The Board Boys Podcast
The Board Boys Podcast
We play board games. We hope you like board games. New episodes every other Thursday.
Your favorite boys are back coming to you once again from quarantine. The unexpected remote recording could've ruined spirits had it not been for the wonderful discussion on Trickerion: Legends of Illusion. There were tricks to learn, materials to prep and illusions to perform but only one board boy could come away as the true heir of Dahlgaard. Also this episode: Josh plays a new dexterity game - spoiler, it is terrible and Rob shares the news about our latest sponsor!
Your favorite boys are back with an all new episode tackling one of Board Boy Rob's all-time favorite games, Cosmic Encounter. There are a lot of stories about this game in the Board Boy's lore - does it live up to the hype? Is this game simply a nostalgic experience or does it deserve to be in the BGG Top 150?!? Also this episode, Cabin Con 2020. In lieu of all game conventions getting canceled this year, the boys threw their own micro-con filled with lots of games and lots of hand sanitizer.
Your boys are back to tackle the cutthroat world of ... *checks show notes* starting their own art galleries? Discovering new artists, buying and selling internationally and building your reputation around the art community are all viable paths to glory in The Gallerist by Vital Lacerda from Eagle-Gryphon Games. Also this episode: Ben is back and played the crappiest dexterity game ever invented; Rob doesn't get art BUT says art a lot; Cam Kazoos to his heart's content; and Josh hopes you like board games.
The boys are back and hatching, cracking and showcasing all the dinosaurs your heart could ever desire in Dinosaur Island from Pandasaurus Games. A lot of folks have described this game as "Jurassic Park the eurogame" but is there more to this engine building, 90s-themed game than meets the eye? Also this episode: Josh gives the best advice for your next app download; Rob and Josh clash on the controversial hill "Wingspan, overrated or no?"; and Cam gets to (maybe) play kazoo that tune.
Your favorite boys are back with another episode, sailing around the Caribbean in the latest Alexander Pfister hit, Maracaibo. Whether upgrading your ship, exploring South America, fighting naval battles, or vying for favor among multiple countries, Maracaibo is a point salad, eurogamers dream. Also this episode: "Wombo vs. Wobble" - the pillars of Cam gaming; Rob explores the Mandela effect; Josh actually played some games; and the boys debate common board game themes. We hope you like board games!
Your favorite boys are back together again and it feels so, so ... well, still kinda bizarre actually. To celebrate the occasion, the boys kicked off a new season with Delicious Games's Underwater Cities. Can Josh finally approach a game he hates with a fresh perspective? Will Rob talk about kid's games? Does Cam make it 12 minutes without singing "Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?" And where in the world is Ben? All this and more in TBBP season opener. We hope you like board games ... and kazoos.

Josh is still digging his new place, but will he also bury treasure? Rob has to wrangle a bunch of fools and overcome some technical challenges and will Cam come to terms with what he did to Lil Gertie? Come find out in this weeks episode!
Your favorite boys are back for another episode from quarantine. This week the boys dust off the classic worker placement game, Stone Age. This game is known for being really good and coming with a really stinky dice cup. Also, this episode: Josh finally gets a house, Ben comes up with arguably his greatest intro name (though it takes a few tries), Campbell becomes the unofficial spokesperson for Tabletop Simulator, and Rob gives an update on his Kallax Cube challenge. We hope you like board games!
This week on the Quarantine (Board) Boys the dudes sit down for an interview with Tony Gullotti, U.S. Marketing Director for Czech Games Edition. Besides answering our hard-hitting questions, Tony shares news on upcoming CGE titles, apps and online gaming, and how the team continues to operate during a global pandemic. Is there a Dungeon Lords app finally coming to your phones? Is Vlaada Chvatil working on a new big-box game? Did Board Boy Rob get a new puppy? All this and more in this week's episode.
This week on the Board (Quarantine) Boys Podcast we dip into a game for the ages and you might also say it is Through the Ages because that is it's title! Also on this episode Cam does some farming online, Josh is still trying to move and asks you to send a postcard, Ben is still feeling burned, and Rob is playing through a cube of Czech Games!
We never would've guessed years ago that we'd be wrapping up the fifth season of TBBP or that we'd be recording from our homes in quarantine but here we are. The boys went out with a *bang* playing the controversial eurogame, Caylus. There are lots of opinions on one of the first worker placement games ever and we have some of them. Also this episode gaming from quarantine - Apps to play, platforms to use and social gaming from a distance! Stay safe and wash your hands. We hope you like board games.
In this episode, we go retro with a double feature from Restoration Games. Join us as we cooperatively catch those thieves in Stop Thief! and then go head to head (to head) in some racing and betting action in Downforce. Also, come find out how much Campbell likes Carmen Sandiego and Rockapella. Did Rob really play Monopoly? Why would he do that?! Also, Rob's wife Amy joins to try to describe that game she played that one time but can't remember because they own too many. We hope you like board games!
We play Feast for Odin from ZMan Games in this episode - Come check out a bad poetry reading by Campbell from an old norse poet, Ben brings the taste with some Oreo's from Oreo day, Josh is still trying to move instead of play Boardgames, and Rob revisits some games played at Gamicon in Cedar Rapids.
This week we travel back to another Rob pick that closely mirrors his first pick of the podcast as a host - Tzolkin. Both share a designer, a mechanism, and similar themes. Also check out what we have been playing lately and has Josh moved yet?
What do you get when you mix an incredible designer with two incredibly popular games? You get a Board Boys blowout episode all about Wolfgang Warsch and his hit games The Quacks of Quedlinburg and The Taverns of Tiefenthal. If only there was something that could make this blowout episode even better ... oh wait, we're also joined this episode by our homie Keeghan to talk all about what to expect at Gamicon 2020. We hope you like board games!
Board Boys Cam and Josh recently headed to Nebraska City, NE for ATBCon2020. The con was a blast and provided a unique opportunity for the boys to preview the upcoming KS game, For Glory. The two-player deck builder pits rival gladiator schools against each other - providing unique decisions as players build up their schools; their reputation; and their gladiators before ultimately sending them to battle. We don't normally preview KS games but For Glory was too good to not discuss. Look for it on Feb 4th!
This week the boys revisit the first game they ever played for the podcast BUT this time they're in outer space in Gaia Project! A lot of folks refer to this game as Terra Mystica 2.0. Is that fair or is there more to it than that? Also, this episode: kazoos ... so many kazoos; Campbell pulls a Campbell; Rob shares a story of recent heroism and Josh's dogs require assistance. We hope you like board games.

Come gather round now children and listen to a tale of camaraderie, revelry, and perhaps a little bad weather travel to a wonderous gathering called Gamicon. Gamicon is a convention located in Cedar Rapids, IA that happens every year in the February time frame. This is an episode that we recorded earlier in the year and wanted to release it closer to the next show so perhaps folks can't plan on checking it out in 2020 - because you know hindsight! Also in this episode, we talk about speedrunning blind video games and Board Boy Rob shows up midway to give us weather and traffic updates. We hope you like Gamicon...and Board Games! Check out the 2020 Gamicon February 28th thru March 1st all the specifics can be found at www.gamicon.org
This week your favorite boys traveled overseas to visit the bustling port city of Yokohama - who knew 1868 Japan could be so much fun? In Yokohama, each player is a merchant broadening their sales channels, investing in technology and completing contracts. Only one player comes out on top and (spoiler) ... it wasn't Campbell! Also this episode: Rob and Josh road-tripped to BGG Con and didn't kill each other (we think), Disney+ is a thing and Chris from Meeple Overboard is here to help with a new segment!
The boys fought for their lives (in space) this week in Nemesis from Awaken Realms. This semi-cooperative horror, survival, exploration game could easily be described as "Alien the board game" but there is so much more to it than that. Relationships were tested, friends became enemies, enemies became friends, and Rob threw a Molotov at Campbell. Also this episode: Josh is back and talks a bit about his Cardboard Caucus experience, Ben and Rob play more games and Campbell has a Molotov thrown at him.
Well we did it ... another season of TBBP is in the books. We close out this chapter on Season Four with a play of Architects of the West Kingdom from Renegade Game Studios/Garphill Games. Also this episode: Ben talks about the worst kind of holes, Campbell and Josh hype up some upcoming Midwest board game cons and Rob has an encounter with the game that got away. See ya later Season Four!

Within the charming valley of Everdell, a civilization of forest critters is thriving and expanding. Also, frog ambassadors from the land of Pearlbrook are hella dope. Welp, it finally happened. It only took four seasons, but we're finally doing a feature episode on a game NOT currently on the BGG Top 100. We generally take this qualifier seriously, but Black Angel from Pearl Games had our full attention at Gen Con. It may currently be 4,269, but it's number one in our hearts. Also this episode: the boys answer the ultimate gaming question - which original Monopoly piece is best? Ben's board game collection continues to expand and the boys introduce a new contest!
Still recovering from Gen Con 2019? Don't worry we are too. This year Rob, Campbell and Josh made the annual trek to Indianapolis, Indiana for the best four days in gaming. Hanging alongside 70k attendees, the boys bought, played and learned about so many great games hitting the market later this year. In this BONUS episode, the boys recap their day by day experiences at the con LIVE from their room (419) at the Westin hotel. We hope you like boardgames.

Luckily the boys were joined by Rob's best half, his wife Amy, to help breakdown one of Stefan Feld's most popular titles. Also this game, Campbell fills us in on his recent trip to Croatia, Amy and Rob highlight their favorite party game in Cool Game Corner and Josh bones out.
This week your favorite boys grabbed their hair nets and aprons to run a booming fast food empire in Food Chain Magnate. Splotter games has always been known for their intricate mechanisms ... did this game live up to that reputation? Did Ben's price gouging strategy work? Was Campbell's variety of burgers and pizza enough to draw the crowds? Also this episode: we all played some really, really dope games that we're also going to talk about. Some of them were more dope than others. We hope you like board games.
Board Boys Campbell and Rob are back with an all new BONUS episode. Joined by Rob's wife, Amy, and son-in-law/uncle, Callum, the group worked together to build the most impressive castles in Between Two Castles of Mad King Ludwig. Oh yeah, we're giving away a copy of BTCOMKL!!

Also this episode, Ben shares his love for patios, Campbell explains that patios and decks are not the same thing, Rob launches a new podcast about patios and Josh is apathetic to patios.
The sun is setting on the first day of your march across a land that borders on the familiar. You scale a hill and watch as the lights in a village to the west go out, one by one. Also this episode: Josh embraces his new, favorite catch phrase, Rob is excited to retire a bit, Campbell tries a new segment ... that doesn't work and Ben spoils the group with sweets.
We close the curtain on season three this week with a banger. Also this episode: We briefly revisit Root for some additional thoughts after a few plays. Cam takes on the country of Peru. Rob travels across the country and nearly dies ... twice! Ben shares his latest fashion tips and Joe plays DOS - not UNO.
It isn't often that our podcast lines up with Kickstarter so we took full advantage this week, breaking down Leder Game's hit, Root.
