Scott Drummond, President, and Founder of Party Center Software has a winning mindset, a successful track record, a passion for entrepreneurship, and a desire to pay it forward.    His entrepreneurial career effectively started with the launch of a web design firm in 1998 (pre-Google) when he was just 1 year out of high school! In 2005, Drummond and his wife purchased a small indoor children’s play center called Bounceopolis, Inc. in El Dorado Hills and later they expanded and moved it to a new location in Folsom. Through operating Bounceopolis he realized that there was no viable online event booking and management tool for the Family Entertainment Center (FEC) industry. This led to the creation of Party Center Software, an online point-of-sale and event management software for the FEC industry. Drummond sold Party Center Software in 2019 to a PE firm Aquiline Capital Partners LLC and continues to run the company as the President and Founder.  Mark and Scott cover a lot of ground in this engaging conversation as they explore how early life lessons can shape the willingness to take risks, the courage to commit to winning (and learn from losing), and the heart to mentor the next entrepreneur in line.

Join me for this insightful discussion with two local CEOs, Chris Peacock of Aquaoso who just completed a $2M seed round, and Trifecta’s Greg Connolly who is in the process of raising a Series B, to learn how they have thought through and executed on their funding road-map.  If you would like to learn more about Chris or Greg check out the links below:  https://aquaoso.com/  https://www.facebook.com/AQUAOSO/  https://twitter.com/aquaosotech  https://www.linkedin.com/company/aquaoso/  https://www.linkedin.com/in/peacockcj/  https://www.trifectanutrition.com/  https://www.instagram.com/trifecta/  https://twitter.com/trifectasystem  https://www.facebook.com/trifectameals  https://www.pinterest.com/trifectasystem/  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCj804MjaGHT-MT8Pqi9Ui-w https://www.linkedin.com/company/trifecta-nutrition/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/gregconnolly/   If this episode inspires you to be part of the movement, and you believe, like me, that entrepreneurs are the answer to our future, message me so we can join forces to support building truly great companies in our region.  Subscribe to my channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCom_...  Mark Haney is a serial entrepreneur that has experience growing companies worth hundreds of millions of dollars.  Originally a term used to describe investors in Broadway shows, "Angel" now refers to high-net-worth individuals who invest their own money in exchange for equity in an entrepreneurial company (unlike venture capitalists, who invest other people's money). About $24B is deployed via Angel Investors in the U.S. each year. While these investments are high risk, they can be high reward. Several reputable studies show an average return of 2.6x investment in 3.5 years. In addition to capital, many Angels, who are often experienced business leaders, also invest their time and expertise to support the founder. This model of "smart money" ie: cash + support has proven to be both effective and critical to helping very early stage businesses get off the ground. Today, I have the honor of talking with 3 local and very experienced Angels about their journeys as investors in the Sacramento region. John Peters, Michelle Hallsten, and Ken Tallo, all of whom are part of a local investment group called the Sacramento Angels, discuss the value of angel investing, why and how they got started, and some key lessons learned along the way.  If you would like to learn more about John, Ken and Michelle visit the links below to be inspired! From fund managers and accredited investors to startup founders and their boards, diversity has been severely lacking in the venture capital community since inception. As a result, the US has lost billions of dollars of untapped economic opportunity and sidelined immense amounts of valuable human capital. In this episode, Mariah Lichtenstern, Emerging Manager and Founding Partner of DiverseCity Ventures, joins us to talk about the work she has done over the course of her career and, more recently as an Aspen Tech Policy fellow, to address these challenges around equitable access to capital.  This episode is packed full of information and resources and infused with Mariah’s positive, empowering and solution-oriented approach to creating a better future. Starting a business in Sacramento has become easier with entrepreneurs having access to multiple programs and resources. Building and scaling that business is still hard. In addition to raising capital, which is a challenge, founders also need support in finding customers and building operational capacity.  In this episode, I am joined by Steve Boyle, Founder, and CEO of Essential Aero, and Rick Spencer, VP of HaneyBiz and co-developer of The Sacramento Growth Factory (SGF). We explore how Essential Aero has benefited from SGF, and how the experience is different from other business-building efforts Steve has had in Sacramento. We also dive into why Sacramento is so well-positioned to be a great testbed for companies like Essential Aero, especially in establishing a Center of Excellence for aviation safety, operations, and developing infrastructure for Urban Air Mobility.  If you are an entrepreneur, investor, or a corporate or government leader, join me for this episode as we explore how we can win together by creating an economic engine for our community.

Can you use your mission to create a better world? I often talk about Rockstar Entrepreneurs. As far as legends go, Elon Musk is at the top of the mountain for Entrepreneurs. So, it often surprises many people to learn that he wasn’t the Founder of Tesla. In fact, he was their fourth CEO.   In this episode, we meet Marc Tarpenning, co-founder of Tesla, and Venture Partner at Spero Ventures. Marc takes us through the early days of Tesla, and shares some of the key lessons on the importance of co-founders, getting feedback from investors, and how he defines success (and it is not money), including how Marc is working on making a better world by investing in companies who are aligned with his personal mission.   We also talk about how COVID has introduced an opportunity for entrepreneurs to raise money and NOT be in Silicon Valley, and how to tie your mission focus with your investment pitch. Whether you want to create a world-changing company or want to know how to persevere through the difficult days of starting and scaling a business, this conversation is full of great examples and lessons learned.  If you want to learn more and inspired by this episode, check out Marc’s profile and his website below  https://www.linkedin.com/in/marctarpenning/    https://spero.vc/    If this episode inspires you to be part of the movement, and you believe, like me, that entrepreneurs are the answer to our future, message me so we can join forces to support building truly great companies in our region.   Subscribe to my channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCom_...   -  Mark Haney is a serial entrepreneur that has experience growing companies worth hundreds of millions of dollars. With all the challenges of this year, we can tend to overlook progress. For most businesses in the US, leaders are taking a hard look at their diversity shortcomings, and why making diversity part of their strategy is good for business. As these companies outline their path, they are intentionally designing the policies and systems that will combine the collective capabilities of people from different genders, races, sexual orientation, those with disabilities, and more.   In this episode, I talk with two leaders who are driving forward progress for woman in business and organizations where diversity is no longer optional. Krista Snelling, EVP, COO & CFO with Five Star Bank, and Preet Kuar, CEO of Pacific Staffing and Pacific ExecSearch. Krista and Preet share their journeys to leadership positions, and how they are using their experience to develop mentorship, community, and business programs. 2020 has turned into a year of crisis and hardship for many. When it seemed that we couldn’t take any more, our state was engulfed in historic wildfires. Whether we are dealing with a pandemic, social injustice, or disaster like wildfire, it can be hard for young people to imagine a world that is getting better. However, from ashes, something new can grow, if we build it right.  In this episode I am excited to talk to Dr. Gina Warren about how young entrepreneurs can create a better world and specifically how she is inspiring the youth in the inner city to begin their entrepreneurial journey.  Dr. Warren is a co-founder and executive director of the Neighborhood Wellness Foundation.  We discuss how growing up locally in the Sacramento area inspired her to become involved with the community programs and activities she is currently supporting, and how you can help make a difference with the entrepreneurs of the future.   If you want to learn more about Neighborhood Wellness Foundation check out their website and Facebook Page: http://neighborhoodwellness.org facebook.com/myWellnesshood - Subscribe to my channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCom_... - Mark Haney is a serial entrepreneur that has experience growing companies worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Many people would say we live in difficult times. I would say we live in a time of opportunity. Change starts with your mindset, and how you apply that mindset to a problem. When most people discuss a topic like gun ownership, they feel social pressure to take a side. Unfortunately, that mindset, many times, can mean we are not talking about solutions.    In this episode, I sit down with Jesse Meeker and Brandon Banks, the founders of the Placer Sporting Club. We discuss a wide range of topics relating to gun ownership in these times.  Brandon spent 8 years in the Marine Corps and Jesse was a Military Police Officer while serving in the U.S. Army, as well as a civilian police officer in Arizona.  They share how their military backgrounds helped them develop their business and the opportunities they see for responsible gun ownership, training and community involvement.    Positive change starts with a conversation. I hope this conversation helps our community see opportunity, where others see problems.   If you would like to learn more information about this business, visit their website and social media pages: www.placersportingclub.com https://www.facebook.com/PlacerSportingClub https://www.instagram.com/placer_sporting_club/ -  Subscribe to my channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCom_1MPt3p3YP8nJOa0eiKQ/featured - Mark Haney is a serial entrepreneur that has experience growing companies worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Is Health the NEW Wealth? As an entrepreneur, we hear regularly that winning requires commitment to our dream, perseverance, hard work and some luck. What happens when the work gets really hard, and we don’t have a personal foundation of health? As COVID changed my routines, it opened up space for me to explore this question. This episode is the start of a new track for the Mark Haney Show, where I share my journey towards a more holistic approach to entrepreneurship. Every few episodes I will take time to discuss my personal lessons, and include expert guests to help guide us toward a better understanding of how to build a foundation of health (regardless of your stage as an entrepreneur), so you can endure the tough times and be able to enjoy the challenges and success. How can you get started on a journey for building your foundation of health to prepare for the entrepreneurial battlefield? I am joined by Rick Spencer, Vice President at HaneyBiz, as we open this track and learn about my journey and some of the pillars of health I have established and am now exploring. What if Sacramento was nationally known as a Tier 1 region for entrepreneurs to start and grow companies?  As the HaneyBiz team launches the Sacramento Growth Factory (SGF), I sat down with Rick Spencer from our Leadership Team to discuss how SGF provides founders with a customized growth program designed to achieve tangible high priority milestones.  Every engagement is fueled by the hands-on support from our seasoned team combined with expertise from our committed network of vendors, advisors, corporations, government agencies and investors.  There is no question that our region has seen progress to support entrepreneurs. Unfortunately, the feedback we receive from the entrepreneurs who I have invested into directly is that they continue to struggle to connect with capital and customers in the region. In this episode, you will hear our thoughts on how business and community leaders will need to support entrepreneurs so that our region can create meaningful opportunities for this generation and generations to come.  If this episode inspires you to be part of the movement, and you believe, like me, that entrepreneurs are the answer to our future, message me so we can join forces to support building truly great companies in our region.
