in.  Anna knew that if she could combine comfort with fashion she would be onto something good. The only problem was, designing a  shoe that's both fashionable and comfortable is actually really tricky, which is why most companies won't do it. So Anna reduced her workdays and spent three years developing her first range of shoes. And she won't sugarcoat it, those first years in business were reallyhard.  Today Bared are leaders in footwear. Anyone who has ever tried Anna's shoes will tell you they're the comfiest shoes they have ever owned. And, importantly they're fashion-forward. So how did Anna survive those first years in business when her company just wasn't profitable? And what has she learnt in her thirteen years of business?  LINKS You can keep up with all things Bared Footwear on Instagram or online at bared.com.au You can find out more about Mia's Clear Space Challenge online at ladystartup.com.au Tell us what you think about Lady Startup Stories via our survey and you could go in the running to win a $100 Gift Voucher! Alex Tanya Weller, like many other people, had tried to buy a rug online and failed. In fact, in 2014 people all over the world were scrolling the internet in search of the perfect rug. But no one was buying them.  So Alex and her husband set out to create Miss Amara, an e-commerce rug business that takes the hassle out of buying a rug online.  Seven years on and Miss Amara's customer service is at the top of its game. Customers can jump online and see what a rug will look like in their space, can seek assistance from professionals and even try it at home and return it if they aren't happy.  So how did Alex transform an online grudge purchase into a cult fave? Hannah and Verity had been running LVLY, a same-day flower and gift delivery service for six years. The second three years had seen strong growth, before a bushfire natural disaster – and a few other issues – threatened to turn their business into ashes. Who knew that another disaster – this time a global pandemic – would trigger a massive turnaround? Suddenly LVLY became the perfect way to connect with family and friends in lockdown. You could send flowers, a care package, some chocolate, even alcohol to a friend having a bad day, a birthday or something worth celebrating. On the very same day. 2020 turned out to be LVLY's biggest year to date, with some weeks recording 800% growth on the year before. Hannah and Verity had to suddenly learn to scale up their business and fast.  So what was it like being so close to shutting up shop? The Activation Plan has been tried and tested by over 4,000 Lady Startups and counting. Yep. Tested by literally thousands of women just like you. Women with a business idea, or a side-hustle. Women who, at the end of the Activation Plan, had the clarity, direction, and confidence, as well as the tools and support they needed to launch their business right. So what does this mean for you? Would you finally be able to dedicate yourself to that passion project you’ve been working on when time (and life) allows? What about the financial freedom? Would it mean bringing in a second income? Relieving some of the stress from you and your family? Would it mean working from home and not missing those family moments? Maybe it would mean being your own boss? Stepping out of your comfort zone, and getting that sense of purpose you just haven’t found in any other job? Honestly, I relate. To every single one of those reasons. This is why I went out on my own, and I’ve never looked back. LINKS Enrolments to the Activation Plan are now open for a limited time. Jessica Ducrou, you might not know her name but you've definitely heard of her work. She's the person behind Splendour In The Grass, Falls Music And Arts Festival and Homebake, to name a few.  Jess is a trailblazer and arguably one of the most powerful people in the Australian music industry. It takes a lot of moxie, some cold calling and a whole lot of networking to create events like these.  So how does someone organise an event with over 50,000 people in attendance? Sarah Andrews had spent her life searching for purpose. Until one day scrolling the internet, she found her answer: a run-down cottage in Tasmania. It was secluded, overlooked the sea and needed some love... That cottage, Captains Rest, is now one of the most sought-after luxury Airbnbs in the country. It's booked out months in advance, despite being five hours from Hobart.  But if you think getting to this point was easy, it wasn't. Sarah almost died in a shipwreck, went through a messy divorce and even fought cancer. It was out of necessity she realised she needed to reinvent herself.  So how did Sarah put her Airbnb on the map? What's it like to almost die at sea? And what inspired her to help other women create their luxury own Airbnbs? Sarah Andrews joins Georgia Love... Michael Bublé, Delta Goodrem, Guy Sebastian, Jules Sebastian, Fleetwood Mac, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Human Nature. What do all these famous musicians have in common? They are just a small fraction of the talent managed by today’s guest, Jennifer Fontaine. Jennifer started her career at Sony Music Entertainment Australia, before moving on to Warner Music Group. But then, like so many women, she decided she wanted to do exactly what she wanted to do. She wanted to work for herself. So in 2007, she founded Private Idaho Management, and began to look after the careers of Human Nature, and Guy & Jules Sebastian. But with offices in both Sydney and LA, Jen was travelling a lot. All while taking care of her son and trying to grow her business.  So how did she do it?  And how on earth does she find time to lift weights 6 times a week?  THE END BITS: You can find Private Idaho Management here - https://www.privateidaho.com.au/. There are some products that you need but just aren’t fun to buy. Coat hangers, staples, ironing boards, flour... Here’s an idea for a business: find a product nobody likes buying and then make a version of it that people will describe as a “cult buy”. That’s what Ava Matthews and her business partner Bec Jefferd did when they noticed that skincare was having a moment but sunscreens were a product that just weren't very…. sexy. They changed that, almost overnight, with Ultra Violette. Their range of sunscreens come in distinctive bright blue packaging that you've probably seen all over Instagram. So, how did they do it? What was their approach to revolutionising a whole category?  Mia Freedman chatted to Ava to find out.  THE END BITS: Check out Ultra Violette here - https://ultraviolette.com.au/.  You can follow Ava Matthews on Instagram here - https://www.instagram.com/avamatthews/?hl=en.  Are you busting to start your own business but you don’t know where to start? Today’s Lady Startup story is a common one. A story of becoming bored with your day job, dreaming of doing something different… and then making it happen. Alyce Tran is the co-founder of The Daily Edited. They make really cute personalised leather and lifestyle accessories that you’ve probably seen on Instagram.  They’re a hugely successful brand these days, worth over 30 million dollars, with celebrity purchasers like Kylie Jenner and Hailey Baldwin. You might recognise their products - but what you probably don’t know is that TDE started in Alyce’s house, at her kitchen table. And for a year, her life was kind of crazy. So how did she make the jump from dream to side hustle to multi-million dollar business? Laura Thompson started The Koorie Circle almost five years ago while she was working as a health professional full time, with the aim of making statement earrings that tell a story and celebrate the culture, history and identity of Aboriginal Australia.  But with one business chugging along successfully, Laura realised she wanted to do more. They produce merch with meaning, like t-shirts, jumpers and beanies, and earlier this year, they spearheaded a national campaign to free the flag. This is Part 2 of Mia Freedman’s chat with Jodie Fox about her business Shoes of Prey. You can find Part 1 in the Lady Startup Stories feed.  Jodie Fox described August 28, 2018 as “one of the most horrific days of my life”. It was the day her multi-million dollar business, Shoes of Prey, officially collapsed. Jodie’s co-founders - her ex husband and his best mate - were no longer part of the day to day running of the business and on the day the call was made to pull the pin, Jodie was at the company’s factory in China. In this conversation, Jodie tells Mia exactly how that day unfolded, and the unexpected changes that have happened in Jodie’s life since.  Check out Jodie’s book here - https://booktopia.kh4ffx.net/oENDW.  Find  out more about the Lady Startup Idea Kickstarter course here - https://www.ladystartup.com/pages/idea-kickstarter Are you busting to start your own business but you don’t know where to start? Jodie Fox founded Shoes of Prey in 2008 with her husband and his friend. The business allowed women to design their own shoes online and have them shipped anywhere in the world. They broke even at two months, hit multi-million dollar revenues in under two years, and raised tens of millions of dollars in funding from top-tier investors.  But in 2018, the business failed. In part one of this conversation, Jodie tells Mia Freedman about how she built a ‘Purple Cow’ into her business, the smart way she pitched to investors and what she did when it all started to go downhill.
