We had a wonderful evening discussing beer, yeast, and all things White Labs with Erik Fowler! We specifically brought him on The Show to discuss the first packaged beer from the lords of yeast. It true White Labs spirit, they zigged when most would zag; for their first offering, Tabberer, they released a mixed pack, not of different beers, but the same beer fermented with two different yeasts. Each 4 pack includes two beers fermented with WLP008 East Coast Ale Yeast and two beers finished with the strain that started it all, WLP001 California Ale Yeast. We hope you enjoy this audio version of the live stream show, and take this as a reminder that you can join us, every Thursday at 6:30, on Facebook or YouTube, for some entertainment, knowledge and fun! Yes, you read that right!Yes, the sale of Ballast Point Brewing Company to Constellation Brands is when our friends over at Beer Night in San Diego coined using #IndieBeer instead of craft. Yes, the initial blow back on social media from that was insane for those of us that adopted the effort right away. Yes, eventually, everyone came around. Yes, that's what lead to the Brewers Association making a symbol to help consumers understand which beers are produced by independent breweries. Yes, it is why we're called The Indie Beer Show; we wanted to be extremely clear in what we support! We're stoked this Mt. Rushmore of #SDBeer is once again a member of the indie beer family and we're welcoming them back the safest way we can, with a live stream show for all of you!The beers we'll be featuring in this show:HougoumontKings & Convicts Brewing Co. - Pilsner - German - 4.8% ABV - 23 IBUs - Full of character, this lightly hopped Pilsner has notes of citrus, squeezed Kiwifruit and nectar fruits.Swingin' Friar AleBallast Point Brewing Company - Pale Ale - American - 5.5% ABV -Manta RayBallast Point Brewing Company - IPA - Imperial / Double - 8.5% ABV - 70 IBUs - This new IPA rises above the rest. We’ve developed many IPA recipes in our R&D program, but right from the tank, our Manta Ray Double IPA was a winner. Aromas of fresh, citrusy tangerine, melon and light pine leap from the beer and linger over a smooth finish. Like its namesake, this brew can sneak up on you – a big beer without a bite.High West Barrel Aged 2017 Victory at SeaBallast Point Brewing Company - Porter - Imperial / Double Coffee - 12% ABV - 35 IBUs - High West Bourbon/Rye Blend aged for 7 months. Layers of complexity emerge with notes of soft caramel and smoky oak over a dark chocolate and roasted almond bodyWe hope you enjoy this audio version of the live stream and want to remind you to join us every Thursday night at 6:30 on our Facebook or YouTube channels to watch it all (and drink along with us)! We start the show expressing our support for those in the streets screaming for justice and equality. Abel leaves the show in the middle to join one of the moving protests that came near his home. Know that we condemn racism in all forms and are committed to destroying it in our communities. Yes, you read that correctly. Greg Koch from the one and only Stone Brewing will be joining us on what is sure to be an epic night for our fans and show members alike! We're going to do things a bit differently for this one; all the traditional framework of the show will happen at the beginning and then we'll spend the remainder of The Show discussing all things Stone Brewing with Greg, he joins us at 42:35 if you want to skip to that part. Here are the beers we will be featuring and I can already tell you I will be pre-gaming with Stone IPA :Stone Buenaveza Salt & Lime LagerStone Notorious P.O.G. It is impossible to ignore the inequalities in our world. We condemn racism in any form and are committed to its destruction in our communities. Far too many people of color have perished in the hands of those that are supposed to protect us. All lives cannot matter until black lives matter. We encourage you to commit to ending racisim and support Dr. J. Jackson-Beckham's Craft Beer For All efforts. This week's show features one of the very best humans in the #SDBEER world, George Thornton from the one two punch of Home Brewing Co. and The Homebrewer. If you have not met him, make sure you visit as soon as we're allowed to hug people again! We had a great night sampling beers with George and talking all things Home Brew Co! He even sent us an ABV Smuggler as a bonus gift. Strap in, we get chatty and almost hit the 2 hour mark. Stay safe, do what you can to support your local, independent breweries, busnesses, and artists and we hope all is well with your and your family. This week we're joined by the Chief Eternal Optimist from Deft Brewing, Morris Nuspl! We love our new format of doing the shows live and if you're all "What are you talking about?" in your head right now, we're live streaming our shows through Face Book on Thursday nights at 6:30pm. We had a blast hanging out with the head brewer and co-founder of this unique brewery here in San Diego, if you haven't been (especially if you're a traditional European beer fan) you owe it to yourself to check this place out. If you want to see the video of the live stream, the link is below as well for you!https://youtu.be/0dCvJMCo8Zw See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
For the foreseeable future we will be recording our shows through StreamYard but that gives us the opportunity to live stream them to Facebook! We decided there was no one better to be our first live guest than Mr. Paul Segura, the brewmaster from the world renowned Karl Strauss Brewing Co. We had a blast hanging out with each other, Paul, and most importantly, our wonderful listeners that joined us for the stream. It was more than rewarding to be able share some #SDBeers and jokes with everyone. If you are listening to the audio only version of the show, you will notice a significant quality difference than our in person shows; it's just the limitations of these type of services but let's face it, it's way better than not hanging out together. We miss you, we miss spending time at our favorite breweries, and we miss hugs from our friends most of all. Stay safe, do what you can to support your local, independent breweries and businesses, and we hope all is well with you and your family. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Hey amazing fans of The Indie Beer Show, we're back with our first show recorded remotely! We landed on using StreamYard to record the show and we think it worked out pretty well. All of these platforms have their weaknesses but this one has one good strength, we can live stream our shows to Facebook, which we will do on May 14th. The audio quality obviously isn't the same as when we're in the same room but it works and it keeps everyone safe. We start the show with a statement that is impossible to actually convey in words; the gravity of the situation the #SDBEER industry is facing currently is tremendous and calling it difficult is the underestimate of the century. Please #DoWhatYouCan to support your favorite independent breweries in anyway possible. Here is the database we mention in the show that lists most San Diego breweries current statuses. Feel free to update the information if anything is out of date. We miss you guys, we miss tasting rooms, we miss hugs, we miss cheers, we miss leaning over to a person we don't know and asking them what they are drinking. These are unique times we're living in. With all that said, for our livecast show on May 14th (starting at 6:30pm), we're going to tell you what beers to pickup soon so you can drink along with us! That will give us all a taste of the community we are currently missing. Stay safe, stay healthy, and know your friends at TIBS! love you! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Fresh off their 4th anniversary, we had a the opportunity to sit down with Mike Czech and Chris Leguizamon from Pure Project to talk about their brewery that has been cranking out exceptional beer since the day they opened.Known for their murky IPAs by most, we're here to tell you that they have a deep bag of phenomenal products that you need to be exploring. One #SDBeer TIBS! really enjoys from Pure is pictured above, Log Cabin, a barrel aged imperial stout with cocoa and maple syrup. We appreciate the restraint on the sweetness in a time where some beers are competing with the caloric content of ice cream, this beer brings enough to the table to be present but not enough to overwhelmed the subtleties of the barrel. Strap in, this episode lands heavily on the longer side but we had a blast handing our with Mike and Chris, enjoy! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We get to discuss his role in both beer brands and what it's like for his peers to support him being involved with the guild, leading to his new position. We had a terrific night hanging out with Kris; the full TIBS! team was present for this recording, and we really dig it when that's possible! If you haven't been to Booze Brothers before, definitely get up there very soon, they are making great beer and have a very comfortable tasting room to enjoy it in. They also recently opened a second tasting room, located at 606 Mission Ave, in Oceanside. When the opportunity presented itself for us to sit down with one of the younger but impressive breweries in #SDBeer, and Sore Eye Cup champion, The Original 40 Brewing Co., we did not hesitate! On a wonderful Wednesday night in the TapCraft Studio, we had the company of head brewer, Chris Gillogy and owner, Steve Billings to discuss how the first 7 months of OG 40 has been going. We taste through several of their beers, talk about some upcoming additions to the menu, and have a grand old time hanging out with good friends! We'll be launching a #29DayChallange on Feb 1st to get you hyped for the return of Indie Beer Madness! Yep, we can't wait to celebrate #SDBeer with another good old bracket showdown. If you are not aware of the difficult situation one of our favorite breweries south of the border is facing, Insurgente, please check out Beth Demmon's article in SD Magazine. Here's a few excerpts to give you an idea of the complexity of the situation:"October 5, 2019, officials from the city and Baja California’s new controlling party, the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA), shuttered the tasting room and halted production of the brewhouse, citing a lack of numerous operating permits, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.""Ivan Morales, co-founder of Insurgente with his brother Damian, disputes this. “We have all the required permits, although they're accusing us of not having them.”"Insurgente has turned to their supporters for help, many have began using the hashtag #freeinsurgente to show their support for the difficult situation. There was a recent event at Machete to support Insurgente and Esthela (with Beth) was able to sit down with Ivan Morales. At the time of this discussion, Insurgente had obtained permission to reopen, unfortunately, that only lasted 2 or 3 days, and they have since been closed again.Insurgente, in response to the most recent closing posted this:It is evident that we are being subjected to harassment by the municipal authorities and [Mayor] Arturo González Cruz, who does not tire of seeking excuses to close us, the company said on Twitter.Jaime Bonilla, Governor of Baja CA, who has been accused of making this situation personal due to his brother living across the street from the brewery, is not backing down, he gave the following statements in an LA Times article by Wendy Fry:“Like I don’t have anything else to do as governor of the state than to worry about this brewery,” said Bonilla. “No one respects the laws in Tijuana. They don’t seem to understand this is a new government and they can no longer get away with whatever they want like they have for the past 30 years.”“Read my lips. They are not going to be opening the brewery there,” said Bonilla, definitively."We are hopeful our friends at Insurgente find a way to navigate the complex governmental situation and reopen soon; we'll certainly keep you up to date. They are facing a situation that is only made more dire by the history of inconsistent and corrupt governmental members and institutions in Mexico. To that end, I want to remind you, when this recording was made, Insurgente was brewing beer and about to reopen their tasting room. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week we are at The Rabbit Hole to talk about the #SDBeer Holiday Food Drive! Brandon and Esthela hold it down in my absence. They start the show with a rundown of how the food drive started at the party, for the record, the effort runs through the end of the year. You can take food to Societe or you can donate directly to the San Diego Food Bank here. Then they jump into a segment with patron of the show, Roger! It's always fun when we can get one of our friends of the show on the show. Backed up with James from The Rabbit Hole to discus their awesomeness. A significant amount of Paul Segura love is thrown in there for good measure! This will also be our last show of the year. We are going to take a few weeks off to enjoy the holiday season and time with our families. We want to thank everyone that listens for their support and hope we brought you a significant amount of education/entertainment this year. There are several craft focused entities in San Diego that garner significant credit for being part of the early spark that lead to the Capital of Craft moniker being placed on our city, Obrien's Pub is one of those places and we were honored to sit down with Tyson and Kristina Blake. Supporting the local beer industry since '94, Obrien's is currently celebrating their 25th anniversary and we were lucky to get to try a few of the collaboration beers they did to honor the occasion. Tyson way overdid and planned a secret 3 course pairing meal for us to enjoy on The Show! We were understandably excited by the proposition and massively satiated by the meal before the night concluded. Strap in, this is a long one; luckily we record digitally because we would have had to change a few tapes, back in the day!PS: Another reminder to come out the #SDBeer Holiday party on December 7th at Societe Brewing! One of the newer hot beds of indie beer in San Diego is happening in a neighborhood we call East Village. This neighborhood runs along the east border of downtown, from city College to the water, encompasses Petco Park, and is defined on the north and east sides by the 5. Duck Foot graciously offered to be the hosts of a multi-entity episode! We gathered friends from Duck Foot, Melvin, Resident (technically not East village but whatevs), Amplified, and opening in the famed Monkey Paw location, Bottle Rocket Bar and Grill!Get ready for a romp around this small but vibrant area of downtown the likes of which your ears have never seen (is that even a thing?). We had a ton of fun making this show and I hope it comes through the space portal to you properly! The #SDBeer Holiday food Drive is in full swing, please consider taking in some food to one of the more than 30 collections locations available to you. You can also donate funds directly the the San Diego Food Bank, they can provide an astonishing 5 meals for every $1 donated. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The first pop up event to support the #SDBeer Holiday Food Drive went down last Wednesday evening at My Yard Live. 9 representatives from SD Beer joined us for a friendly beer trivia contest for the entertainment of those that showed up to support the food drive, now in its 6th year.A massive thank you goes out to Quiz Show Mania for providing the amazing game show system that we got to use!We had contestants from My Yard Live , The Lost Abbey, Rip Current Brewing , Stave & Nail Brewing Company , Brewchive , Chula Vista Brewery Belching Beaver, and Rouleur Brewing Company and one winner took home the trophy and has bragging rights for an entire year!As you visit breweries over the next few weeks, please take in some food to donate or donate a few dollars towards our effort to help those less fortunate than ourselves. San Diego Beer Week has ended its 10 day run but that doesn't mean the fruits of #SDBW are all gone. Esthela, with our original producer, David Martin, went Home to talk about our collaboration beer, Home of Indie, The Homebrewer/Home Brew Co., homebrewing, and friendship. George, Founder/Owner, Jacob, Head Brewer, and Liquor Store Mike join us for a live show during the release party for Home of Indie! It was incredible that we got to do another version last year's SDBW collab with Jacob. I feel like we have a tradition going now! It's a single malt and single hop, West Coast IPA, using Pure Idaho Malt and Nelson. The beer turned out great and will be around for a while, so get to the source and try it!If you're not totally beer weeked out, our first #SDBeer Holiday Food Drive benefit happens on Wed, November 13th at My Yard Live at 7pm. Nine brewery representatives will compete in a few rounds of beer trivia for glory (and your entertainment) in an effort to encourage you to bring out food for the SD Food Bank. Come have some fun, and if you can't make it, hit up one of the other 30+ locations where you can drop off food to help those less fortunate in our city! At first glance, we were welcomed into an unassuming room, the walls lined with full wine racks, a table and some chairs awaiting us, but soon we realized this was a unique space. Belching Beaver's Tavern & Grill in Vista is built is what used to be a bank. In renovating the building, they made the wise decision to keep the bank vault, door included. They also used the safe deposit boxes as the conference style table. This is one of the coolest places we've ever recorded a Show! We were joined by Heather Franchini, Production Coordinator, and Thomas Peters, ead Brewer at the Tavern. We have a great discussion about their repeated Alpha King success, SDBW, and all things Belching Beaver. We throw in some of our favorite San Diego Beer week events, beer news, and a ton of laughter as the icing on this cake for your ears. Have a listen and then go kick beer weeks butt! It's the most wonderful time, of the beer! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In the Halloween spirit, Pariah Brewing Co. is teaming up with The Good Seed Food Company for a Spooktacular Beer Pairing. It's a self guided pairing of small dishes with taster size beers that will only set you back $20. There was little risk of these entities coming together for something ordinary, and they over delivered. Are you ready for bugs and beer pairings?Chef Chuy worked with Jesse Smith to establish what beers worked with what insects and then they turned that experiential data in to a mini pairing meal, just for you. I have to say, if you're on the fence about eating insects, this is a great way to dip your toe into the creepy pond; Esthela was a champ and ate all 4 dishes! These plate, while featuring different bugs, aren't extremely insect forward, flavor wise. They have done a great job at balancing flavors and textures with these dishes. Think of it as Bugs and Beer 101.I hope you're all adventurous eaters as you listen to us sample this pairing and discuss the strangest other things we've eaten in our lifetime. If you're bored, throw us an Itunes rating! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We are super stoked to be celebrating our first anniversary here at TIBS! It wouldn't be possible without you guys, the greatest fans on Earth, so, thank you!The fine folks at North Park Beer Co. were incredibly nice to us and made us one of the freshest kegs of Hop Fu! to ever leave their building. The great people that made the fine decision to join us for our party/live show drained that keg in less than 2 hours! We also grabbed a giant tray of Stupid Wings from The Good Seed Food Company, they were devoured in even less time!Currently, I'm sitting in our hotel room outside of GABF with roughly 45 minutes before we can go into the Friday night session, which gave me just enough time to get you guys this episode! Next week (or so), we'll have an episode from the largest beer festival in America!Enjoy listening to us talk about our first year, Esthela and I had a blast recording this show with a gathering of some of our favorite people laughing and drinking with us! I hope our gratitude for your support comes through, but just in case THANK YOU to every single person that has ever listened to The Indie Beer Show! It's a special time in beer currently, wet hop season! You just asked yourself, "why do we care?" Well, you care because you're the type of indie beer person that loves beers you can only get once, and there are a lot of opportunities for that right now!We collected a handful of currently available wet hop beers, brought in Liz Bauer from Glacier Hops Ranch, and had delightful time talking about them. Did you know that there are a few hop farms, here in San Diego? You do now! If you pay close enough attention, you'll notice that I was off my game and was inaccurate in almost every statement of where certain hops are grown, I have no idea why, but I'm thankful for Liz's patience in correcting all of my mistakes. Have a fun time making fun of me in your head why you listen and once again, thank you to Liz for joining us! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The CA Craft Beer Summit is a 2 day educational convention put on by the CCBA. This year celebrated to 30th anniversary of the CCBA! The convention culminates with a giant, California beer festival featuring over 600 breweries and 1800 beers. That happens to be the largest beer festival on the West Coast. We are thankful that we had the chance to attend. I found many of the seminars informative and really enjoyable. In particular, 2 speeches hit home with me, Dr J. Jackson-Beckam's (BA's director of Diversity) session titled “Stop ‘Doing Diversity!’ Build an Inclusive, Equitable, and Just Workplace that Drives Success” and Garrett Oliver of Brooklyn Brewery on "Reality vs. facsimile" in the American Food Culture and the Implications for Craft Beer. This week's show is focused on standout moments from both of these speakers, I hope you enjoy this unique episode! If you are reading this on release day, 9/23, and can't make our First Anniversary Show Party tomorrow, be sure to leave us a voicemail at 619-698-7038 that tells us your favorite moment from the first year of TIBS! We'll play them all on the anniversary Show! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Eppig Brewing is in the middle of an extremely long hitting streak and will be the first company to successfully leave the Brewery Igniter program! With a new 30 BBL production facility nearing completion in Vista, the Oktoberfest season almost upon us, and their third anniversary on the horizon, we thought it was a great time to sit down with Nathan and Clayton, both co-founding brewers and have a discussion about all things Eppig! They have garnered notoriety for their lagers but I'm a fan of their entire portfolio of well executed beers. We dip into the history of the name of their brewery, discuss the Oktoberfest celebrations, get an update on their new location and some possible timelines for debuting in North County, and have a blast hanging out with two seriously authentic brewers that genuinely love their craft. This would be a great episode to listen to while visiting their Waterfront Biergarten, just saying. Hit the play button and enjoy! ** Heads up! We'll be taking a week off next week. Don't worry, we'll be back the following Monday with some interviews from the CCBA conference and festival in Long Beach!** See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Did you know that Thorn Brewing (mid sentence shout out to Thorn for using a .beer address, like us!) recently opened a new tasting room in Mission Hills? Well they did and it's a really cool place to hang out, have a tasty beverage and play a little skeeball. We linked up with Tom and Jay from Thorn to have a great discussion about all the things currently going on and enjoy the amenities of the newest addition to their family. They now have 3 locations for your indie beer needs, the OG spot on Thorn St., the newer production facility in Barrio Logan, and the aforementioned new spot in Mission Hills. I hope you have a Relay IPA, Hopster Pot, or any other delicious Thorn beer in your hand as you hit the play button! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

When invited to do a live recording at the 7th anniversary party for Societe Brewing we accepted with complete disregard for any other opportunities that would come up; we dig them that much! Why do you think we recruited Brandon to be on The Show?Lovingly dubbed SoSiete by pun master Ben Raymond, this party was incredibly fun to attend! 11 restaurants joined in on the fun to feed the masses, beer flowed without limit, awesome stemless glassware and t-shirts were received by all, and the celebration was one for the ages!Hit the play button and may all your beers be #indiebeer !
