How well do you know your client’s struggles and pain points? This episode of the Fearless Practitioners podcast welcomes guest Travis Zigler, optometrist and co-founder of Eye Love, who shares his journey of building a successful online company by really listening to the needs of his audience. The power of listening to your audience and really taking all their feedback and their pain points to heart can transform your brick and mortar practice into a larger mission. That is what Travis Zigler did, and in this week's show we hear how he and his wife and co-founder Jenna Zigler, did just that. As an optometrist and an entrepreneur, he highly valued the skill of really listening to the pain points of his community. What he continued to see inside his clinics inspired him to take that main pain point to a larger platform to help and serve more people. Travis also shares some great tips on how you can take what your clients are saying and serve them on a whole new level, to grow your business. ABOUT TRAVIS AND EYE LOVE Travis and Jenna Zigler started Eye Love in May of 2015 with the ultimate goal being to build permanent clinics in areas that have no access to quality eye care. As active members of Great Shape, Inc, and more specifically the iCARE project, they travel to Jamaica every year to give eye examinations and dispense eyeglasses. As a company, they want you to feel good about your purchase and who you do business with. Their passion is to provide a better quality of life through better vision -- locally and globally. Locally they do this by helping you see the clearest that you can. Globally by giving a portion of profits back to someone in need of an eye examination and glasses in Jamaica. Eye Love! In this episode of the Fearless Practitioner podcast, I share the three BIG decisions in life, and work, that I wish I had made sooner - and why YOU should make them now. I thought I had to make LOTS of money before making these decisions, which turns out, is just not the case. Y’all know I am on a mission to help you build your private practice. I want to help you build a private practice that will sustain you and have a lot of impact on those you serve. I don’t want you to make the mistakes I made while you are building yours. Over the past 13 years, I have been very successful, have learned a ton, and helped so many people. As I have been reflecting over the course of this practice, I know there are some things that I wish I would have done sooner that could have greatly impacted the practice in a positive way faster. By the end of the show I want you to take action on at least one of these topics, so that you are in a better position. Is your Dream Practice going to build itself? It’s time to trust your gut and stop waiting. It kills me to know that too many people are just waiting to see what happens, rather than take action and do something about building their Dream Practice. If you need a kick in the pants to inspire you, today’s episode with my amazing guest, Laura Poburan, will light your fire. Trusting your gut can bring up fear and is honestly hard to actually do. In this week’s show, I chat with Laura Poburan about how she took a HUGE leap out of her dream, and landed upright and feeling like she finally found her footing in her business. She is here at the most perfect time to share her story of change and transition and how we can all face fear and come out the other side. Laura also shares a pretty amazing tip on how to reach and serve your clients right now! Also, today is a BIG DAY!! We are launching the Building Your Dream Practice course, and it perfectly alignments with what Laura talks about. If you are feeling the pull of this economic downturn to pivot and change - trust your gut and let’s do this together! ABOUT LAURA POBURAN What if Pocahontas and Tony Robbins had a baby? Hi! I'm Laura. Seeker of wild adventure and leader of deep, meaningful change that helps people to up-level the standards they hold themselves to in their life. So I developed a simple way to tap into your own secret superpower to create predictable, meaningful change in others. My deepest passion in this world is to show every health, wellness or nutrition coach that they already have everything they need to lead their clients beyond the scale into lives of freedom, fulfillment and happiness. Have you ever met anyone in a bar that turns out to be such an inspirational and badass of colleagues? Well, I did! A few years ago I sat next to Kristi Coughlin and ever since then she has been an inspiration to me. After listening to this episode of the Fearless Practitioners Podcast, I know she will be one for y’all too. When life changes, we have to learn to make space for that, and also learn to not allow perfectionism to hold us back when we are growing our private practice. Kristi shares her tips and tools on how she has transformed into a phoenix rising from life’s experiences, and how having a badass brag list of what she’s done has helped her to keep reaching for her goals. ABOUT KRISTI COUGHLIN Like many, Kristi started her professional career the traditional way, as a clinical dietitian. After working several years as a relief dietitian in an acute care hospital, she accepted a teaching position with a local community college. Eventually, Kristi transitioned into school nutrition before taking a massive leap of faith to move across state lines with her family to the beautiful State of Oregon. Kristi’s move prompted her to pursue a dream she had since her days in college - to start her own business. In 2016, Kristi took the necessary steps to launch an online private practice. For three years, Kristi ran her private practice helping people overcome their perfect eating expectations, but felt compelled to take on other ventures to help people on a larger scale. In early 2019, Kristi launched an online store called Effect Positivity (verb): to bring about happy. The goal of the store was to create and sell products with inspiring messages. The messages inscribed on her products are a direct result of working with clients in her private practice – many of whom are recovering perfectionists who would benefit from loving themselves a little more. The popular messages sold on Kristi’s website include: You are Enough, Keep Going, and REAL. Better than Perfect. [click_to_tweet tweet="Want to know how to get out of the perfectionist trap? So many of y’all get stuck with the online part of your practice. And I get it, that part can feel like a zoo with so many distractions, twists and turns.  On this week’s episode of the Fearless Practitioners podcast, I sit down with my guest Whitney Bateson, dietitian-turned-digital marketer who works with health and wellness professionals to grow their business.  Join us to hear Whitney’s journey of being a dietitian first, but realizing her passion was in design and digital technology. Are you ready to feel the fear and do it anyway? This episode discusses ways you can build your courage to grow your dream private practice. Over the holidays and into the beginning of this year, I read Jessica Honegger’s book, Imperfect Courage. Many of her points resonated with me and I want to spend today's episode talking about ways we can build courage over fear in our practices. That’s why this podcast is called FEARLESS Practitioners, and it’s all about empowering you to take the fear out of the unknown with building a practice, and truly following your dreams. This episode gives you solutions on how to make peace with fear, and to have a practical plan when starting your private practice. Can I get a high-five to all my morning people?! I can just feel the non-morning people rolling their eyes, and yet there is a group of y’all who I might have missed - those who want a routine and just have not found one that works yet. Are you ready to shake hands with 2020? This new year episode of the Fearless Practitioners Podcast provides three strategies to shift your mindset and build your private practice this year. Does anyone else feel like 2019 was just plain bananas? Throughout all the craziness, many themes continued to arise in my personal and professional life. The most frequent flyer was the concept of confidence and mindset. Ya’ll, our minds are powerful entities, and literally embody our thoughts. Meaning, our bodies react and behave according to how we talk to ourselves and how we think on a regular basis. If we are constantly berating and condemning certain aspects of ourselves, our minds will not believe we are capable, and certainly not confident. True confidence isn’t hard to acquire with a little practice. It just requires some re-training of the brain. That’s why I’m providing three different strategies to help you shift your mindset, deepen your confidence and, ultimately, achieve your lofty, inspiring goals. Bonus points if your goals include building a private practice! The coming year can be a repeat of history, or it can be a year of growth and opportunity. It’s up to you and your mindset which one you choose. I hope you choose the latter, and here is your starting point. This episode invites you to take a different approach to the 'F' word, and why failure is not only inevitable, it's actually  teaching tool that is necessary to grow. So tell me more about how you failed this week. Has anyone ever asked you that question before? Maybe, but probably not. Most of us tend to focus on our successes because that feels a lot better. But we shouldn’t discount our failures! I didn’t begin to understand this concept until later in life… long after the eye rolls and liquefied embarrassment of my father rambling about failure to my friends in the car faded. I didn’t yet realize why my dad was so zealous about failure! But, as I heard and learned from other extremely successful entrepreneurs about why they embrace failure, I realized that failure helps me learn from my mistakes, improve my ways of thinking and executing, and ultimately helps me grow in so many aspects. Now, my dad conversates with me and my friends on a regular basis, and we don’t roll our eyes! We listen intently, and soak in the wisdom from an entrepreneurial man who failed many times, but succeeded even more. You just don’t want to miss this short, but oh so sweet, episode, I promise! How do you define success? For my guest, Monica Mo, it required letting go of her ego, focusing on community, and leading from within. The moment when you realize that letting go of your ego and focusing on solving your communities' problems is the true key to success, you will never look back. So often, we fixate on ourselves. We worry, "Am I saying the right thing? Do I look the part? Should I get more credentials? Is my content up to par with others in my arena?" All of these are valid, understandable questions, but the answers to these questions will not necessarily help solve your communities’ problems. Our Podcast guest, Monica Mo, shares how she achieved success and fulfillment when she embraced the raw, vulnerable, humanness of people, and let go of trying to seem qualified enough, saying exactly the right thing, and shed her ego. I cannot lie, I have a major girl crush on Monica, and this episode highlights exactly why. I’m amazed by her life experiences and how she effectively uses them to enhance her business and life. I value how she leads with her heart and inner wisdom to aid and build her community. And, I respect her generosity and advice. Be sure to listen until the end...because Monica asks a bombshell question that gave ME goosebumps. Monica and I would love to hear your answers! ABOUT MONICA MO Monica Mo is the founder and CEO of WellSeek, an online community platform on a mission to dispel myths and spread truth in the health and wellness world. Through her work as Curating Editor of the WellSeek Collective and founder of SeekHer Foundation, a non-profit project celebrating a woman's rise and resilience in her mental health journey, she envisions a world where everyone can uncover their own path of health and happiness. Monica sits on the Advisory Board of 2020 Mom, a national non-profit organization working to close gaps in maternal health care through education and advocacy. She's also a Council of Directors Member at True Health Initiative, a global coalition of world-renowned health experts alongside David L. Katz, Sanjay Gupta, and Deepak Chopra. Monica was recognized by San Diego Magazine as a 2019 Rising Star finalist & Woman of the Year nominee for her work in wellness media and mental health advocacy. She has been invited to speak at leading universities and research institutes, including the NIH and UCSD, and has been featured as a media guest and contributor on NBC, CBS, ABC, Thrive Global, and ESPN Radio. She began her career in biotechnology, specializing in genome-based metabolic engineering and data analytics, and was a member of the academic team that pioneered the "Google map of human metabolism" that was featured in TIME, CNET and CNN. As a scientist at Intrexon (NYSE: XON), she led early-stage R&D initiatives focused on metabolic systems engineering, cancer therapeutic design, and biologics production. Have you harnessed the power of word of mouth marketing to grow and leverage your private practice?  This episode of the Fearless Practitioners podcast discusses this tried and true method and my own experiences with it.   Word of mouth marketing… an ancient rabbit hole OR the secret sauce to create a sustainable, successful private practice? What do you think? Well, I let you know exactly what I think about word of mouth marketing and how you can utilize it to leverage your private practice. I discuss the what, why, how, and when of this marketing technique and, as always, provide you actionable steps to begin implementing this today. Word of mouth marketing might not appear as sexy as digital, social, and email marketing because it’s becoming less and less common and seemingly requires extra effort. But, in reality, this marketing technique is a reliable, validated, and timeless strategy for businesses, especially dietetic private practices. In this episode, not only do I showcase my own unique experiences with word of mouth marketing, I also highlight the main drivers of this marketing technique, discuss why asking for reviews or testimonials is paramount, and the power of referrals. If you feel stuck with digital marketing or just desire more clients, as we all do, you won’t want to miss this insightful episode. Are you trying to make a shift in your practice, but dealing with fear of change? Don't miss this episode of the Fearless Practitioners podcast with my guest Stephanie Clairmont as she shares her journey of transition. Does the idea of changing paths in your career scare you? Many of us enter the job field in one area but transition into another area, even if it is simply a different concentration within the same field. Well, our guest, Stephanie, did just this, and boy did she benefit! While working as a GI specialist, Stephanie began a leverage practice group, which led to her offering cooking classes to her surrounding community. Ultimately, these cooking classes sparked her transition from GI health into coaching and mentoring other health entrepreneurs. Stephanie shares not only how she spontaneously, yet, intentionally achieved this, and also provides some of her best organizational, marketing, and launching skills and tricks. She reminds us that change and magic happen when we are vulnerable, and Stephanie encourages us to continually learn and expand, but to always make sure you also take action. In what ways will you take action after listening to this episode? I’d love to hear your answer! ABOUT STEPHANIE CLAIRMONT, MHSc, RD Stephanie Clairmont, MHSc, RD, is a Registered Dietitian, entrepreneur, founder and lead facilitator at The Leveraged Practice. She has been delivering in-person and online education since 2012 to health professionals and health clients and has been a part of national conferences, television shows and online symposiums. Today's episode welcomes a fearless, unconventional, career counselor, Jorie Himmel, PsyD. Jorie transformed her deep curiosity into the career of her dreams, and, get this, still maintains a desirable work-life balance! Early on in her journey, Jorie realized the key to career success, and dare I say personal happiness is something quite simple. Ask lots and lots of QUESTIONS. Who knew? No pun intended. ;) But seriously, Jorie provides an easily understandable series of questions to help you determine if your career goals align with your values, interests, and goals. Not only does Jorie provide helpful, pertinent career advice, she also discusses meeting our humanistic needs in other areas of our life beyond work, something I am fiercely passionate about. She truly inspired me as she talked about how change can be hard and uncomfortable, but RAD at the same time. At the end, she reveals the best and “worst” advice she’s received, and then provides us with some of her best advice. This episode absolutely fueled my fire and encouraged me to consider my own goals and visions, and I know you will feel equally inspired after listening to this insightful conversation. ABOUT JORIE HIMMEL, PsyD. I provide individual therapy and career counseling for adults. I believe in the importance of a good therapeutic relationship and use warmth and authenticity to create a collaborative therapeutic environment. It is in this context that clients are able to more deeply engage in self-exploration and growth. I use a relational and psychodynamic approach to therapy, while integrating cognitive-behavioral (CBT), dialectical-behavioral (DBT), and mindfulness-based interventions. I work with my clients to examine the connection between internal and external experiences, as well as to explore your relationships. In this way I can help you to gain insight and to build adaptive coping skills in order to feel healthier and more fulfilled.
