When I was a kid, I remember my parents warning me that if I hung around with the “bad kids,” I’d be painted with the same brush, and people would think I was a bad kid, too.  It wasn’t that they expected me to be a perfect angel - but they understood that as humans, we are susceptible to the influences around us, so controlling our environment was key to following God’s commandments and avoiding the temptation to sin.  Your environment will always overcome your willpower.  If your desire is to stay warm, then you can layer on warm clothing or light a warm fire.  BUT in the long run, your best bet to stay warm is moving out of the meat freezer.  The truth is, humans sin.  It’s in our nature.  Jesus was the only perfect being to ever walk the earth, and God doesn’t expect that of us - but He does expect us to do our best.  We can’t control what others do, but we can control our exposure to those people.  Sin always sells the promise of comfort - but it's never able to deliver.  Overcoming the false promise of sin may just be a matter of changing your environment. In this episode, I'm revealing my take on the only spiritual environment that beats your willpower to defeat sin...every. single. time.Just as God wants us to take an active role in removing temptation and sin from our lives, He wants to be an active part of your artistic endeavors!  Got questions about prophetic art and what it looks like?  I’ve created a resource that will tell you!  Click below and I’ll send it straight to your inbox! The 5 Biggest Misconceptions about Prophetic Arthttps://thrive.matttommeymentoring.com/5-biggest-misconceptions-about-prophetic-artConnect with me online:https://www.matttommeymentoring.comhttps://www.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.youtube.com/mjtommey to watch the podcast on YouTube!

I'm fascinated by God's “glory stories"—amazing testimonies of the grace and goodness of God.  Artists who step out in faith and invite the Holy Spirit into their creativity are full of those stories.God's original glory story begins with creativity.  In the beginning God created.  Mankind was made in the image of our Creator; every single one of us is called to create. It's our collective calling… even when we're unaware of our creativity… even if we attempt to bury our creativity out of reach. Our guest Latimer Bowen thought she'd put away her creativity for good.  For forty years, she protected herself from producing any art.  Finally, in 2009, she said yes to creating an image with God…and the results are nothing short of miraculous. Since then, God has empowered her creativity in equipping others to go into all the world to preach the gospel.  Today Latimer leads a prophetic art enterprise called Project 7 Billion with a mandate to reach the nations with anointed art evangelism. In this episode, we'll witness a few of the “glory stories” that are only possible when we are obedient to the call to create with the Holy Spirit.Make sure to connect with Latimer Bowen through her website at https://project7billion.org or her Facebook page at https://facebook.com/project 7billion!Are you feeling called to create with the Lord?  A lot of artists struggle to understand what this looks like, so I’ve created a free guide to help you put aside your misconceptions about prophetic art so you can embrace the truth and experience of asking God into your creative process!  Click below and I’ll send it your way!The 5 Biggest Misconceptions about Prophetic Arthttps://thrive.matttommeymentoring.com/5-biggest-misconceptions-about-prophetic-art===========Connect with Matt online:www.matttommeymentoring.comwww.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartistwww.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartistYou can also watch this podcast on YouTube at youtube.com/mjtommey.  Be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss an episode!

Over the years, I’ve noticed an interesting trend in the artists in the Thriving Christian Artist community.  They discover how to trust the Lord and invite Him into their art… but they see creating a successful business as super-heroic - something out of their reach. But really...isn't a “superhero” just an ordinary person who's been drawn into an extraordinary situation?   From the outside, God-inspired entrepreneurs and business owners can look as if they're living out amazing superhero stories.  But in reality, they're people just like you and me— people who, when called by God, simply said, “Yes.” Today's episode is like listening in on a real-life superhero origin story. My guest, Charles Ciepiel, is a long-time friend and newly inspired entrepreneur who simply said yes…and the rest is an amazing story. His story is an incredible example of the joy and breakthrough, as well as the timing and favor, that comes with wild abandon to saying YES to the Lord.Be sure to listen in on this episode, then follow Charles Ciepiel's entrepreneur journey at http://charliejoechai.com.And if you’re struggling to grow your art business, I hope you’ll check out my newest free resource, which discusses the biggest mistakes I see artists making when pricing their art - because I made them, too!The 5 Biggest Mistakes Artists Make When Pricing Their Arthttps://thrive.matttommeymentoring.com/5-biggest-mistakes-when-pricing-art===========Connect with Matt online:www.matttommeymentoring.comwww.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartistwww.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartistYou can also watch this podcast on YouTube at youtube.com/mjtommey.  Be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss an episode!

Have you ever felt like your career - or your life - is taking one step forward...and two steps back?  Like you’re pushing a giant boulder up a mountain and making little progress? Like you’re doing all you know to do, but nothing you do seems to move you any further ahead? It’s frustrating, confusing...and can make you want to throw up your hands and quit!My friend, I have been there more than once...so you are not alone!  We all go through seasons when things just don’t seem to be going our way, no matter how hard we try.But the key word there is “season.”  Experiencing a season like this doesn't mean it's time to give up your calling as an artist.  It means it’s time for a shift. In this episode of 5-Minute Mentoring, I'm giving you some real advice for what you can do when things just aren't working.  Some suggestions are spiritual.  Some are practical.  All of them will serve as life preservers to help you navigate those times in your life when the seas are rough.Remember...God sees the bigger picture.  He wants you to thrive.  He created you to thrive!  If you’d like to learn more about how you can thrive as an artist in the Kingdom, I invite you to check out a new resource I’ve created, “The 3 Biggest Misconceptions to Thriving as a Christian Artist.”  Click below and I’ll send it straight to your inbox! The 3 Biggest Misconceptions to Thriving as a Christian Artisthttps://thrive.matttommeymentoring.com/misconceptions-to-thrivingConnect with me online:https://www.matttommeymentoring.comhttps://www.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.youtube.com/mjtommey to watch the podcast on YouTube!

If you’ve ever tried to pitch a tent, you know that tension and stretch is the difference between a tent that offers you protection from the elements...and just a pile of nylon and poles.   The Bible talks about enlarging the place of your tent, which requires that same tension in order to be successful. As an artist of faith, are you holding in tension both the dream and the hard work it takes to grow in what God has given you? This episode is one of the most thought-provoking conversations I've had on how faithful artists are meant to walk out their faith in the arts. Our guest, Marlita Hill, is a choreographer, artist, and author who influences and inspires Christian creatives through her Kingdom Artist Initiative. She's been serving the Lord, living in the faith and art world for many years, and she shares her experience to help fellow artists build a healthy working relationship between their faith and art career.Discover more about Marlita and her new book, Defying Discord, and all the wonderful things she’s doing with the Kingdom Artist Initiative at http://marlitahill.com/.Struggling with how to create your art with God without feeling you have to fit into the “church” box? There’s a holiday trend I’ve noticed recently where parents are encouraging potential gift-givers to consider giving their kids experiences like trips to the zoo, an afternoon movie outing, summer camp tuition, etc., rather than toys.As a parent who remembers all too well being surrounded by piles of “stuff” around the Christmas tree, I really appreciate this trend towards giving the gift of time and memories. The toys will break.  The clothes will be outgrown. The games will lay forgotten. But the stories and memories will live on forever. It’s true about art, too.  The prophetic art we're now creating with God will eventually fade away...but the experience won’t.If we become very aware of creating with our Father, we can treasure that family experience forever. In this episode, we're talking about how to raise our awareness of the Holy Spirit's presence in the creative process.  Awareness invites His transformation to flow to and through you, whatever you're creating with Him.Would you like to discover more about the process of creating prophetic art with God? It’s probably obvious that I’m passionate about both creating art and the process behind it.  I'm also just as passionate about helping fellow artists experience breakthrough and transformation in their creativity. As Christian artists, we know the Word says that transformation comes through the renewing of our mind.Well, I've come to learn how God uses the beautiful operating system that He put inside us to bring transformation—the renewing of our mind through a powerful process called neuroplasticity. That's why I'm thrilled to introduce you to today’s guest, Dorothy J. Cook.  She's sharing creative brain hacks that will help you use your imagination in effective ways to align your heart and mind with the Word of God.This episode is power-packed with fantastic tools, tips, and tricks you'll want to practice and even share with others!Learn more about Dorothy and even grab her free Brain Hacks 101 guide on her website at http://dorothyjcook.comRenewing your mind is the key to partnering with God to creating art that honors and glorifies Him - but there are a lot of misconceptions about how prophetic art works!  I’m sharing the truth about 5 of the biggest misconceptions about prophetic art in my new guide!  Click below and I’ll send it to your inbox! The 5 Biggest Misconceptions about Prophetic Art *Free Guide*https://thrive.matttommeymentoring.com/5-biggest-misconceptions-about-prophetic-art===========Connect with Matt online:www.matttommeymentoring.comwww.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartistwww.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartistYou can also watch this podcast on YouTube at youtube.com/mjtommey.  Be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss an episode!_______________________

Is there an area in your life that's become a stronghold for sin?  It might show up as a negative coping mechanism or an addiction that you just can't seem to shake.I've been there.  For many years, I dealt with patterns of pornography and religious performance.  Both worked together to prevent me from getting to the fullness of God's plan for my life.Until I finally, by God’s grace, broke free.In this episode, I break down exactly how I was able to break free from these habitual sins and negative patterns.  I'm giving you the same Biblical blueprint I used to let God work His grace in me.  I call them the Four Steps to Freedom. It doesn't matter what your challenge may be. Jesus didn't die for you to be going to Heaven and yet be continually tormented in sin. He came to set the captives free.Today, I can look back at the struggle—and the toll these patterns took on my life—with gratitude for the grace of God.  I can tell you that there IS hope…if you grab hold of His hand and walk through the steps to freedom.I wrote about this in my first book, “Unlocking the Heart of the Artist.”  You can grab hold of the newly revised 10th anniversary edition at Amazon.Unlocking the Heart of the Artist: A Practical Guide to Fulfilling Your Creative Call as an Artist in the Kingdom https://www.amazon.com/dp/1460930258/Connect with me online:https://www.matttommeymentoring.comhttps://www.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.youtube.com/mjtommey to watch the podcast on YouTube!

If you believe that God can create through you, that He can speak to others through the medium of your artistic talents and ability, then you're going to want to listen to this episode of the Thriving Christian Artist podcast! As artists who desire to partner with God in creating Prophetic Art, discerning God's voice is something that we must do - but that doesn’t mean it’s easy!In this episode we discuss all the details about hearing God's voice with my friend and guest, Taylor Jensen.  We’ll ask the hard questions, likeWhat are the different ways we hear God's voice?  How do you discern if it's God's voice versus your own? How does God speak specifically to you and through you?And if this is a brand-new experience for you, how do you even get started?Believe it or not, this is actually a pretty controversial subject - people have a lot of strong feelings about it!   Taylor is no stranger to that controversy, as he regularly speaks on how to seek and discern the voice of God.  He also served for years as a missionary with Youth With a Mission (YWAM), going from desperate places like Colombia to Cambodia to… California!  Our yearning to hear God’s voice is universal.⭐ Listener Special ⭐Taylor has a wonderful Bible study called He Speaks: How to Hear, Listen, and Understand the Voice of God.   This four-week Bible Study is designed to help you discover the ways God speaks to His people throughout the Bible so that you can begin to hear Him like never before.  And he's offering my podcast listeners a special savings of 20% when you purchase the study - just use the discount code THRIVING!   Thanks to Taylor for this special opportunity!Connect with Taylor online at http://FireplaceFaith.comhttps://instagram.com/taylorcjensenhttps://facebook.com/taylorcjensen===========Connect with Matt online:www.matttommeymentoring.comwww.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartistwww.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartistYou can also watch this podcast on YouTube at youtube.com/mjtommey.  Be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss an episode!

I'm a major coffee fanatic.  On any given morning you're going to find me in my comfy chair with my journal, sipping a delicious dark roast blend. As I savor the rich flavor and aroma, I appreciate that it doesn't just start in the cup.  The journey from the tree to my coffee cup is a process.Coffee has to be grown, selected, dried, roasted, rested, ground, brewed – all before it becomes the heavenly beverage we're able to pour and partake in.From planting to percolating, we can appreciate every single step.  Even the leftover dregs are part of the process.Just like that exquisite cup of coffee, creativity is also a progressive process:Grown – cultivated from a kernel of an ideaSelected – not every idea is ready to be usedDried – the Son removes unnecessary partsRoasted – the Father's fire reveals the essenceRested – the soul of the artist is expressedGround – the grinding of productivity is doneBrewed – water/heat of the Spirit transformsIt's what I call Prophetic Percolation.  It's a prophetic picture for the process of creativity in Prophetic Art.That’s what I’m talking about on today’s episode of 5 Minute Mentoring! If you want more inspiration about the process of creating art with God, grab my brand new book:Prophetic Art: A Practical Guide to Creating with the Holy Spirithttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B098WHPBLSConnect with me online:https://www.matttommeymentoring.comhttps://www.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.youtube.com/mjtommey to watch the podcast on YouTube!

Wherever you are in your journey as an artist in business, you can be sure that sooner or later, you will be tested, as if by fire.  You'll be given an opportunity to step out in faith, beyond the limits of your own knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. It’s easy to say that we know that God will provide...but actually trusting Him enough to let go and step out in faith can be easier said than done. That's why it's a joy to introduce you to Lonnie and Abby Alverson of Hearth and Home Forge.  They're the real deal – a married couple, living and working together, as they run a fruitful artist studio in the Kingdom. In this episode, find out how they trusted the Lord to transition Lonnie out of a 27-year corporate career into full-time dedication to detailed hand-forged metal work… in the midst of a global pandemic panic.I find their journey has so much in common with how my wife, Tanya, and I had to step out in faith into artist entrepreneurship – learning to work as a team, both at home and in business.Enjoy my conversation with Lonnie and Abby, and be sure to connect with them online:Website:  https://www.hearthandhomeforge.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hearthandhomeforgeI talk much more about my journey into artist entrepreneurship in my first book, Unlocking the Heart of the Artist.  Check out the newly revised 10th anniversary edition on Amazon now!Unlocking the Heart of the Artist: A Practical Guide to Fulfilling Your Creative Call as an Artist in the Kingdom https://www.amazon.com/Unlocking-Heart-Artist-Practical-Fulfilling/dp/1460930258 ===========Connect with Matt online:www.matttommeymentoring.comwww.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartistwww.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartistYou can also watch this podcast on YouTube at youtube.com/mjtommey.  Be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss an episode!

In this world of glow-ups and the ‘Gram, it’s easy to think that everyone’s life is perfect, that nobody else struggles the way we do.  But we know that the truth is, none of us is perfect.  We all struggle - and those struggles have helped us become the people we are.  If you want to be a leader in the arts – to have influence and be a blessing in the artist community – then others have to know you've been through some stuff.  You have to talk about the battle that comes with the blessing.  Our courage and willingness to be vulnerable, to acknowledge our weaknesses, and to share our struggles are actually one of our most powerful strengths as leaders, as artists, and as humans. When Jacob wrestled with God, he refused to let go until God blessed him, just so he could walk away from the wrestling match with a limp. When you wrestle with God, get ready to walk away with a new limp… plus a new name, new character, new reputation, and a new level of authority for your calling. In this episode of 5-Minute Mentoring, find out what happens when you choose to embrace the hard-won struggles, when you can really own your limp and the name that goes with it.Want to read about my own struggles as I’ve grown my art business?  Check out the 10th anniversary of my first book, Unlocking the Heart of the Artist, on Amazon at the link below!Unlocking the Heart of the Artist: 10th Anniversary Edition on Amazonhttps://www.amazon.com/Unlocking-Heart-Artist-Practical-Fulfilling/dp/1460930258Connect with me online:https://www.matttommeymentoring.comhttps://www.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.youtube.com/mjtommey to watch the podcast on YouTube!

As an artist in the church, do you find yourself in a peculiar place, navigating between two different worlds?  Maybe you're a Christian with a vision for your work that doesn't fit in the "Christian art" box.  You may also find yourself outside of mainstream support for the work God has called you to do.There was a time when the church was the primary patron of the arts and culture. Now artists are invited to leave extreme creativity at the church door. Maybe it's time to bring back old school "patronage of the arts" with a new twist—creating support for artists inside the church that also creates more influence outside.Today, I'm having a conversation with my new friend and advocate for the arts, Justus Stout, about the role of art and artists in the church and in the world.  Justus leads Renew the Arts, an organization on a mission to liberate Christian creativity through patronage and sponsorships. Wait, we're talking about artist sponsorship – even though I'm like the king of advocating artist entrepreneurship. Those are in conflict, right? Find out the real deal as Justus and I hash out our differences in this episode.I talk much more about my journey into artist entrepreneurship in my first book, Unlocking the Heart of the Artist.  Check out the newly revised 10th anniversary edition on Amazon now!Unlocking the Heart of the Artist: A Practical Guide to Fulfilling Your Creative Call as an Artist in the Kingdom https://www.amazon.com/Unlocking-Heart-Artist-Practical-Fulfilling/dp/1460930258 Also connect with Justus Stout and Renew the Arts on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/renewthearts/ and be sure to visit https://www.renewthearts.org/===========Connect with Matt online:www.matttommeymentoring.comwww.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartistwww.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartistYou can also watch this podcast on YouTube at youtube.com/mjtommey.  Be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss an episode!

Have you ever experienced the power of transformation by association? Years ago, someone told me, “Never underestimate the power of the rooms that you're in.” The rooms that you choose to live your life in really do matter.  If you find out you're the smartest person in the room, then the smartest thing you can do is find a new room. If you continue to stay in the same room, around the same people, doing the same thing that you've always done, then you're going to get the same results or maybe even worse…  OR you can change rooms.Find another room with people who can help you elevate what you see as possible. Spend your time around people who are further along than you, where you can be mentored and grow. That's the power of association and why I started Created to Thrive Artist Mentoring Program.Come join us in one of the most powerful rooms you'll ever be a part of.  It's the place where you can associate with other artists who love the Lord, who are also on a journey of transformation— spiritually, artistically, financially. Now's the time to get in on our Created to Thrive Artist Mentoring Program. Doors to this room only open up a couple of times a year.Click the link below for all the details and to enroll!🌟 Created To Thrive Artist Mentoring Program 🌟https://thrive.matttommeymentoring.com/CTTMentoringConnect with me online:https://www.matttommeymentoring.comhttps://www.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.youtube.com/mjtommey to watch the podcast on YouTube!

When I was a kid, the phrase  “One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Treasure” fascinated me.  I imagined someone rifling through a trashcan and holding up a gold nugget in triumph.  It’s entirely possible that I voluntarily took out the trash just for the chance to discover a treasure of my own.My guest on the podcast today uses her creative gifting to literally turn trash into treasure - a process she calls “Beautifully Broken.”  Michelle Ruschman, the Prodigal Artist, is a fused glass artist who takes broken glass and things that other people might discard and restores them into beautiful pieces of art. Michelle's work is connecting others with the notion of brokenness being a superpower and not our kryptonite.  It’s not unlike what the Lord does with every single one of us - He takes our broken pieces and fuses them together into something beautiful and meaningful.  I’m excited to introduce you to Michelle today so you can hear her story of restoration and the power of God!I first met Michelle when she participated in the Artist Rise Up Masterclass last September, and as it happens, we’re in the middle of the Artist Rise Up Masterclass + Art Challenge right now!  We’ve only got a few days left, but you can still join in the fun, fellowship, worship, and inspiration!  The Masterclass + Art Challenge is free, but you do need to register at the link below so we can send you all the details!Artist Rise Up Masterclass + Art Challengehttps://www.artistriseup.comAnd be sure to connect with Michelle Ruschman online:https://www.instagram.com/michelle_ruschman_art/https://www.facebook.com/groups/319440555461918/https://www.michelleruschman.com/===========Have you checked out my new books on Amazon yet?  Prophetic Art: A Practical Guide for Creating with the Holy Spirithttps://www.amazon.com/Prophetic-Art-Practical-Creating-Spirit/dp/B098WHPBLS Unlocking the Heart of the Artist: A Practical Guide to Fulfilling Your Creative Call as an Artist in the Kingdom https://www.amazon.com/Unlocking-Heart-Artist-Practical-Fulfilling/dp/1460930258===========Connect with Matt online:www.matttommeymentoring.comwww.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartistwww.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartistYou can also watch this podcast on YouTube at youtube.com/mjtommey.  Be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss an episode!

Have you ever gotten stuck in the “not enough” cycle?  It happens to all of us - we burn dinner, we make a mistake at work, a painting doesn’t turn out the way we’d hoped, and suddenly we decide that we’re just not __________ enough.  When it happens over and over, it’s enough to make you throw up your hands in defeat!  There’s so much pressure! But what happens when someone sees your work and gasps, “Oh, my goodness!  This piece blows my mind!”  or someone takes a bite of your cookie and sighs with pleasure.  Suddenly, you see your work from that person’s perspective - and that shifts your own perspective a little bit.    When we get stuck in a rut, when we’re just not feeling inspired, or when we decide we’re “not enough,” a small but powerful perspective shift is what we need. In the latest episode of 5-Minute Mentoring, we’re talking about how changing our perspective from “what we’re creating” to what we’re creating with God can change our entire reality and release the pressure valve of success. And speaking of changing perspectives, we are having such a great time changing our perspectives of our own work and its role in the Kingdom in the Artist Rise Up Masterclass + Art Challenge!  I love seeing so many artists sharing their work and taking on the daily challenges to stretch their comfort zones (and to win some awesome prizes!).  It’s not too late to join us - we’ll be hosting two more Masterclasses next week, and the Facebook group is buzzing with excitement!  Come join us!Click the link below for all the details and to register!🌟 Artist Rise Up Masterclass + Art Challenge 🌟https://www.artistriseup.comConnect with me online:https://www.matttommeymentoring.comhttps://www.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.youtube.com/mjtommey to watch the podcast on YouTube!

We talk about the transformative power of God moving through our art, but He doesn’t stop there!  So much of the transformation we experience is through relationships - with those around us, with potential clients, with other artists, and more. That’s one of the reasons that I just love the story of my friend Bobbie Blakely, one of the most truly joyous people I know.  Bobbie is a jewelry designer who uses her creative gifting to help others celebrate their victories in the Lord by taking what’s in their heart and putting it into their hands as wearable, meaningful art.Oscar Wilde may have said that life imitates art, but in Bobbie’s studio, it’s the other way around.  Her beautiful designs capture the stories and lives of her clients in a deep and powerful way.Bobbie has been a member of our Created to Thrive Artist Mentoring Program for a couple of years now, and it’s truly been an honor to witness her own transformation as she has helped others by transforming their stories into art.  I can’t wait for you to meet her and to hear her incredible story!Oh, and by the way...we just kicked off the Artist Rise Up Masterclass + Art Challenge, but it’s not too late to join in the fun, fellowship, worship, and inspiration!  The Masterclass + Art Challenge is free, but you do need to register at the link below so we can send you all the details!Artist Rise Up Masterclass + Art Challengehttps://www.artistriseup.comAnd be sure to connect with Bobbie Blakely online:https://www.instagram.com/bobbieblakely/https://www.facebook.com/bobbieblakelyjewelryhttps://bobbieblakely.com/===========Have you checked out my new books on Amazon yet?  Prophetic Art: A Practical Guide for Creating with the Holy Spirithttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B098WHPBLS Unlocking the Heart of the Artist: A Practical Guide to Fulfilling Your Creative Call as an Artist in the Kingdom https://www.amazon.com/Unlocking-Heart-Artist-Practical-Fulfilling/dp/1460930258===========Connect with Matt online:www.matttommeymentoring.comwww.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartistwww.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartistYou can also watch this podcast on YouTube at youtube.com/mjtommey.  Be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss an episode!

“A dream without a plan is just a wish.” - Katherine Paterson, authorDo you ever feel like the dreams that you hold so dearly in your heart are just never, ever going to come to pass?  That no matter how hard you work, things just aren’t panning out the way you want them to?When this happens, it’s easy to give up, to downgrade our dream to just a wish - because we don’t have a plan, to use Katherine Paterson’s metaphor.  But here’s the thing - God has a plan for ALL our dreams!  He has architected our lives so carefully and beautifully… but on His schedule, not ours!  We may not always understand God’s timing, but we must have faith in His promise - that He has a divine design for our lives and that He’s working all things together for our good! The perspective shift that comes when you begin to respond to and encounter the Word of the Lord is exactly what led me to start the Created to Thrive Artist Mentoring Program.  When God called me to raise up an army of artists to reveal His glory, I had no idea what His plan was for this dream - and I never could’ve dreamed on that night in 2009 that He would’ve taken me on this particular journey.  He sure is full of surprises! If you’re searching for a perspective shift, to more clearly understand God’s plan for your dreams and your art, I hope you’ll join us for the Artist Rise Up Masterclass + Art Challenge!  The first of the 5 masterclass sessions starts on September 20th, but we’re already having a blast in the private Facebook group, where participants are sharing their stories and their art with folks from all over the world!  The Masterclass + Art Challenge is free, but you do need to register at the link below so we can send you all the details!Artist Rise Up Masterclass + Art Challengehttps://www.artistriseup.comHope to see you there, and remember...you were Created to Thrive!Connect with me online:https://www.matttommeymentoring.comhttps://www.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.youtube.com/mjtommey to watch the podcast on YouTube!

Jesus said that it rains on the just and unjust alike, and our ability to walk through the seasons of life - with grace, with faith, and with a “yes” in our hearts - really defines how we experience life and how we're able to walk in the goodness of God. One of the people who I've had the great privilege of the last 4+ years to watch do this very thing is Jan Thoreen Lewis, who has been part of our Created to Thrive Mentoring Program and is in our Mastery Program.  Jan has walked through some pretty tough stuff in these last few years - health challenges with her husband, her business changing, moving - stuff that would make most of us throw up our hands.  And yet, in the middle of all that, Jan has continued to point her heart to Jesus, to renew her mind to the truth, and give God her “yes”, even when it's not been easy.  I'm super excited to bring your story to you today because I know no matter where you are today - whether you're walking through an incredible season or through a challenging season - Jan's perspective on the journey that we all walk is really going to be a big encouragement to you.You know what else makes these difficult seasons a little easier?  Surrounding yourself with encouraging, supportive people who understand what you’re going through - and that’s what you’ll find in the Artist Rise Up Masterclass + Art Challenge!  We’ll have live teachings and times of worship, a daily art challenge, lots of prizes, and just a great time for fellowship, connection, and learning with artists of different media from all over the world! The fun officially starts on September 20th, but join now and you’ll get early access to the private Facebook group!Click the link below for all the details and to register!Artist Rise Up Masterclass + Art Challengehttps://www.artistriseup.comAnd be sure to connect with Jan Thoreen Lewis online:https://www.janthoreenlewis.com/https://www.instagram.com/janthoreenlewisfineart/https://www.facebook.com/ThoreenStudio===========Have you checked out my new books on Amazon yet?  Prophetic Art: A Practical Guide for Creating with the Holy Spirithttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B098WHPBLS Unlocking the Heart of the Artist: A Practical Guide to Fulfilling Your Creative Call as an Artist in the Kingdom https://www.amazon.com/Unlocking-Heart-Artist-Practical-Fulfilling/dp/1460930258===========Connect with Matt online at matttommeymentoring.com or on Instagram and Facebook @thethrivingchristianartistYou can also watch this podcast on YouTube at youtube.com/mjtommey.  Be sure to check it out!

We typically think of tension as a negative thing, right?  Tension is where our fears are magnified, where our past mistakes replay in our mind, where the imposter syndrome kicks in.  We’re usually trying to release tension in our lives, not create more of it!But tension can also create beautiful things.  Think about the violin and other stringed instruments.  The reason that sound is produced from the instrument is due to the tension that’s created between the wood and the strings.  Without that tension, the bow would make a sound resembling a dying duck!  That tension is what allows musicians to create beautiful music that moves people to tears! But if tension or its friends - fear, imposter syndrome, and doubt - are preventing you from creating beauty, that’s the time to step in and make a change.  That’s why I hope you’ll join us for one of our most anticipated events of the year, the Artist Rise Up Masterclass + Art Challenge!  During the month of September, we’ll have live teachings and times of worship, an art challenge, lots of prizes, and just a great time for fellowship, connection, and learning with artists of different media from all over the world! When you start to align with His purpose for your life, the tension that is created can be a thing of beauty as it helps you step into the divine design that God has designed especially for you.  I hope you’ll join us for the Artist Rise Up Masterclass + Art Challenge!Click the link below for all the details!Artist Rise Up Masterclass + Art Challengehttps://www.artistriseup.comConnect with me online:https://www.matttommeymentoring.comhttps://www.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.youtube.com/mjtommey to watch the podcast on YouTube!

Have you ever stood in the middle of a suspension bridge when the wind kicked up?  Talk about a bumpy ride!  And even though you know logically that you’re safe, it doesn’t necessarily feel that way!  Sometimes our journey to what God has called us to do can feel like that suspension bridge. Even when we trust in His plan, it can still make our knees a little weak!I’m excited to introduce you to my friend Gena Kearn, who is in our Created to Thrive Artist Mentoring Program and is at a place in her journey that we call “crossing the bridge” - that is, moving from her current career as an art teacher and hobbyist into a full-time career as an artist!  I know that you’ll enjoy hearing Gena’s story! And be sure to connect with Gena at https://www.instagram.com/genakearnart/ or at https://genakearn.com/.I also wanted to invite you to our upcoming Artist Rise Up Masterclass + Art Challenge, which starts on September 20th.   If you’re ready to discover how to thrive spiritually, artistically, and in business as an artist in God's Kingdom, then you need to be here!  The masterclass series includes 5 live training sessions with me, a fun art challenge, a Facebook group where you can connect with other Christian artists, and some really cool prizes!  It’s one of my favorite events that we hold, and I hope to see you there!  Click the link below for more details and to register.Artist Rise Up Masterclass + Art Challengehttps://www.artistriseup.com===========Connect with me online:https://www.matttommeymentoring.comhttps://www.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.youtube.com/mjtommey to watch the podcast on YouTube!

We artists talk a lot about the vision we have for our art.  But what does it actually look like when God releases His vision into our lives?  Is it a lightning bolt from the sky? Does He appear in a dream?  I think it’s less about the vehicle and much more about us.  I believe the Lord releases His vision to us in two ways - and I’m sharing more about those two ways on today’s episode of 5-Minute Mentoring! If you’re looking for that design, for that vision that God has for your life, then I hope you’ll join us for one of our most anticipated events of the year, the Artist Rise Up Masterclass!  During the month of September, we’ll have live teachings, an art challenge, lots of prizes, and just a great time for fellowship, connection, and learning with artists of different media from all over the world! When you start to align with His purpose for your life, you are able to step clearly and quickly into the things that God has designed especially for you.  I hope you’ll join us for Artist Rise Up!Click the link below for all the details!Artist Rise Up Masterclasshttps://www.artistriseup.comConnect with me online:https://www.matttommeymentoring.comhttps://www.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.youtube.com/mjtommey to watch the podcast on YouTube!

Even if you don’t know Don Potter by name, you have definitely heard his music.  For decades, he was a very successful musician and music producer in Nashville, contributing to over 100 best-selling albums of country music stars who are now household names, such as the Judds, Kenny Chesney, Reba McEntire, Hank Williams Jr., Trisha Yearwood, and Willie Nelson. But it wasn’t until the Lord changed the direction of his life in the late 90s that I came to know Don as an incredible worship leader and songwriter.  He completely changed the way that I understood the nature of worship - that it wasn’t a passive event but a powerful, transformative experience that manifests in all areas in our lives - whether we are lifting our hands in corporate worship or lifting our creative tools in the studio. Don is a spiritual father to creatives all over the world, and I’m so excited to have him on the podcast to share his perspective on the process of creating prophetic art, particularly as a musician! To learn more about and connect with Don online, visit https://www.potterschoolhaus.com! ===========Have you checked out my new books on Amazon yet?

As we close out this month-long celebration of the 10th anniversary edition of my first book, “Unlocking the Heart of the Artist,” I want to end with the beginning - or, more specifically, the forward of the book, which was written by my good friend, mentor, and spiritual father, Ray Hughes.  Ray captures so perfectly the spirit of this book and how we, as artists, are not just blindly following some prescribed plan for our lives.  God actually created us to be creative, and by pursuing our art and fulfilling that creativity, we are truly revealing His Kingdom all over earth. It’s so easy to get caught up in the busy-ness of life - the sports practices, the meetings, the emails, the grocery lists.  But there we’re just in survival mode - just getting through the day.  This, my friends, is not what God wants for us! It’s not what He created us for!  He wants us to thrive - and He’s given us all the tools we need to do just that. So when you experience periods where you’re surviving but not thriving in your life, know that God has equipped you with the tools and skills you need to thrive, to go out and live the life that He designed for you in the Kingdom…because you were created to thrive!Unlocking the Heart of the Artist: 10th Anniversary Edition on Amazon (Just Released!)https://www.amazon.com/Unlocking-Heart-Artist-Practical-Fulfilling/dp/1460930258Connect with me online:https://www.matttommeymentoring.comhttps://www.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.youtube.com/mjtommey to watch the podcast on YouTube!_______________________

Marian Wright Edelman said, “You can’t be what you can’t see,” and in my experience, that statement is true on so many levels.  I’ve mentored thousands of Christian artists over the years, and I’ve noticed that many of them didn’t have a clear picture in their heads of what it actually looks like to be a Thriving Christian Artist - so they struggled to achieve that goal.  That’s actually one of my goals with this podcast - to introduce you to Christian artists around the world who are truly thriving as they seek to reveal God’s glory through their artistic pursuits.  And I’m thrilled to introduce you today to my friend Simon Bull!Simon hails from the U.K. but makes his home in California.  His bright, vibrant paintings echo natural systems while also surprising and delighting his audience with playful twists and quirks. He was the 2019 official artist for the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C., the official artist to boxing legend Muhammad Ali, and the official artist for the 2002 Winter Olympics.  His work is highly sought after and hangs in galleries and homes all over the world.Connect with Simon on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/simonbullart/ and visit his website at https://bullart.com/ for more about him and his work!===========Have you checked out my new books on Amazon yet? Be sure to check it out!_______________________

Take a look around you.  How strong is your community?  I don’t mean just people who live in your town - I mean a caring community that supports, encourages, and takes care of each other in good times and bad.  Maybe it’s your church, your Sunday school class, your book club, or your core group of high school friends.  Maybe it’s an online community of people you’ve never met in person but who are your biggest cheerleaders. We are not designed to walk through difficulty, healing, or fulfilling our callings alone. We are created for community, to connect with and support each other, to link arms and stand together.  God created Eve so Adam wouldn’t be alone, and He calls us to be spiritual fathers and mothers, nurturing and raising up the next generation of prophetic artists to step into their place in His Kingdom. In today’s episode of 5-Minute Mentoring, we’re talking about how essential community is to our own growth, success, and happiness.  Just as iron sharpens iron - we strengthen each other. If you’re looking to connect with other Christian artists, keep an eye out in the next few weeks as we share info on our Artists Rise Up Challenge, the Created to Thrive Mentoring Program, and more!   Unlocking the Heart of the Artist: 10th Anniversary Edition on Amazon (Just Released!)https://www.amazon.com/Unlocking-Heart-Artist-Practical-Fulfilling/dp/1460930258Connect with me online:https://www.matttommeymentoring.comhttps://www.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.youtube.com/mjtommey to watch the podcast on YouTube!

I’ve heard it said that it’s one thing to be a tourist - but it’s another to be a traveler. A few years ago, I had the chance to spend a month “Down Under” in the beautiful country of Australia, meeting incredible artists, teaching workshops, and speaking and sharing about prophetic art with the amazing people I met there.During the week in which I was teaching a basketry class, I got to put on my traveler hat and experience life as the Australians do, thanks to Grace Bailey and her husband!  They not only hosted me in their home in Ballarat, Victoria, but they also fed me, showed me all the sights (including the ones that the tourists never see!), and gave me the celebrity treatment.  It was truly an honor and a privilege to be invited into the Baileys’ life and home during my week in Ballarat. In this podcast, I’m thrilled to introduce you to Grace and for you to hear what God is doing through her and her art.  Her stories of God’s provision, blessing, and even miracles are a testament to the power and the promise of prophetic art.  Want to connect with Grace online?  Visit her website at https://gracebailey.net/ or follow her on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/gracebailey.net/.===========Have you checked out my new books on Amazon yet?  Prophetic Art: A Practical Guide for Creating with the Holy Spirithttps://www.amazon.com/Prophetic-Art-Practical-Creating-Spirit/dp/B098WHPBLS Unlocking the Heart of the Artist: A Practical Guide to Fulfilling Your Creative Call as an Artist in the Kingdom https://www.amazon.com/Unlocking-Heart-Artist-Practical-Fulfilling/dp/1460930258===========Connect with Matt online at matttommeymentoring.com or on Instagram and Facebook @thethrivingchristianartist

When you were a kid, did adults tell you to “stop dreaming and get your head out of the clouds?”  What those adults didn’t understand is that dreaming is essential for creating art - and even more so for creating prophetic art. God releases the dreamer inside all of us, opening our eyes to possibilities that we’d never dare to imagine without him.  As Christian artists, dreaming is in our very DNA, and it is through dreams that God reveals the secrets of His Kingdom. In today’s podcast, I’m sharing an excerpt from a chapter in the brand-new 10th anniversary edition of my first book, “Unlocking the Heart of the Artist.”  It was through learning to dream with Him that God revealed His purpose for me - to raise up an army of artists to reveal His glory all over the earth.  And that revelation completely changed my life.  Dreaming allows us to access the bigger picture, to see where we fit in the glorious puzzle that God has created.  Want to hear more about the role of dreaming in our lives as artists in the Kingdom?  Check out the fully revised edition of Unlocking the Heart of the Artist on Amazon at the link below!Unlocking the Heart of the Artist: 10th Anniversary Edition on Amazon (Just Released!)https://www.amazon.com/Unlocking-Heart-Artist-Practical-Fulfilling/dp/1460930258Connect with me online:https://www.matttommeymentoring.comhttps://www.instagram.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartisthttps://www.youtube.com/mjtommey to watch the podcast on YouTube!

I’ve been involved in music my whole life. My mother was a music and choral teacher, and she had me singing in church and community groups as soon as they had a robe that would fit me. And I’ve always been grateful for that foundation in music because it’s also been such a big part of my relationship with the Lord.  Nothing allows me to get into God’s presence and feel His pleasure and love for me as worship music.  That’s why it’s such a pleasure to introduce you to Caleb Culver on the podcast today.  Caleb is a singer, songwriter, musician, and carrier of God’s presence and His Kingdom.  He is the co-writer of the Grammy-nominated song “Reckless Love” from a few years ago, and he is truly a vessel for prophetic creativity, or how we engage with the Holy Spirit in the creative process.  On today’s episode, we’re talking all about the gifts and challenges of prophetic creativity, how we see prophetic creativity produce results in our lives, and some of the things that we have to steward in that process to be able to be the creative Kingdom people that God has called us to be.You can connect with Caleb via email at cculver@radiant.church, and you can follow him online at instagram.com/calebculver and twitter.com/calebculver.===========I’ve got two new books available on Amazon - be sure to check them out in print and Kindle eBook!Prophetic Art: A Practical Guide for Creating with the Holy Spirithttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B098WHPBLS Unlocking the Heart of the Artist: A Practical Guide to Fulfilling Your Creative Call as an Artist in the Kingdomhttps://www.amazon.com/Unlocking-Heart-Artist-Practical-Fulfilling/dp/1460930258===========Connect with Matt online at matttommeymentoring.com or on Instagram and Facebook @thethrivingchristianartistYou can also watch this podcast on YouTube at youtube.com/mjtommey.  Be sure to check it out!

Artists have been using the power of art to bring people together, to express complicated emotions, and to communicate across languages and cultures for millennia.  As Thriving Christian Artists, we seek to release God’s transforming power through our own art in many different media. That’s why I am so excited about to introduce you to Jason Leith, Arts Director and Pastor at Saddleback Church in Orange County, California to share with us about Sacred Streets, a ministry that is transforming the lives of people who are often marginalized by using art to help us see what is otherwise unseen, to expose the humanity of the disenfranchised. As we say here in the Southern U.S., Jason is “our people,” and I can’t wait for you to hear his story and receive encouragement and inspiration from him, wherever you are on your journey.  I believe this podcast will heighten your awareness, expectation, and even faith for what God can begin to do in your life as you invite Him into your creative process. To learn more about Jason and Sacred Streets, visit https://sacredstreets.org/ or connect with Jason on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/jasonleithart/.To learn more about prophetic art, check out my new book on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B098WHPBLSOr The 2021 Definitive Guide to Prophetic Art & Creating with the Holy Spirit:https://www.matttommeymentoring.com/what-is-prophetic-art.htmlConnect with Matt online at matttommeymentoring.com or on Instagram and Facebook @thethrivingchristianartistYou can also watch this podcast on YouTube at youtube.com/mjtommey.  Be sure to check it out!

One of the things that’s closest to the Lord’s heart is generational impact, that the work of our hearts and hands doesn't end with us - that it will continue to the next generation.  That’s why I’m so excited to introduce you to Mary, Christine, and Caitlin, three talented artists who have created a multigenerational art business that has blessed customers, clients, and other artists for 30 years now. It’s amazing all the powerful things you can do when you co-labor with the Lord and when you simply say “Yes” to Him.  As you’ll hear, Mary said Yes to the Lord’s prompting when she started her studio 30 years ago, and that step of faith has created a legacy of creativity, support, and connection within their family and beyond.I so enjoyed my conversation with these talented artists, and I know you will, too!Learn more about Mary, Christine, and Caitlin on their website at creativebrush.com or on Facebook and Instagram @creativebrush.Connect with Matt online at matttommeymentoring.com or on Instagram and Facebook @thethrivingchristianartist

When I received my commission from the Lord back in 2009 to raise up an army of artists all over the world, one of the things that He told me I would be doing was bringing the master artists and emerging artists together to learn from and walk with each other.  That’s why I’m delighted to introduce you to my friend Scott Stearman, a master sculptor, consummate encourager, and passionate storyteller who loves to use his creative gifting to release the Light and Love of Jesus wherever he goes.Everybody talks about the power of story, but sometimes we get caught up in the idea that “story” is limited to words...when in fact, story is imbued in every piece we create.  “I want to make sure that when someone looks at my work in the future, the meaning that I intended will be clear, that I’ve told a good story.” - Scott StearmanWe are all storytellers, and our art tells a story.  What story is your art telling?   It’s definitely something to think about as you enjoy this episode!Learn more about Scott on his website at scottstearman.com.Connect with Matt online at matttommeymentoring.com or on Instagram and Facebook @thethrivingchristianartistYou can also watch this podcast on YouTube at youtube.com/mjtommey.  Be sure to check it out!

Ever heard that saying, “It is what it is?”  It’s often said in the context of something that we can’t change, something that feels too big for us to tackle.  My guest this week, Justin McRoberts, is determined to change this sentiment from “It is what it is” to “It is what you make of it.”  In this episode of The Thriving Christian Artist podcast, Justin and I talk about how when we’re tempted to throw up our hands and say “It is what it is,” what we really need to do is to throw up our hands to the Lord and say, “I feel powerless.  I need help.”  The truth is, God doesn’t care what we accomplish - He cares about who we are becoming in the process, in the shift to “It is what you make it.”  It’s the process, not the product, that really matters to Him.Be sure to check out Justin’s book, It Is What You Make Of It,” on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/What-You-Make-Creating-Something/dp/0785239804/And connect with Justin at http://justinmcroberts.com/Connect with Matt online at https://www.matttommeymentoring.com or on Instagram and Facebook @thethrivingchristianartistYou can also watch this podcast on YouTube!  Head on over to youtube.com/mjtommey to check it out!

One of the biggest misconceptions that a lot of artists carry is the idea that creativity is outside the realm of God’s Kingdom, that it’s “extra” or ancillary.  But here’s the thing:  creativity is what manifests God’s Kingdom - not the other way around.  It’s how we connect with the abundant life that Jesus designed for us, and it’s how we see the transformative power of God begin to flow in and through our lives. In today’s episode, I’m bringing this message from a recent sermon I preached at my church, New Covenant Church in western North Carolina, to help you understand how this process of prophetic creativity works!  Connect with Matt online at https://www.matttommeymentoring.com or on Instagram and Facebook @thethrivingchristianartistYou can also watch this podcast on YouTube!  Head on over to youtube.com/mjtommey to check it out!

Quite simply, prophetic art is "creating art with God."  It's this beautiful dance where, as artists, we do the thing that God has put on our hearts through our creative process. He flows through us by the power of the Holy Spirit in order to inspire us, bring fulfillment to us in our unique design, and release His transformative nature through us to touch the world around us.  Prophetic art isn’t about integrating crosses, doves, or Scripture into every piece you create.  It’s about doing the thing that you were created by God to do so that the Holy Spirit can lead and guide you in and through your creative process.  Your work becomes an act of worship.Let’s dive in a little deeper in today’s episode of 5-Minute Mentoring.Be sure to check out my free resources all about Prophetic Art on my website at www.matttommeymentoring.com/what-is-prophetic-art.htmlConnect with me online:https://www.matttommeymentoring.comInstagram and Facebook: @thethrivingchristianartistWatch this podcast on YouTube!  https://www.youtube.com/mjtommey

One of the things that I love doing as an artist and an entrepreneur is learning from people who are not artists, especially in the business realm. I've learned over the years that learning from other people's experiences and tapping into their wealth of knowledge helps give me a different perspective on what God's called me to do as an artist and as a creative. My guest today, Don Long, not only has a great understanding of how business and sales work but also of how the Kingdom of God works. In today's interview, Don and I talk about sales, relationship building, and other things that we as artists can do to begin stepping into the Kingdom Mindset that God has for us.You can connect with Don and find all of his resources online at www.DonWLong.comConnect with Matt online at www.MattTommeyMentoring.com or on Instagram and Facebook @thethrivingchristianartistGet encouraged and connect with other artists on the Thriving Christian Artist Facebook Page  https://www.facebook.com/thethrivingchristianartist/
