Richard and Emmet are joined by Serie A commentator David Ferrini to talk about Italian football's forgotten Baggio - Dino Baggio. The former Parma, Juventus and Lazio midfielder lived firmly in the shadow of his more famous namesake, but was one of the finest Italian midfielders of his generation. TGU pays tribute to Dino by dissecting his career, his obscure UEFA cup record, and who in the current Serie A landscape shares similar characteristics to Baggio. Please subscribe and rate the TGU podcast, it would be greatly appreciated!

Will things get better for Inter, or substantially worse? Who will be the next to go? Can Richard survive another decade of Inter mediocrity?

Luca Hodges-Ramon and Emmet Gates are back to inspect Italy's Euro 2020 victory against England at Wembley. We review the final, take a look at where it was won and lost, how Roberto Mancini's side will look ahead of the 2022 World Cup, and whether Giorgio Chiellini will retire from Gli Azzurri or stay for one more tournament. As it's the 15th anniversary of Italy winning the 2006 World Cup, we also reflect on that win, and compare the 2006 side to the current iteration, and whether Italy winning the World Cup that summer was actually detrimental to the country in the long term. Campioni d'Europa!

Jul 15

Richard and Emmet return to preview the final of Euro 2020, which has caused an endless amount of inner turmoil for Richard. Who will he support, England - the team of his homeland - or Italy - the country he idolises - on Sunday? Emmet has no doubts about which side he's backing. We break down where the final could be won and lost, and talk about Roberto Mancini's elegance.  *Apologies for the background noise on this episode. FINALLY! TGU's next entry in our look back at Italy at the Euros is here, after many delays.  Luca Hodges-Ramon steps in for Richard, as he and Emmet delve deep into Italy's shambolic Euro 2004 campaign. Giovanni Trapattoni was in charge of Gli Azzurri, who somehow hung on to his job following Italy's equally disastrous 2002 World Cup run. This tournament is chiefly remembered for the 'biscotto' between Denmark and Sweden that eliminated Italy, but Il Trap's side were the architects of their own downfall.  Also, Bernardo 'F**king' Corradi??!! Seriously??

Jul 6

53 min 11 sec

Richard and Emmet return to discuss Italy's run to the final of Euro 2000. After the failure of not even qualifying for Euro '92, and the disastrous Euro '96 under Arrigo Sacchi, Italy, now coached by Dino Zoff, brought Gli Azzurri to the edge of glory at the turn of the century. Should Italy have won the tournament? How bad was Alessandro Del Piero in the competition? Should Roby Baggio have got a call-up? Was this Francesco Totti's best tournament showing for Italy?  Richard and Emmet break it all down.

May 21

1 hr 8 min

Richard and Emmet return to discuss Italy's foray in England in the Brit-pop tinged summer of 1996. Gli Azzurri actually made it to the competition this time, after the doomed attempt to qualify for Euro '92. Now under the tutelage of Arrigo Sacchi, Italy went into Euro '96 as one of the favourites, and Sacchi had an embarrassment of riches to choose from. Things however didn't pan out like everyone thought, because of, well, Sacchi. Italy were drawn in Group C alongside Germany, Russia and Czech Republic. How did they fare out? Listen and learn of Sacchi's sheer lunacy. Please take the time to subscribe, rate and review the TGU podcast. Your feedback is invaluable to us! Thank you.

With Euro 2020 (or 2021) on the horizon, TGU will look back at Italy's recent history at European Championships. We start with Gli Azzurri's failure to qualify for Euro '92, the forgotten tournament of the 1990s. Richard and Emmet delve into Italy's doomed campaign, looking at some of the puzzling decisions made by coach Azeglio Vicini, his relentless rotation of players, and the games that well and truly killed Italy's chances of qualifying. They also look at how well Italy would've done had they reached the competition, the last eight-team Euros. This Italy squad remains one of the best teams to never qualify for a Euros, and had only just reached the semi final of Italia '90. So what went wrong? David chats to us about how he got interested in Italian football, and how he made the leap into commentating. Please take the time to subscribe, rate and review the TGU podcast. In the aftermath of Serie A's disappointing performances in the Champions League Round of 16, Richard Hall and Emmet Gates dissect the biggest problem hurting Italian progress in the competition - the modernising of Italy's ancient stadia. Will the Italian government relax the laws permitting to renovating or building new stadia in the country in the near future? Can Serie A as a league collectively agree on how best to run their competition? Are 20 teams in the league several too many?  Richard and Emmet break all the issues down.

On the back of our recent TGU interview with Sven-Goran Eriksson, Richard Hall and Emmet Gates discuss whether the Lazio side of 2000/01 - Eriksson's last at the club - was the greatest side in the history of Italian football never to win a major honour. Lazio had maintained the core of their title-winning side from 1999/00, and broke the world transfer record to sign Hernan Crespo from Parma. Claudio Lopez, Angelo Peruzzi and Dino Baggio also arrived to bolster an almighty squad. Eriksson's acceptance of the England job early into the season changed everything however, and a season that promised so much ended with the club winning no major trophy, and the Sergio Cragnotti empire was beginning to crumble. Do you agree with us? Let us know!

On Wednesday November 25th, the world lost arguably the greatest footballer the game has ever seen. Diego Armando Maradona, a man who lived many lifetimes in one, died aged 60 in his homeland. Many tributes have been done over the weeks since his passing, and we at TGU felt it was only right, given his long association with Napoli, that we also paid our own small tribute to the diminutive genius. Site editor Emmet Gates had recently complied a ‘Six for 60‘ article for the great man’s 60th in October. Emmet and Richard Hall sat down to talk through six of his finest goals for the Partenopei, and his importance to the city of Naples.

Welcome to the first in a new podcast series for The Gentleman Ultra. TGU will review, inspect and analyse some of the greatest games in Serie A history, and we felt there was no better game to start than this all-time classic between Inter and Sampdoria from May 1991. Sampdoria were on the verge of winning an historic first Scudetto, but had to travel to Giovanni Trapattoni's Inter side with four games remaining. Inter, who were second going into the game, knew a loss what mean the end of their own title aspirations. What transpired over the course of the next 90 minutes is one of the greatest matches of the last 30 years, in any league. Richard Hall and Emmet Gates are joined by special guest Rob Smyth of The Guardian. Rob helps break down the game, and explains why indeed the match stands out as one of the best in Italian football history.
