It gives me great pleasure to welcome Andrew Phillips to this week’s Great Australian stories in the Making. Andrew was destined to have a very promising career in the world of AFL in the 80’s. Sadly a degenerative back condition could not stand the rigors of AFL football and his career was cut short. The former Carlton footballer turned to the world of business and with the same grit, determination and prowess learnt on the field then applied in the board room. He has spent a lifetime working to create educational opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, and is now running The Phillips Brothers Foundation. During one of the strangest and toughest years of our lives, we invited Frank Ponissi, the General Manager – Football at Melbourne Storm, Frank was at the club during the years when they were heavily punished for salary cap breaches - and the fallout that occurred - and how they had to work through those tough periods, yet were able to rebuild and become the powerhouse club they were before. In fact, they became even better despite all the challenges. Frank shares much of the wisdom he gained through that experience. The lessons he emphasises always revolve around the importance of high standards, accountability and plain old hard work. “Hard work will always beat talent when talent doesn’t work hard" - - - - Visit Business Benchmark Group businessbenchmarkgroup.com.au Get in touch: Email stefankazakis@businessbenchmarkgroup.com.au SUBSCRIBE TO OUR PODCAST iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/business-benchmark-group-podcast/id1372652118?mt=2 SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/businessbenchmarkgroup iHeartRadio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-Business-Benchmark-29372537/ Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/business-benchmark-group-podcast PodBean: https://www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/yi4rd-6bc65/Business-Benchmark-Group-Podcast ACast: https://acast.com/businessbenchmarkgroup Our Website: http://businessbenchmarkgroup.com.au/resources/podcasts/

There’s no point exceeding your customer’s expectations if it’s sending you broke. Before you think about more things you can do for your customer, first and foremost, you should focus on delivering exactly what you promised. Fulfil everything you said you would do. It’s surprising how many business owners lose sight of this. This is by far the most important aspect of the relationship. If you then want to offer even more than what you promised, you need to understand what impact this has on your business and deliver it in a strategic and systematic way, otherwise it could be costing you more than you think. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Subscribe to our podcast. We all know that keeping your existing clients is easier and cheaper than finding new ones. Every business owner’s goal should be to develop customer loyalty. Though it’s important to note that there is a distinct difference between loyalty and repeat business. Developing customer loyalty relies on you consistently exceeding your clients expectations. If you only meet the minimum standard they expect – that’s hardly going to get them excited about coming back to you next time, or calling their friends and telling them about how awesome your business is. You need to delight your customers. You need to surprise them, to exceed their expectations, to meet their every need – and then do more! If you do this, your customers have no reason or desire to go anywhere else, they won’t be swayed by cheaper competition. They know you, trust you and become advocates for your business. In this short podcast, Stefan explores all this and more. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Subscribe to our podcast. Selecting the right people is just the beginning of building a successful team; to have them perform at a benchmark level, you need to focus on creating an environment that allows them to excel. In this short episode, Stefan explains the six keys to building a winning team. 1. Strong leadership 2. Having a common goal 3. Rules of the game 4. Action Plan 5. We chat with Chris West, the Managing Director of Fleet Plant Hire in Melbourne. Fleet Plant Hire is an industry leader in Melbourne, providing earth moving equipment and operators for any project, including major infrastructure works across Victoria. Chris has been working with us at Business Benchmark Group since August 2015, and in that time revenue has more than quadrupled, the number of trucks has tripled and team size has tripled. Chris was getting busier and his time was in ever more demand - and eventually he realised something needed to change. Although his natural reaction was to be central to everything in the business, with our guidance, he was able to empower his team to take on more responsibility - and to his surprise, they not only met the challenge, they excelled. This led to flow-on benefits for Chris and the business. Chris shares his own learnings and gives advice that will resonate with anyone leading a team. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Subscribe to our podcast - NEW EPISODES EVERY TUESDAY! iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/business-benchmark-group-podcast/id1372652118?mt=2 Spotify: https://podcasters.spotify.com/podcast/5ZbuFOBaZ8YQ3eT1u3Y14R SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/businessbenchmarkgroup iHeartRadio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-Business-Benchmark-29372537/ Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/business-benchmark-group-podcast PodBean: https://www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/yi4rd-6bc65/Business-Benchmark-Group-Podcast ACast: https://acast.com/businessbenchmarkgroup

Our interview with Matt Spiteri, the owner of ESC Electrical. Matt shares his story of incredible growth of his business, particularly in the past 18 months. ESC Electrical (http://escelectrical.com.au) offer electrical services to the high-volume domestic and multi-residential markets. Matt has been working with us at Business Benchmark Group since October 2017. Although a relatively young business, ESC electrical was an up and coming player in the market prior to joining with us. In the 18 months since he began working with us at Business Benchmark Group, ESC Electrical has fully established itself in the market with Matt taking the business to a whole new level. In this time, Matt has clearly seen his identity shift from being an operator in the business, to spending more of his time on higher hourly rate tasks as an owner and investor in the business. When he started working with us, Matt was still on the tools and working very long hours. 18 months later, Matt no longer works on the tools, works less hours in the business overall, yet the business has grown substantially and continues to grow to new and greater heights. A key development in the growth of the business was to focus on identifying and serving their ideal target market. This focus has ensured that their work they carry out is more profitable and predictable. This has led to stronger financial returns and continued growth. It has also allowed the team to continue to grow, with the addition of an administration team and the promotion of 'on-the-tools' staff to estimators. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Subscribe to our podcast - NEW EPISODES EVERY TUESDAY! iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/business-benchmark-group-podcast/id1372652118?mt=2 Spotify: https://podcasters.spotify.com/podcast/5ZbuFOBaZ8YQ3eT1u3Y14R SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/businessbenchmarkgroup iHeartRadio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-Business-Benchmark-29372537/ Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/business-benchmark-group-podcast PodBean: https://www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/yi4rd-6bc65/Business-Benchmark-Group-Podcast ACast: https://acast.com/businessbenchmarkgroup

As a business owner, you need to understand the difference between horizontal and vertical time, and ensure that the work you do is for a high hourly rate. If you want to build a progressive and growing business, the work you do needs to be at a higher level, and you must have the trust and confidence in your team to delegate your lower hourly rate tasks to. The backbone of the economy is small business - but their contribution is anything but small! There are an estimated two million businesses across Australia, providing nearly half of all employment. It is a crucial sector that underpins the operations of many larger businesses. But running a small business is not easy! If it were, everyone would be doing it. It’s not for the feint-hearted! But although it’s not easy, it does not need to be hard. In this episode, recorded from ABC Radio’s Nightlife, Stefan explores the activities that small business owners must do in order to be successful, including planning and understanding your numbers. After all, finance is the language of business and if you don’t know your numbers, you will be flying blind when it comes to running and growing a successful business. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Subscribe to our podcast - NEW EPISODES EVERY TUESDAY! iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/business-benchmark-group-podcast/id1372652118?mt=2 Spotify: https://podcasters.spotify.com/podcast/5ZbuFOBaZ8YQ3eT1u3Y14R SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/businessbenchmarkgroup iHeartRadio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-Business-Benchmark-29372537/ Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/business-benchmark-group-podcast PodBean: https://www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/yi4rd-6bc65/Business-Benchmark-Group-Podcast ACast: https://acast.com/businessbenchmarkgroup

Many business owners struggle with knowing what to charge for their products and services. When we first start out in business, it can be tempting to have low, or even discounted, prices as we often are desperate to land new business. However, this approach will quickly cause problems, including a tight cash flow, needing to more work for less and building a client base who are largely driven by price. Instead, we need to ensure our whole identity as business owners is about delivering value and setting prices based on this value you provide. This helps ensure that price is only one factor your customers consider when buying from you, but it isn’t the key factor. If you want to build a robust business and be able to invest in innovation, as well as build a reputation for high quality and service, your pricing model must allow you to do that. This week’s podcast is a recording of Stefan Kazakis appearance on ABC Radio’s Nightlife with tony Delroy. We interview Robert Krastich, owner of Sharper Facility Services (sharper.com.au) which offers high-end commercial cleaning in Melbourne. The business was established in 2004 and Robert had done a fantastic job growing it to that point. However, he realised he had reached a crossroads. Although he was making good income and had established a good client base, he also recognised he had lost some focus and commitment to growing the business. He knew he wanted to take his business to the next level, but he realised he didn’t have the knowledge or experience to successfully do so. In April 2018, Robert reached out to Business Benchmark Group. Since working with us to re-focus his business strategy and clearly articulating his goals, his business has gone to a whole new level. Robert imparts valuable advice and experience for all business owners, who will hear first-hand what it takes to break through your glass ceiling and take your business to new and greater heights. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Subscribe to our podcast: iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/business-benchmark-group-podcast/id1372652118?mt=2 Spotify: https://podcasters.spotify.com/podcast/5ZbuFOBaZ8YQ3eT1u3Y14R SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/businessbenchmarkgroup iHeartRadio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-Business-Benchmark-29372537/ Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/business-benchmark-group-podcast PodBean: https://www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/yi4rd-6bc65/Business-Benchmark-Group-Podcast ACast: https://acast.com/businessbenchmarkgroup

Stefan Kazakis joins ABC Nightlife's Tony Delroy to discuss why it's important for business owners to periodically take a good, hard look at the health of your business and determine what's working, what's not working and what are we doing about it. It's important that you just don't walk past a low standard in your business, you need to always be reflecting and analysing on what areas you can improve. Business owners should be investing at least 2 hours per week to think clearly about their business goals and determine how their business is going in the way to achieve them. Anyone who has ever run a small business can tell stories about the immeasurable value of word-of-mouth referrals by happy customers - some would even argue it is the most powerful form of advertising when someone is singing the praises of your company or product. Likewise, talk about a bad experience is news that travels far and wide - that's why business owners and their staff should strive to make sure customers are always happy so they will refer your product or service to family and friends. Stefan Kazakis, CEO of the Business Benchmark Group, joins Tony Delroy on ABC Radio's Nightlife to explains how important it is to build a referral-based business. We often think about crisis as a negative – but it can also often be considered a positive. In this brain stretch episode, Stefan explores how business owners need to recognise the difference between leadership and management, especially in response to a crisis. As a leader, it is your responsibility to grow your resources, to understanding what is working, what is not working and to determine what you’re going to do about it. A manager’s role is to manage those resources in order to get better outcomes, improve output and increase efficiency and effectiveness. As a small business owner, you’re often required to wear both hats multiple times in a day, or even within an hour. As a leader, you need to recognise that there are two different mindsets you can have: a “cost of growth” mindset where you stay in maintenance mode, versus a “cost of opportunity” mindset where you’re in investment mode and actively looking to take your business forward. It is up to you as a business owner to ensure you lead your business towards growth. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Subscribe to our podcast: iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/business-benchmark-group-podcast/id1372652118?mt=2 Spotify: https://podcasters.spotify.com/podcast/5ZbuFOBaZ8YQ3eT1u3Y14R SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/businessbenchmarkgroup iHeartRadio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-Business-Benchmark-29372537/ Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/business-benchmark-group-podcast PodBean: https://www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/yi4rd-6bc65/Business-Benchmark-Group-Podcast ACast: https://acast.com/businessbenchmarkgroup

When it comes to building your competitive advantage, it all comes back to the concept of "Hero or Guide". This means that when you make the customers the hero of the story - by understanding their wants, needs and motivations and focusing on how to better serve them - this will inevitably mean that you will be able to innovate and serve your customers better than your competitors. Chris Galea's story as a business owner is an incredibly interesting and eventful ride. He purchased Polyshine - suppliers of polishing compound for the manufacturing industry - in 2008 and by 2010, he was down to his last $1,000 in the bank and was on his way to Singapore to do a deal that HAD to work, otherwise he and his business were in dire straits. Unfortunately, that meeting fell through! He was "stood up" and had no other options on the table, and was staring down the failure of his business after years of hard work. However, without giving away more of his story, through tenacity and persistence, it was this same trip that turned around his fortunes completely. In the years since, he has built a very strong reputation of the business internationally and taken advantage of some amazing opportunities and his business has flourished ever since. This is a must-listen to episode for business owners who have ridden all the ups and downs of life as a business owner. How do you outplay and outlast in the game of business? How do you outlast your head trash - your mental fatigue that says that you can't do something? Stefan explores how to create stamina in today's brain-stretch episode of our podcast. When you give up on something and never complete it - it's a missed opportunity and helps create a pattern in your life of a person who just never finishes things. Life is a pattern - the last 5 years are not much different to the 5 years before that. And the next 5 years will be the same unless you create new patterns so you can outlast the mental fatigue that gets in the way of stamina. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Need a business coach? Rob and Rose Seymour are the owners of a unique business - PureProtect. They are specialists in Mould, Damp, Water Damage and Indoor Air Quality and deliver hygiene and infection control solutions to industries where health and safety are paramount. They operate as mould re-mediators, licensed builders and fix buildings and homes with mould damage. They reveal how they have been able to achieve extraordinary growth, particularly over the previous 12 months, and go into detail about what changes they needed to make personally, and as a business, to achieve that growth. One point to note is the enormous benefit that PureProtect has experienced since they began charging for quotes, rather than doing them for free. The flow-on effects throughout the business have been remarkable. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Need a business coach? Get in touch with Business Benchmark Group!
