Simply Grateful – Ken Wetmore Thanksgiving and Jonah: it may seem like an unlikely pair. With that said, Jonah has a lot to teach us about gratitude. We often express more gratitude for the material comforts that God gives us than the relationships he has also given us. This Thanksgiving, remember to thank God for ALL the people who have been placed in your path. Our #WholeLifeReflections for this week: Make a list of the things for which you are grateful. Why are you grateful for the things you listed? If the things on your list were taken away, would you still feel gratitude to God? Take a moment to bask in the knowledge that God feels delirious joy in your life. Which of the reflections or sermon snippets resonated with you this week? Love Is…Faithful, Hopeful, and Enduring – Ken Wetmore Love never gives up. Love never loses hope. Love lasts forever. These words are even more powerful as we understand that they are God’s attitude toward us. God desires us to have the same attitude toward others. Our #WholeLifeReflections for this week: Reflection Question 1: Which aspect of love found in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 do you find most challenging. Which aspect comes the most naturally? Reflection Question 2: What’s your biggest takeaway from the “Love is” series? Love Is…All About Truth & Justice – Ken Wetmore It isn’t just Superman who put Truth and Justice together. In 1 Corinthians 13:7, Paul writes that love never rejoices about injustice but instead rejoices when the truth wins. If we are to love like Jesus, we can never be happy--or worse--apathetic when we see injustice. God’s people are to fight for truth and justice in this world, even if it may never fully come about until Jesus returns.  Our #WholeLifeReflections for this week: How much does the news impact your moods? Do you find yourself enjoying the misfortune you see there when it belongs to a person or political party with whom you disagree? Do you enjoy it when someone for whom you don’t care, like an ex, boss or antagonist, suffers misfortune? Do you think Jesus enjoys their misfortune? If you do, re-read the Gospels, and think deeply about this question as you read. What does it look like for you to rejoice with Jesus when he wins out? Love Is…Not A Grudge Holder – Ken Wetmore When Jesus told his disciples to forgive others 70 times 7, he wasn’t suggesting we keep a tally board. He was suggesting we are to forgive so much that we can’t keep track of how much we have forgiven. The happiest people are those who are able to let go of the scoreboard and hold onto God’s love.. Our #WholeLifeReflections for this week: Do you hold grudges and keep track of how you have been wronged? How often do you think about how you have been hurt by others in the past? Who has the largest “debt account” in your mind? If you aren’t sure if you hold grudges, one way of knowing is thinking about how often your response to someone else’s complaint about you is, “Yeah but you . . .” What would it look like if you eliminated the phrase, “Yeah, but you . . .”? How difficult would it be to stop rehearsing in your mind hurts from the past? How would it change your life if you did? Practice changing your thoughts from how you have been hurt to how God has loved and blessed you. Which of the reflections or sermon snippets resonated with you this week? Love Is…Not Irritable – Ken Wetmore Paul concludes 1 Corinthians 13:5 with a declaration that love is not irritable. Not being irritable is next to impossible. Irritation, however, is the seed from which bitterness and rage grow into a plant the crowds love. Our #WholeLifeReflections for this week: How willing are you to admit you are irritable? Can you think of any times you were irritable in the last week? What steps do you take to resolve irritability? Are there more steps you need to add? If irritability is an issue in your life, ask someone you love to be your accountability partner. Have them check in with you every day to see how you are feeling and how you are dealing with irritability. Love Is…Flexible – Ken Wetmore Love does not demand its own way. In other words, love is flexible. It allows others to exercise freedom. This does not mean there are no consequences. It simply means that true love is an open hand, not a closed hand. Someone once said that you can hold more sand with an open hand than with a hand made into a fist.  Our #WholeLifeReflections for this week: What is the most selfless action you have personally observed? How selfless and flexible are you in your relationships? Take a few minutes each day this week to visualize Jesus’ selflessness for you as He willingly went to the cross for you. Love Is…Not Boastful – Ken Wetmore Guy Kawasaki, venture capitalist, author, and chief evangelist for Apple, once said, “If you don't toot your own horn, don't complain that there's no music.” Self-confidence carefully mixed with humility is a good thing, but without humility, self-confidence can quickly turn into arrogance, and from there into bragging that promotes one’s self at the expense of others. No wonder Paul put bragging and arrogance in the love-killer column. Find out the path to healthy self-worth without killing love in the process. Love Is…Not Jealous – Ken Wetmore Jealousy is a love killer.  In North Carolina, an imported plant called Kudzu spreads quickly, destroys all other vegetation, and is difficult to eradicate. Jealousy is a lot like Kudzu. It quickly destroys relationships and, once introduced, is difficult to overcome. This week we’ll explore the cost of jealousy and the solution to eradicating it. #WholeLifeReflections for this week: What do you not want to share with someone else, or are you afraid of losing to someone else (jealousy)? What do you desire that belongs to someone else (envy)? How do your jealousy and envy hurt your relationship with others? with God? Ask God to help you turn over your jealousy and envy to Him. Love Is…Patient and Kind – Ken Wetmore What are you willing to suffer for another person? Patience is defined as being “ able to accept or tolerate delays, problems, or suffering without becoming annoyed or anxious.” Certainly, this is something we see displayed in Jesus' life. Today, Jesus is asking his family to be patient with family members who make life difficult. The Good News is this is a gift of the Holy Spirit for those who ask. #WholeLifeReflections for this week: With whom do you struggle to be patient in your life? Without placing the blame on the other person(s), why do you think you are impatient with them? How could you be kind to this person(s)? The Messy Middle – John Monday Instead of giving answers, God places us in complex, messy, fraught relationships and tells us, “Love and trust me as I have loved and trusted you. And love and trust each other.” It’s not for us to help God achieve his goals; it’s our job and privilege to love each other, to hold one another’s hand in the pain, the joy, the confusion... in the mess. #WholeLifeReflections for this week: What are the doctrines that are so important to you that you’d be willing to break fellowship with a Christian who disagrees? What does it mean to “Love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself? Has there ever been a time that you spoke on behalf of God? Great Question 4: Does God Cause Pain and Suffering? – Ken Wetmore Considering, the story of Hagar and Sarah:  In the Genesis version, there is a lot of difficult complexity - for instance, God sends Hagar back into bondage then tells Abraham to listen to Sarah and cast Hagar and Ishmael into the wilderness. Then, Paul does a REALLY horrible retelling of this story in Galatians. He makes a point we all like - that faith trumps the law - but he does it in a way that has resulted in much Inter-religious strife, gender oppression, etc. Why do all of these horrible things seem sanctioned by, or even motivated by, God? #WholeLifeReflections for this week: Have you ever made a decision that harmed someone else? If so, what did you do to make it right? Do you identify more with Hagar or Sarah and Abraham? Why? Has there ever been a time when you knew God "saw you?" Do you view the characters in the Bible like Abraham, Sarah, Hagar, and Paul as real people with all the character quirks and defects that we have, or as one-dimensional characters? Why would this matter? Does everything God does in the Bible have to make sense in order for you to believe that God is good? Which reflection spoke to you this week? Great Question 3: Jesus vs Denomination? – Ken Wetmore (Part 1) How do we, as a church, stay focused on Jesus when so many in our denomination believe that our mission is to fixate on major doctrinal issues, political hot potatoes, and/or cultural preferences? (Part 2) As someone not raised Seventh-day Adventist, I have embraced the warmth and freedom I have found at WholeLife church. However, I have heard that our church is different from other Adventist churches. What am I missing if this is not the norm? #WholeLifeReflections for this week: Why do you attend WholeLife? How are you furthering the mission of WholeLife? Do you view other churches as competitors or partners? When others disagree with you, is your goal to understand their point of view or to win the debate? Is there someone with whom you need to be a better listener? Great Question 2: Merit vs Grace? – Ken Wetmore It seems like our world – and even Christian organizations – give rewards on a merit-based system – what someone can or cannot accomplish. How can we, as Christians – and especially those of us who work in various organizations – offer the grace God has given us to others? #WholeLifeReflections for this week: Think about your favorite jobs and relationships. What things did they have in common that made them your favorites? Were they more grace-based or merit-based in nature? In what ways are you emphasizing merit over grace at work and at home? What are some practical steps you can take to show grace at work and at home? Which reflection spoke to you this week? Great Question 1: Man of God? – Ken Wetmore In 1 Kings 13, the “man of God” from Samaria lies to the man of God from Judah with lethal consequences. How can he be a man of God and do such terrible things?  The Bible does not shy away from differentiating between true prophets and false prophets, so it implies the lying prophet is a true prophet in relationship with God. How can his title and behavior be reconciled? How is it possible to be both a fully committed God follower and, at the same time, believe and share things that are not true? #WholeLifeReflections for this week: Have you ever been lied to by someone you believe is a good person? Is there anyone you trust so much that, should you find out they had lied or done bad things, your faith would be shaken? Are there any beliefs in your life you are just taking on someone else’s word but haven’t studied for yourself? SERIES: THIS IS US: Participation – Ken Wetmore Jesus calls for us to not merely talk about our values, but to live them - in other words, to participate. We are to participate in loving, accepting, forgiving, giving grace, studying the Bible, and worshipping. Our participation is for the purpose of falling more deeply in love with Jesus and sharing that relationship with a world that needs to know about what Jesus has already freely given. This week our #WholeLifeReflections questions have been replaced by the Matthew 25 Challenge. Open your phone's texting, and type in 56170 in the space where you would put someone’s phone number. Then, in the body of the text where the message goes, type WHOLELIFEM25 then hit send. You’ll get a response back confirming your participation and even offering a family guide to download if you would like that. Please join in with your church family in diving deep into Jesus' call to you to participate in His kingdom plan. SERIES: THIS IS US: Worship – Ken Wetmore Who you worship and how you worship are at the heart of the Bible’s message. Fighting over worship styles misses what true worship is all about. True worship is found in the truth, as it is in Jesus, and our spirits connecting with God’s Spirit. When we do this, everything else will fall into place, and we will one day find ourselves gathered around the throne of God with others from every race, nation, and language, worshipping together forever. This week our #WholeLifeTakeAways were: Do you view Sabbath as a once-a-week day to get “living water” or a celebration of the “living water” you have had flowing out of you all week long? How can you turn your daily activities into acts of worship? Is there any part of your life you don’t think can be an act of worship? Can it be redeemed, or is it something that needs to be removed? The religious leaders in Jesus’ day proved it was possible to have the Scriptures completely memorized but miss the point. SERIES: THIS IS US: Grace – Ken Wetmore They say you can’t choose your family, but that isn’t the case. Adoption is one of the most beautiful and loving acts because the one doing the adopting is choosing a specific person to be a part of their family. God has adopted us. We are a part of God’s family. We have all the rights and privileges that come with that adoption. We have done nothing to deserve it. That is grace. This week our #WholeLifeTakeAways were: When have you experienced grace (unmerited favor) from another human being? From God? Right now, are you the younger brother, the older brother, or a combination in the story of the lost sons/prodigal son. Think of the difficult times you have gone through in life. SERIES:  THIS IS US:  Forgiveness – Ken Wetmore Defining forgiveness is not as simple as Googling the definition. Truly understanding and practicing forgiveness is layered, complex, multi-faceted, and often counterintuitive. It is anything but easy. In spite of this, in multiple places in the Gospel Jesus sets forgiveness of our fellow human beings as a condition for receiving the forgiveness of God. The Lord’s Prayer holds the key to this seemingly impossible mandate from Jesus.   This week our #WholeLifeTakeAways were:  Think about a person you forgave. What emotions did you experience when you forgave them? What helped you forgive them? Is there anyone you need to forgive? Where are you on your journey to forgiveness? Is there anyone you need to ask to forgive you? Could you ask them what reparations you could make to them for what you did? How much have you been forgiven for in your life? A Presbyterian minister, Mister Rogers took his cues about acceptance from Jesus. Jesus is the original champion of radical acceptance. Acceptance is not the endpoint of a relationship. SERIES:  This Is US Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of Blacks enslaved unjustly in the United States. On this day, it is right to reflect on God’s core value: love. The Bible is so adamant about the centrality of love that John does not write that it is one of many attributes of God, but instead writes “God is love.” God showed what love is when he became one of us, lived with us, and then died in our place. His invitation to us is to join him in selfless love that gives freedom to the oppressed, marginalized, and enslaved. SERIES:  THIS IS US - ’I Am Ken Wetmore…We Are WholeLife Church’ –  Ken Wetmore  Where I (Ken Wetmore) grew up in North Carolina, the quickest way to get to know someone was to find out who their parents were. That’s because every family has values. Anyone who knows the family has a pretty good idea of what they can expect from members of that family. In John 14:9, Jesus tells his disciples that, if they know him, they know the Father. ‘Eyes Of Empathy’ – by Jeff Cinquemani   Nicodemus, the Samaritan woman at the well, and the man who sat paralyzed by a superstitious pool—each time Jesus looks into their questions and poses another question that digs deep into the real issue. As a way of showing us to look beyond the surface, Jesus teaches us to see a new perspective, perhaps to find a better understanding. He asks us to empathize, and there is no better example of Jesus' empathy than in Matthew 19. Here he creates a new view of what it might look like if his disciples looked at life from a different set of eyes—eyes of empathy.   Our #WholeLifeTakeAways for this week:   When you think about someone who you've been able to confide in or someone with whom you've felt safe, what was it about them that made you feel that way?   If you think of empathy as having the ability to observe someone and put yourself in their shoes while attempting to seek understanding, what would you say are hindrances to making that a value in your own life?   Oftentimes, empathy is confused with tolerance, leniency, and maybe excusing wrongdoing. How was Jesus able to carry out empathy and the behaviors that followed afterward, knowing that the religious leaders would certainly call him into question?   Jesus seems to express empathy many more times than simply calling out the selfishness of those who were in the wrong and acting out injustice. Some might say this is non-confrontational, while others might say it's seeing the deeper faults on both sides. How do we put Jesus in our own “box” to excuse our lack of empathy?   Which one of these takeaways resonated with you most? Please let us know why be reaching to us using one of the following:   ■ Text/Voicemail:  407-965-1607 ■ Email:  podcast@wholelife.church ■ WLC Mobile App:  Media Tab/Podcast Banner and Use Text and Email links ■ Social Media:  #WholeLifePodcast/ #WholeLifeTakeAways   JOIN US LIVE FOR ‘THE LOOP’! Transitions: Navigating Change – ‘Belief In An Unchanging God’ – by David Banks   Transitions are a part of life. Whether positive or negative, change is constant in the human experience. Is this also true for spiritual beliefs? Have your beliefs changed throughout your life? How has your understanding of God and your patterns of observance changed over the past 5, 10, even 50 years? In Hebrews, we are told that we serve an “unchanging” God who is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Paul also provides counsel that believers will need to “mature” their faith and build upon a strong “foundation.” How do we best reconcile an unchanging God with a human experience that is constantly changing?   There were no #WholeLifeTakeAways for this week but we would love to hear any questions or feedback that you have regarding this episode. Please let us know by using one of the following:   ■ Text/Voicemail:  407-965-1607 ■ Email:  podcast@wholelife.church ■ WLC Mobile App:  Media Tab/Podcast Banner and Use Text and Email links ■ Social Media:  #WholeLifePodcast/ #WholeLifeTakeAways   JOIN US LIVE FOR ‘THE LOOP’! Every Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. EST our interactive worship service goes live to the internet to engage with you! Ask questions, submit videos or ideas so that we can all grow closer as a community of believers. You can attend in person or online at http://www.WholeLife.Church/LIVE (www.WholeLife.Church/LIVE). Please login to the ‘chatroll’ chat feature so we can meet you personally and take your thoughts and questions!   Thank you for listening!  If you’ve enjoyed this episode, please share it on social media.  Our show is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, and everywhere you can listen to podcasts!    NEXT WEEK: ‘Eyes of Empathy’ by Jeff Cinquemani.      The theme music for Speaking of Grace was written, produced, and performed by WholeLife Church’s own Phillip Burks - https://www.phillipburks.com/ (https://www.phillipburks.com/).   Download the WholeLife Church Mobile App! It is available for both Apple and Android.   Say hello on Twitter: https://twitter.com/wholelifeorl (https://twitter.com/wholelifeorl), Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/wholelifeorlando (https://www.facebook.com/wholelifeorlando), and Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wholelifeorlando (https://www.instagram.com/wholelifeorlando)!  Use the #hashtags:  #WholeLifePodcast #WholeLifeTakeaways #ThisIsWholeLife #NavigatingChange

Transitions: Navigating Change – ‘The Winding Path’ – by Chad Hess   What does it look like to follow God’s calling for your life? God’s plan is not a straight journey to a destination. There are always twists and turns, brought about by change. These changes can be painful and difficult, but they make us into who we are and the person that God wants us to be. Following Jesus Beyond the Cross – ‘The Follower’ In their hearts, Jesus' disciples struggled to fill something, to prove something, and to make something of themselves (just like us today), but the whole time he was there with them, all he wanted was for them to follow—just follow. How could this change Jesus' followers today?  This week’s #WholeLifeTakeAways:  When was the last time you were moving in a particular direction or on your "proverbial way" and your trip was interrupted by someone or something that started to change your mind, or maybe even your direction? How did you respond? What were important things to consider at that moment?  Jesus has a way of helping us see him in the daily routines of life. In what ways could we make that more evident? How might we see it more fully and possibly increase the frequency of those moments? Jesus is the Leader; we are his followers. The one thing that he says about followers is that others will know we are his followers by the love we show to others. What tactics, sentiments, or behaviors might keep other would-be Christians from being followers? The fullness of the Gospel was never meant to be proprietary and only a "Jewish thing.” As "ethnos" (anyone other than Jews), we are part of God's plan and "added in" to receive God’s grace, forgiveness, and acceptance. It would seem strange, then, that we would become the "inviters," yet God does allow us that privilege - not to judge or "gatekeep," but invite. When you think about people in your life, who would be easy to invite, and who would be harder? Why?   Which of these takeaways resonate with you most? NEXT WEEK: REPEAT of Following Jesus Beyond the Cross – ‘The Follower’, by Jeff Cinquemani and Service (No IN-PERSON services due to Church Retreat at Camp Kulaqua).   The theme music for Speaking of Grace was written, produced, and performed by WholeLife Church’s own Phillip Burks - https://www.phillipburks.com/ (https://www.phillipburks.com/).   Download the WholeLife Church Mobile App! It is available for both Apple and Android.   Say hello on Twitter: https://twitter.com/wholelifeorl (https://twitter.com/wholelifeorl), Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/wholelifeorlando (https://www.facebook.com/wholelifeorlando), and Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wholelifeorlando (https://www.instagram.com/wholelifeorlando)!  Use the #hashtags:  #WholeLifePodcast #WholeLifeTakeaways #ThisIsWholeLife #FollowingJesusBeyondTheCross

Following Jesus Beyond the Cross – ‘The Leader’ When Peter followed Jesus out of the boat to walk on the water, it seemed like an incredible feat to do what Jesus did. But the thought was there, “If he can do it, why can’t I?” until he realized it was God all along. The Leader is not just our teacher, though his words are incredibly thought provoking. The Leader is not just our friend, but he’s forever on our side. The Leader is God, and that means we follow him because, if we follow anything else, we have made ourselves out to be God. And that goes nowhere.  This week’s #WholeLifeTakeAways:  When you think about following a teacher or someone who might be a leader to you in whatever role that might be, what criteria goes through your mind as to the type of leader for whom you are looking? Who were people in your life that shared generously with you, and how did that change the way you shared with others? When you think about good spiritual food for you, what things come to your mind? Jesus asks us to follow; however, following is about discipleship, and discipleship is about replicating. How does that fit with your view of following? Following Jesus Beyond the Cross – ‘The Destination’ He is risen and is our ‘destination’. This week’s #WholeLifeTakeAways:  We very rarely look at being a "follower" as being a positive position. What do you think are some of your own personal resistances to this request of Jesus to "Follow Me?" Consider the question above and how the disciples just left their current lives to follow Jesus. If you were to imagine yourself in that time, what would have been your greatest motivation for dropping everything and following this man of whom you'd only heard? As you think about Christ knowing everything about you, what makes it so comfortable for you to hang onto that thought? What do you keep discovering about God the more you know he sees your heart? When you think about Jesus not being the conductor to our destination but truly being the destination, what thoughts come to mind? Things To Remember – ‘There’s A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow’ There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow. This isn't just optimistic thinking; it is the promised reality of God. However, before we step into the ultimate one at the end of earth’s history, maybe one between now and then would be God’s friends finding unity on three platforms: Jesus is the Savior, God calls us to love, and There’s a glorious future. Even between now and that final day, God is in charge, and there are many great big beautiful tomorrows in our future. This week’s #WholeLifeTakeAways:  Why do you think it is important to remember these four points? 1. Fix your eyes on Jesus Hebrews 12:2 2. Trust the gospel 2 Corinthians 5:19 3. Love each other and everybody else too 1 Corinthans 13:6-8  4. There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow Phil 1:6, Rev 21:1-4 How easy is it for you to get stuck on what has been? Who in your life has helped you look positively at the future? How does remembering 1-3 above make #4 easier? When bad times come, which they always do, how can you keep believing “there’s a great big beautiful tomorrow”? How much do you trust Philippians 1:6 that God who began a good work in you will bring it to completion? In what ways does the reality that “nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God,” (Rom 8:39) make every day a great big beautiful day even when circumstances are bad? Things To Remember – ‘Love Each Other and Everybody Else It is our mission to love people—to love people so well that in, and through, and because of God’s love being exercised through us, the people we love will be drawn into a lifelong friendship with God, and they too will start loving people. Religious organizations like denominations will codify, policy-make, and set rules to follow. Honor those that promote true loving of people, and tolerate those that don’t block loving. However, because God has called you to love, seek to overthrow those that block us from God’s call on our lives to love people. This week’s #WholeLifeTakeAways:  How easy or hard is it for you to love the people who you’d identify as “your people”? Who is the hardest person for you to think about loving? How hard will it be for you to remember to love each other and everybody else? What do you think about each of the descriptors of love from 1 Corinthians 13?    “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” What do you think about the definition of love being “readiness to serve”? How can you take advantage of practicing loving people different from you who are part of WholeLife Church? On the back of this sheet are 13 principles to guide how we treat each other. How can you make these parts of your practice? How will you work on loving with no barriers?   Which of these take-aways resonated with you this week? We would love to hear you feedback and you can reach us at any of the methods below:   ■ Text/Voicemail:  407-965-1607 ■ Email:  podcast@wholelife.church ■ WLC Mobile App:  Media Tab/Podcast Banner and Use Text and Email links ■ Social Media:  #WholeLifePodcast/ #WholeLifeTakeAways   AS MENTIONED IN THIS WEEK’S MESSAGE….   PRINCIPLES FOR HOW WE TREAT EACH OTHER Our Practice of Respect and Community Building 1. Create a hospitable and accountable community. We all arrive in isolation and need the generosity of friendly welcomes. Bring all of yourself to the work in this community. Welcome others to this place and this work and presume that you are welcomed as well. Hospitality is the essence of restoring community. 2. Listen deeply. Listen intently to what is said, listen to the feelings beneath the words. Strive to achieve a balance between listening and reflecting, speaking and acting.  3. Create an advice-free zone. Replace advice with curiosity as we work together for peace and justice. Each of us is here to discover our own truths. We are not here to set someone else straight, to “fix” what we perceive as broken in another member of the group. 4. Practice asking honest and open questions. A great question is ambiguous, personal and provokes anxiety. 5. Give space for unpopular answers. Answer questions honestly even if the answer seems unpopular. Be present to listen not debate, correct or interpret. 6. Respect silence. Silence is a rare gift in our busy world. After someone has spoken, take time to reflect without immediately filling the space with words. This applies to the speaker, as well – be comfortable leaving your words to resound in the silence, without refining or elaborating on what you have said. 7. Suspend judgment. Set aside your judgments. By creating a space between judgments and reactions, we can listen to the other, and to ourselves, more fully. 8. Identify assumptions. Our assumptions are usually invisible to us, yet they undergird our worldview. By identifying our assumptions, we can then set them aside and open our viewpoints to greater possibilities.   9. Speak your truth. You are invited

Things To Remember – ‘Trust The Gospel’          The gospel teaches us that salvation is always the work of the Savior, not the saved. Anything added to the good news of the Gospel of Jesus turns it into bad news. Remember to trust the gospel—it is God’s work, work done by the Divine, and it can be trusted.   This week’s #WholeLifeTakeAways:   How have you practiced “fixing your eyes on Jesus” this week If someone asked you to define the “gospel” what would you say? Since the word “gospel” means good news what is the absolute good news? By placing responsibility for the gospel on us how does that change what should be good news into bad news? What are some ways the church might be guilty of turning good news into bad news? How is believing more of a result of Jesus’s work of reconciliation than the cause of that reconciling? What do you think about this statement? “if my doing is how I get the gospel then, even though it is a small performance of mine, my salvation ends up being at least partially my doing not Christ’s. This thinking robs Jesus of his glory.” When would the work of saving be the work of the saved instead of the work of the savior? How good is it that God no longer counting our sins against us? We, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled by others and We became slaves      to many wicked desires and evil pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy. We hated others and they hated us.   GOD’S PART:   But then . . . God our Savior showed us his kindness and love. He saved us,     not because of the good things we did,     but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins and He gave us a new life through the Holy Spirit. He generously poured out the Spirit upon us      because of what Jesus Christ our Savior did. Things To Remember – ‘Fix Your Eyes On Jesus’             What is your first line of defense? When you face good times or bad – When your relational world is stable or messed up – When you are the epitome of health or can’t get well – When the bills are all paid and there’s extra or when none are paid. Do you turn to your own mind for answers? Do you seek diversion? Is there a trusted friend you call? Only one person is worthy of our focus, and when we focus there, all will be well with our souls. There are a million other lines of defense and options of where to look, but especially when times are rough—fix your eyes on Jesus.  This week’s #WholeLifeTakeAways:   What is your biggest temptation to multi-task to try and do two things at once? List the top five things that demand your attention? How hard was it to juggle classes in school? In what ways does aiming for perfection rather than progress hamper your Christian pilgrimage? How can you tell you’ve bought in to being on a pilgrimage to be transformed into Christ’s image &that the journey is important? What do you think about this race being more of a “fun run” than a race because Jesus has already won the race and has enough gold medals for each participant? What would be one of your greatest distractions to pull you away from fixing your eyes on Jesus? What can you do to lodge more of his teaching in your brain? How can you begin to see all people you can serve as a way of focusing on Jesus, fixing your eyes on the “least of these”? Jesus Doesn’t Make It Easy – ‘Stored Treasure’  We all have treasures we store. Where do you store yours?   This week’s #WholeLifeTakeAways:  What do you think about this series “Jesus Doesn’t Make Life Easy”? How did today’s message affect your thinking about storing up some treasure for a rainy day? What is something you rightfully treasure that could compete with treasuring God? How can you practice not treasuring earthly but instead treasuring the heavenly? How easy is it for you to engage with Jesus’ re-working what we may think of as a rule to a larger principle to follow? Jesus Doesn’t Make It Easy – ‘Proper Payback’  You punch me, so I punch you back. In the Bible, it’s called the lex talionis or the law of retaliation. Of course, one of the problems is that, if you punch me, I don’t want to just punch you back; I want to punch you back just a bit harder than you punched me. Rather than revenge, how do we move to reconciliation? Jesus' teaching about proper payback was meant to stretch us. This week’s #WholeLifeTakeAways:  What do you think about the Lex Talionis – an eye for an eye, etc? How could that law make things better or make things worse? Who have you wanted to “get back” with retaliation or revenge? What kind of insult is the most difficult to let go of for you? How easy is it for you to insult back? How guarded are you about making sure you get your rights? Which of your rights seems to be in the most danger of losing? When has someone gone the extra mile for you? How did that feel?   How is being less than generous with the need a way of revenge or retaliation? Which is hardest for you: insults, rights, extra mile, giving? What are steps you plan to take to let Christ take over your life more so yours is a not I but Christ life?  Which of these takeaways resonated with you this week? We would love to hear you feedback and you can reach us at any of the methods below: ■ Text/Voicemail:  407-965-1607 ■ Email:  podcast@wholelife.church ■ WLC Mobile App:  Media Tab/Podcast Banner and Use Text and Email links ■ Social Media:  #WholeLifePodcast/ #WholeLifeTakeAways Listen and subscribe to :15 With Andy, Randy, & Jeff by going to our website: https://wholelife.church/podcast (https://wholelife.church/podcast)! You can listen, subscribe, and share the episode, all from our podcast player or wherever you listen to podcasts! Jesus Doesn’t Make It Easy – ‘Easy Adultery’       Adultery has become part of our entertainment. Modern media has hardened us to the pain of adultery for all parties involved; however, we’ve not spent much time on heart adultery. What will it mean to guard our hearts and minds against objectifying and marginalizing others? Jesus’ imagery is pretty drastic when he says we’d be better off with our eye gouged out than for our eye to lead us down adulterous paths. How do we guide our thoughts to keep clear of easy adultery? This week’s #WholeLifeTakeAways:  What do you imagine Jesus might have been teaching that would give the listeners the idea that he was abolishing the law? How convinced do you think the crowd was when Jesus said he didn’t come to destroy but to fulfill the law and it wasn’t changing? What do you think the people expected to follow when Jesus said, “You have heard…Do not commit adultery…but I say? How have you thought about the “lustful look” as compared to what you heard today regarding “greedy sexual idolatry”?    What are some of the ways you see sexual greed being idolatrous today-how is it usurping God’s place? What is the relationship of today’s topic and husbands and wives who expect their spouse to provide for them what must come from God alone? What do you think about the four ways greedy sexual idolatry evidences itself- pornography, using sex selfishly, unable to be whole without it, expecting a fairytale to make you happy?’ What safeguards are you going use to guard your heart? Jesus Doesn’t Make It Easy – ‘Acceptable Murder’         When we think of murder strictly in the realm of physically taking another’s life, it's never acceptable! However, Jesus expands the concept to being out of sync with someone—being angry, calling them an idiot, or cursing someone. How can we be reconciled when another doesn’t want to be? This week’s #WholeLifeTakeAways:  What do you think about taking only 87 verses into the Bible to have the first murder? Why do you think Cain might have felt it was justifiable homicide? What do you like and dislike by defining “murder” as the shedding of innocent blood in time of peace? For Jesus’ listeners, the law was sort of ultimate, you didn’t mess with the law. What for you would be the equivalent of the law? What tradition, what practice, what philosophy, etc.?    What do you think about the three things Jesus equates with murder with even greater consequences: anger, speaking with a tone of contempt for others, and disparaging another’s reputation to the point of killing their good name? Why do you think Jesus puts the worst punishment on calling a person a fool or killing their reputation? How easy is it to damage another person’s reputation today? What would be solved if we were quick to listen, slow to speak (text, tweet, email, or post), and slow to get angry? When you were 10, what did you want to do when you grew up? How did that work out? Any vestiges of that original dream? Stewarding the Gospel…of Reconciliation             Sin separated us from God. God is the source of all life, so sin separated us from life. God is love, so sin separated us from love. We cannot be the answer to our problem. Quite apart from any action on our part, God’s action by Jesus, through Jesus, and because of Jesus brings us back into oneness and invites us to join in helping people see what God has done for them.    This week’s #WholeLifeTakeAways:    What might be some realistic & unrealistic dreams for marriage? Who has what you think of as a great marriage? What do you think about Florida’s “no-fault” divorce option? When have you been unreconciled with someone and how did it feel?    How, if it worked out, did you reconcile? What do you think about the idea that “Everything God is we naturally aren’t? What does it mean to be reconciled to God? Who does the reconciling? How does it change your “witnessing” when you believe that everyone has been reconciled? How fun could it be to let prisoners know the cells are unlocked and the doors gone…to tell tired warriors the war is over? Stewarding the Gospel…of Equality   When we steward well the gospel, we recognize that it calls us to a radical oneness, a radical equality. We are called to give up the pride of separation and see that we are all equal in two amazing ways: all distinctions of prideful hierarchy are leveled in both the condition of being lost and being found.    This week’s #WholeLifeTakeAways:    What experience made you feel that you weren’t equal? How hard is it for you to align with our Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal? It is hard to believe that it’s only been just over 100 years that women have been able to vote. What are some sore spots of inequality still today? How have you engaged with children to help them feel equal? What do you think about Jesus saying to the Canaanite woman, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to their dogs?” How broad is your concept of equality? Can you freely sing “When we ALL get to heaven,” or is it easier to sing “some of us get to heaven?” How comfortable are you with Paul’s declaration that on one is righteous…all have turned away? How will our equality of being sinners with everyone change how we look at others?   Which of these take-aways resonated with you this week? Thank you for listening!  If you’ve enjoyed this episode, please share it on social media.  Our show is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, and everywhere you can listen to podcasts!    NEXT WEEK: Stewarding The Gospel…of ‘Reconciliation’ by Andy McDonald.   The theme music for Speaking of Grace was written, produced, and performed by WholeLife Church’s own Phillip Burks - https://www.phillipburks.com/ (https://www.phillipburks.com/).   Download the WholeLife Church Mobile App! It is available for both Apple and Android.   Say hello on Twitter: https://twitter.com/wholelifeorl (https://twitter.com/wholelifeorl), Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/wholelifeorlando (https://www.facebook.com/wholelifeorlando), and Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wholelifeorlando (https://www.instagram.com/wholelifeorlando)!  Use the #hashtags:  #WholeLifePodcast #WholeLifeTakeaways #ThisIsWholeLife #StewardingTheGospel

Stewarding the Gospel…of Others First   God’s free amazing grace to each of us calls us to a new way. Solving the sin problem is Jesus leaving the comfort of the adoring angels and the forever unity of the Trinity and putting others first. The gospel is the perfect picture of self-donation, and when Jesus’ followers follow best, that picture of self-donation recurs in good stewarding of the gospel.   This week’s #WholeLifeTakeAways:    If you look back on your life, who was someone you looked up to and sought to be like, or maybe even pretended to be? What was it about that experience that was good for you to go through, but also grow out of? When we listen to others with more than just a quiet ear, when we really pay attention to what is "behind the words" so to speak, what does that not only do for them, but also do for us? Knowing that understanding is critical, at what point, if ever, might it be helpful to share our own journey or opinions about theirs? If discipleship, the way Jesus did it, was all about being a servant, how do you see the disciples replicating that style of leadership in the New Testament that tell about their ministry? If we realize that our lives are a beautiful journey with one definite purpose (to live in God's command to love), how will you seek to find ways to make other people's lives better? It's really an adventure of discovery every single day, so what might be the first step?     Which of these takeaways resonated with you this week? We would love to hear your feedback and you can reach us at any of the methods below:   ■ Text/Voicemail:  407-965-1607 ■ Email:  podcast@wholelife.church ■ WLC Mobile App:  Media Tab/Podcast Banner and Use Text and Email links ■ Social Media:  #WholeLifePodcast/ #WholeLifeTakeAways   Listen and subscribe to :15 With Andy, Randy, & Jeff by going to our website: https://wholelife.church/podcast (https://wholelife.church/podcast)! You can listen, subscribe, and share the episode, all from our podcast player or wherever you listen to podcasts!   Thank you for listening!  If you’ve enjoyed this episode, please share it on social media.  Our show is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, and everywhere you can listen to podcasts!    NEXT WEEK: Stewarding The Gospel…of ‘Equality’ by Andy McDonald.   The theme music for Speaking of Grace was written, produced, and performed by WholeLife Church’s own Phillip Burks - https://www.phillipburks.com/ (https://www.phillipburks.com/).   Download the WholeLife Church Mobile App! It is available for both Apple and Android.   Say hello on Twitter: https://twitter.com/wholelifeorl (https://twitter.com/wholelifeorl), Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/wholelifeorlando (https://www.facebook.com/wholelifeorlando), and Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wholelifeorlando (https://www.instagram.com/wholelifeorlando)!  Use the #hashtags:  #WholeLifePodcast #WholeLifeTakeaways #ThisIsWholeLife #StewardingTheGospel

Stewarding the Gospel…of Unfairness   If I run a good race, if I keep the faith, if I obey the law, it seems to be fair that there’s a crown of righteousness and glorious future awaiting me. But how can it be fair for God to do it all, and I just benefit? How can it be right that everyone gets a gift? Who really wants to be treated fairly?   This week’s #WholeLifeTakeAways:   When was a time you screamed the loudest, “That’s not fair”? Why do you think it is that we are concerned about fairness? When you think about fairness is it about everybody getting the same, or each getting what they deserve, or how is your concept of fairness related to a level playing field? What do you think about Jesus parable of paying all the workers what they agreed to or more? How is that fair? As a spiritual person how do you stay in touch with the reality of not deserving God’s grace? If God’s grace saves while we are dead in sin how much of our being “saved” is our doing? How do you feel about being God’s workmanship so that any resemblance of a masterpiece is the master’s work not ours? Who is it “fair” for God to offer his grace to and to whom is it “not fair” to have grace offered to them?   Which of these take-aways resonated with you this week? Thank you for listening!  If you’ve enjoyed this episode, please share it on social media.  Our show is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, and everywhere you can listen to podcasts!    NEXT WEEK: Stewarding The Gospel…of Others First’ by Jeff Cinquemani.   The theme music for Speaking of Grace was written, produced, and performed by WholeLife Church’s own Phillip Burks - https://www.phillipburks.com/ (https://www.phillipburks.com/).   Download the WholeLife Church Mobile App! It is available for both Apple and Android.   Say hello on Twitter: https://twitter.com/wholelifeorl (https://twitter.com/wholelifeorl), Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/wholelifeorlando (https://www.facebook.com/wholelifeorlando), and Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wholelifeorlando (https://www.instagram.com/wholelifeorlando)!  Use the #hashtags:  #WholeLifePodcast #WholeLifeTakeaways #ThisIsWholeLife #StewardingTheGospel

Stewarding the Gospel...of Worthiness   You are worthy of God’s love. You cannot hear this clearly enough or often enough, and you will never understand the depth of this great truth. When we look soberly at ourselves, we might be inclined to believe that we are not worthy. However, we are worthy, not because we deserve the love of God, but because he has declared it so.     This week’s #WholeLifeTakeAways:    If we are worthy by no effort of our own, why are there so many verses telling us how to behave, how to act, how to be righteous? Is God’s love really for everyone or just for some? If only for some, what makes them special? As we embrace our own acceptance from God, it helps us to accept others. As we accept others, should we try to teach them about godly living or rely on God to take care of the rest? Thank you for listening!  If you’ve enjoyed this episode, please share it on social media.  Our show is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, and everywhere you can listen to podcasts!    NEXT WEEK: 'Stewarding The Gospel…of Unfairness’ by Andy McDonald.   The theme music for Speaking of Grace was written, produced, and performed by WholeLife Church’s own Phillip Burks - https://www.phillipburks.com/ (https://www.phillipburks.com/).   Download the WholeLife Church Mobile App! It is available for both Apple and Android.   Say hello on Twitter: https://twitter.com/wholelifeorl (https://twitter.com/wholelifeorl), Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/wholelifeorlando (https://www.facebook.com/wholelifeorlando), and Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wholelifeorlando (https://www.instagram.com/wholelifeorlando)!  Use the #hashtags:  #WholeLifePodcast #WholeLifeTakeaways #ThisIsWholeLife #StewardingTheGospel

Expecting the Unexpected: An Unexpected Life   Our world is not as God had intended, and while we’re here, we can separate ourselves from our community and live a safe and secluded life – not allowing the “unholiness” of the world to invade. Mary and Joseph made a home in Egypt, which during that time required both giving to and receiving from a community. How can we engage, connect, and bring unexpected kingdom life to our world?   There were no #WholeLifeTakeAways for this message. As always, we would still love to hear you feedback and you can reach us at any of the methods below:   ■ Text/Voicemail:  407-965-1607 ■ Email:  podcast@wholelife.church ■ WLC Mobile App:  Media Tab/Podcast Banner and Use Text and Email links ■ Social Media:  #WholeLifePodcast/ #WholeLifeTakeAways   Listen and subscribe to :15 With Andy, Randy, & Jeff by going to our website: https://wholelife.church/podcast (https://wholelife.church/podcast)! NEXT WEEK: New Series - ‘Stewardship of The Gospel’ – Stewardship of Worthiness by John Monday.   The theme music for Speaking of Grace was written, produced, and performed by WholeLife Church’s own Phillip Burks - https://www.phillipburks.com/ (https://www.phillipburks.com/).   Download the WholeLife Church Mobile App! It is available for both Apple and Android.   Say hello on Twitter: https://twitter.com/wholelifeorl (https://twitter.com/wholelifeorl), Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/wholelifeorlando (https://www.facebook.com/wholelifeorlando), and Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wholelifeorlando (https://www.instagram.com/wholelifeorlando)!  Use the #hashtags:  #WholeLifePodcast #WholeLifeTakeaways #ThisIsWholeLife #ExpectTheUnExpected
