Peter Rollins is an author, philosopher, storyteller, producer and public speaker who has gained an international reputation for overturning traditional notions of religion and forming “churches” that preach the Good News that we can’t be satisfied, that life is difficult, and that we don’t know the secret. Challenging the idea that faith concerns questions relating to belief, Peter’s incendiary and religionless reading of Christianity attacks the distinction between the sacred and the secular. It critiques theism and it sets aside questions regarding life after death to explore the possibility of life before death. At 19, while in his sophomore year of college, BJ was electrocuted and subsequently became a triple amputee. Undaunted, BJ returned to Princeton to study art history and eventually decided to focus on medicine, which ultimately led him into palliative care. Palliative care is a specialty that focuses on patients with life limiting and terminal illnesses, it requires an intimate knowledge of death and a heart that is courageous enough to look into the darkest corners of ourselves to find out what we are ultimately living for. The famed German poet Rainer Maria Rilke wrote, "Let everything happen to you, beauty and terror, just keep going, no feeling is final," BJ is the living embodiment of this idea. Shoshana Berger is the editorial director at IDEO and coauthor of the book A Beginners Guide To The End. Shoshana got her start as a writer for a magazine called Bikini (no jokes) for whom she interviewed Jeff Buckley and Allen Ginsberg. That led to writing for the New York Times, SPIN, WIRED, and a stint as the editorial director (more like “cool-hunter”) for Young & Rubicam. With little more than a fuzzy idea and a boil in the blood, she went on to found ReadyMade, a national do-it-yourself design magazine. The venture was funded by 10 credit cards. (Her credit rating is excellent). ReadyMade was a finalist for National Magazine Awards in 2005 and 2006. After co-authoring the book ReadyMade: How to Make Almost Everything (Clarkson Potter), she sold the business to the Meredith Corp., publisher of Better Homes & Gardens. Shoshana then joined WIRED as director of special projects in 2011, and launched a new website, WIRED Design. She landed at IDEO in 2013 as editorial director and hasn't looked back. “I was a four-time loser before I realized I was in the wrong game.” That was the first line of the autobiographical story that appeared on the back of every loaf of Dave’s Killer Bread from 2005 to 2014. “Four-time loser” refers to his four prison sentences for crimes ranging from burglary to armed robbery to drug dealing. He once shared abandoned houses with cockroaches on the streets of Detroit in the dead of winter, and now he lives in a luxurious high-rise penthouse in downtown PDX. His story epitomizes transformation. The story on the bread bag remained unchanged until 2014 after Dahl had a well-publicized mental breakdown. He had to accept that—at least for Dave Dahl—there’s no “happily ever after”. But he finds great satisfaction in “fighting the good fight”, one day at a time. He believes that forgiveness of self and others is essential to inner peace and personal growth. But it’s only one of many lessons he’s come away with through all of his struggles—and triumphs. Dave’s Killer Bread, a family endeavor, was sold to Flowers Foods in 2015, leaving Dave with a void to fill. He spent the next 2-plus years building what is perhaps the largest collection of African tribal art in the world. During this time, he lived a semi-hermetic lifestyle. Now, with a healed heart and mind, he steps back out on a mission to help inspire others to find their own brand of success. Dave: “‘Good Seed’ is much more than a killer bread recipe. Having been a ‘bad seed’ and destroying everything in my path as a troubled young man, I finally found the path of acceptance, humility and teachability. It gives me the courage to fall down 7 times and get up 8.” Dahl hosts a podcast, “Felony Inc.”, which runs live on Fridays at 10am Pacific on www.startupradionetwork.com and on any podcast app. Dave has candid conversations with former felons who’ve become honest, hard-working entrepreneurs. Having used adversity as a springboard, they have inspiring stories of personal transformation, grit, and startup experience. Previously-recorded episodes are also available. https://m.soundcloud.com/felonyincpodcast Dave’s recently-reformed band, the Killer Granddaddies, is made up of fellow former knuckleheads. They play blues rock covers and originals. Dahl’s overarching goal is to inspire and enable better people, businesses, and communities—in his words, “to help anyone who is willing to do the work to enjoy the journey like I have...to create their own success story.” For more of Dave: Website: https://davedahl360.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/killerbreadman/ To become a patron and help this program continue producing Mood Altering Substance, go to www.patreon.com/hellohuman and pledge any amount. Sabrina Ward Harrison published her first book, Spilling Open: The Art of Becoming Yourself, at the age of 23. Written between the ages of eighteen and twenty-one, Spilling Open was an intimate and moving picture of the contradictions young women face as they are asked to grow into societal norms of femininity. Her tender honesty and singular aesthetic energy turned Harrison into the voice of a generation. Though she went on to publish four more books, to call Harrison an author isn’t accurate. Books were certainly her unique way to distribute the work, but her practice has always begun in her compositions. Harrison’s canvases – whether the pages of a book or a wood paneled painting – appear effortless; flowing bold, singular marks pivot and plot across colored fields of energy. These saturated areas of color, hand written words and beautifully worked surfaces, create a combination of iconography that is immediately recognizable and Harrison’s own. Marked by repetition, intuition, and cultural references – as well as an endurance of symbolism and diaristic expression – means there is an undeniable continuity in the vocabulary of Harrison’s work. She has taught creativity worldwide for 2 decades with a belief she holds strong to, that, “we must create what we most need to find” This past year she has brought her teaching online and created 2 groundbreaking online course experiences. The first, Untether~ a course experience about creative freedom. Liberate, opening this May is a course about leaving your mark and creating the book you most want to find. Rhodes believes that music heals and that love is real. From her first open-mic performances at the O.K. Hotel, Seattle, to her latest album I Am, these beliefs in the transformative power of song are distilled into gems of quiet intensity that traverse blues, jazz, folk and rock. Her full-length albums include I Am, produced by Johnny Sangster (2017), Elixir (2011), Afriqueen Stare (2003), and Songs of Angels (1999). Additional works that demonstrate Rhodes’ range and virtuosity are Lullabies (2013), a riveting performance of traditional spirituals, On the Boards, Seattle; as well as 2 Old Chicks (2005), a 50-piece orchestral film score, created in collaboration with Doris Bartha and Steve Brush. Rhodes began writing at a young age, composing poems that “always had a melody too.” Skipping class to stay home and learn new instruments, Rhodes found in music a way to go inside herself, and to inspire others to go inside themselves, to learn, to heal, to find love or to leave it behind. One source of continued inspiration for the artist is an autograph, from the poet Maya Angelou, that hangs prominently in her studio, a memento of their meeting at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute. Rhodes earned her B.A. in music composition from Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT. Jazz luminaries Bill Lowe and Anthony Braxton were favorite teachers who encouraged her to explore and push beyond any self-imposed boundaries. These lessons have allowed her to continually grow and evolve her music. She has collaborated with musicians including Matt Chamberlain (David Bowie), Brad Houser (Edie Brickell & New Bohemians), Mike Dillon (Ani DiFranco), Eyvind Kang (Bill Frisell), Jeff Fielder (Mark Lanegan), Dan Walker (LeRoy Bell), Jessica Lurie, Keith Lowe (Fiona Apple), Amy Denio, Jessika Kenney, Mike Stone (Wayne Horvitz) and Skerik. Rhodes muses, “It’s easy to be cynical. It takes a lot to be intentional. It takes a lot to love.” I Am takes the listener into love and then heartache, through rebirth, and finally, up into freedom. Richard Pimentel is one of the most incredible and inspiring humans we have ever met. It is no surprise there is a movie based on his life. He was abandoned at birth, raised in poverty, a volunteer for a suicide mission in Vietnam, blown up during the celebration for him surviving the suicide mission, and then comes home and starts helping other disabled vets get employment and eventually helps co-write the Americans With Disabilities Act. He is a walking story of the power of resilience and what someone can do when they believe in themselves. Do not miss this episode and make sure to listen to the very end! Sam and Katie discuss the nature of reality and where pain and suffering fit in. They talk about living in the moment, free from your painful thoughts and beliefs, and do Byron Katie's The Work around Sam's recent heartbreak. more about Byron Katie via www.thework.com Byron Katie became severely depressed in her early thirties. For almost a decade she spiraled down into rage, self-loathing, and constant thoughts of suicide. For the last two years she was often unable to leave her bedroom. Then one morning in February 1986, she experienced a life-changing realization. There are various names for an experience like this. Katie calls it “waking up to reality.” In that instant, she says, I discovered that when I believed my thoughts, I suffered, but that when I didn't believe them, I didn't suffer, and that this is true for every human being. Freedom is as simple as that. I found that suffering is optional. I found a joy within me that has never disappeared, not for a single moment. That joy is in everyone, always. She realized that what had been causing her depression was not the world around her, but the beliefs she'd had about the world. Instead of hopelessly trying to change the world to match her thoughts about how it should be, she could question these thoughts and, by meeting reality as it is, experience unimaginable freedom and joy. As a result, a bedridden, suicidal woman was instantly filled with love for everything life brings. The Work, Katie's process of self-inquiry, didn't develop from this experience; she says that it woke up with her, as her, that February morning in 1986. The first people who did The Work reported that it had transformed their lives, and she soon began receiving invitations to teach the process publicly. Since 1986, she has brought The Work to millions of people across the world, at free public events, in prisons, hospitals, churches, corporations, universities, schools, at weekend workshops, at her amazing nine-day School for The Work, and through the Institute for The Work of Byron Katie. Brené Brown and Sam Lamott sit down to talk about moving through fear, the power of vulnerability, and letting go of shame. In her words: I’m a research professor at the University of Houston where I hold the Huffington Endowed Chair. I’ve spent the past sixteen years studying courage, vulnerability, empathy, and shame. I’m the author of four books: The Gifts of Imperfection, Daring Greatly, Rising Strong, and Braving the Wilderness. The bottom line: I believe that vulnerability – the willingness to be “all in” even when you know it can mean failing and hurting – is brave. I do NOT believe that cussing and praying are mutually exclusive. And, I absolutely believe that the passing lane is for passing only.
