When do you feel manly? When do you feel not at all manly? Is "manliness" even something worth pursuing? Join Tom, Ryan, and Jacob for a return to one of our "classic" episodes in which we discuss opening pickle jars, killing cockroaches, camping out, working out, owning a home, and so much more on this simultaneously shallow and deep topic of manliness. We also dive into the deep end and discuss childhood wounds from PE and exclusions from men's events -- things that affected our budding sense of masculine belonging. Finally, we can't help ourselves from diving into a little book that's made the rounds in Christian men's circles ... for better or worse or maybe a little of both ... Wild at Heart. How does "manliness" differ from "masculinity," and what examples from Scripture can we point to and lean on as we pursue healthy masculinity? ANNOUNCEMENT We're launching a brand new monthly BOOK CLUB for our $15/mo Patreon supporters! We're reading The Velvet Rage for October. If you're already signed up for this tier, get to reading! And if you still wish to join the fun, there's still plenty of time to become a patron today. Bill Henson of Lead Them Home, Posture Shift, and Guiding Families joins Tom, Ryan, and Dean for a special guest discussion on loving LGBT+ people – both inside and outside the Church. How do we better understand LGBT-identifying people or those who experience same-sex attraction (SSA), and how do we love them well? We learn some of Bill's story from a business background to full-time LGBT+ outreach and ministry as he tells us about LTH, including the origin story (and challenges) of the name. He also shares why LTH settled on using "LGBT+" in their messaging, as opposed to "LGBTQ+" or any SSA-related terminology. Tom and Dean jump in with some of their own stories from attending and participating in LTH's Posture Shift events. Finally, Bill talks to us about justice initiatives and why justice should be an important issue for the Church. It only took us 64 episodes to talk about celibacy! Join Tom, Ryan, and Jacob for a discussion on sex, singleness, marriage, healthy sexuality, and this mystical notion of "calling." How many guys in our YOBBERS group feel "called to celibacy"? We dive into our very scientific poll results and answer the question ourselves. We also look to Scripture to round out our celibacy discussion: from Genesis (what does it mean for man to be "alone"?) to Jesus' bluntness on marriage and eunuchs to Paul's charge for singleness, along with his (and our) thoughts on those "burning with passion." We're talking about "the talk"! You know, "The Birds and the Bees" (whatever that even means). Join Tom, Ryan, and Jacob for a trip down memory lane as we recount our memories (or lacks thereof) involving the sex talk with our parents, along with sex education at our schools. How many folks do, in fact, actually receive the sex talk as a kid? Our very scientific poll results from our secret YOBBERS group may surprise you. We also zoom out for a broader view of sex: how did our family upbringing and culture surrounding sex affect our thoughts and feelings on sex today? And what do we think of God's creating of sex? We've written over 300 blogs here at YOB since 2015, and we gathered four of our site's authors to discuss our favorite ones -- recorded in front of a couple dozen people, no less. That's right, it's our first-ever LIVE recorded podcast with a digital audience! We invited our Patreon supporters on Facebook to watch and participate in the discussion with comments and questions for this episode's cast: Tom, Ryan, Dean, and Matt. It's a real "Avengers" gathering as each of us reads our personal favorite blog for the cast and YOBBERS to discuss. We also mention our blogs that have garnered the most views these last four years, and Tom and Matt share lots of fun-loving "big brother" moments together. Have you ever felt lonely within your sexuality? Do you choose loneliness or does loneliness choose you? Extroverted or introverted, do you embrace regular solitude, treating it as a spiritual practice? Join Tom, Ryan, and Jacob for a discussion on the divergence of loneliness and solitude. We talk about the healthy and not-so-healthy ways we cope with loneliness and how we seek out solitude. Additionally, we talk about the dynamic of living alone or with others as single gay/SSA men, forecasting our living situations for the decades to come. We also dive into Tom's Valentine's Day solo excursion to a brand new Enneagram-centric photo studio. Because of course he did. We hope you enjoy our latest episode: LONELINESS V. SOLITUDE! What led to your having gay sex for the first time? Can you separate the physical from the emotional in gay sex? How many times have you had gay sex, and would you consider yourself a sex addict? It's a throwback episode with three of our original YOB cofounders: Tom, Dean, and Matt. We talk with Matt about his journey and struggles with gay sex and hookups. It's a raw, courageous chronicling of his story as a pastor's kid – a story still being written to this day. We also catch up with Dean and Matt from the last year or so, including Dean's recent exploits to Canada (and questionable Canadian accent) and Matt's sarcastic sense of humor (or actual disappointment) with Tom. We’re back to producing two podcast episodes per month all year long, and we hope you enjoy our latest "classic episode" below! We can only do what we do because of our 180+ patrons on Patreon. Do we talk about pornography too much as the Church or not nearly enough? Do we "talk about talking about" pornography or do we actually talk about it? Pornography is more accessible than ever before and, increasingly, more aggressive. It's a struggle and an addiction that has reached and claimed all people: gay, straight, men, and women. Join Tom, Ryan, and Jacob as we take a deep dive into the science and story of pornography. It's one of our classic episodes that we're reopening in a new way. Beyond our discussion on porn, hear about Ryan and Jacob's adventures in the "City of Forts" as well as the notion of our one day recording a podcast in . . . In the spirit of resolutions, self-improvement, and growth in this new year, we're talking about mentors: those wise, sage-like figures who guide us through this life. Tom, Ryan, and Jacob talk about their favorite mentors in books and movies, sharing some of their own mentorship experiences from years past. What qualities do all these figures share in common? We also discuss the concept of mentoring a new generation -- including whether we feel we're even capable of such a thing. It's an undoubtedly difficult season for many in our community, and we talk about singleness during the holidays: the disconnect, the loneliness, and the finding of hope and joy when hope and joy may feel so far away. Tom, Ryan, and Jacob share their stories of holidays past and present, answering some listener questions along the way, including the concept of spending the holidays with chosen family versus blood family, and whether we've ever been asked if we've found that "special lady" yet. We also talk to Jacob about his reaction to our last episode in which we featured the story of his coming out to his older brother, Nate. And since it's Christmas, Tom hands out some specially themed "love language presents" to his dear brothers. They're sure to enjoy them this Christmas. It's our year-ending, decade-ending, holiday-themed extravaganza of a podcast! Jacob's older brother, Nate, joins us for a deep-dive into their relationship: how Jacob came out to his brother, Nate's reaction as a straight guy, their parents' dynamic, and their respective struggles with pornography. Their "origin story" is a cinematic storytelling session full of laughs and tearful takes alike. Beyond learning their brotherly bond, we get to know Nate (including his personality styles and love languages), uncover Nate's friendship with Tom, and partake in a "brotherly bridge" all about capris. Yes, capris -- the pant. Nate also offers to answer any questions from the straight male perspective: just use #AskStraightNate on Twitter! For better or worse, we all start with families of origin. But what of this concept of families of choice? A chosen family that goes beyond blood and DNA? Beyond our awesome conversation on chosen family, it's a special episode for other reasons: our first episode back in the "Jewel of the Blue Ridge" in over a year! We're diving deeper into emotional attachment with special guest, Taylor Zimmerman! Taylor's blogged at Spiritual Friendship and spoken at Revoice. He's a University of Chicago student currently pursuing his third (3rd!) master's degree with interests in philosophy of religion, theology, and psychoanalysis — and how they all come together. Taylor talks to us about attachment theory and the four attachment styles: secure, ambivalent-preoccupied, dismissing-avoidant, and fearful-avoidant. It's the deepest we've ever doven on this topic, a fascinating psychological exploration into why we attach to other men the ways we do as gay/SSA (same-sex attracted) men, sharing our relational stories along the way. We also close the episode talking about arousal we may experience when attaching to those we love and what it means for the friendship. Additionally, Tom, Ryan, and Jacob catch up on the last month! Ryan rode a train to Connecticut, Jacob rode a boat in Alaska, and Tom continued living out of his car while shedding pink calamine scales. We also share our "triumphant tidbits" involving vacation styles (chill or action-packed?) and the last times we felt mighty. Finally, Jacob gets a special surprise in the form of a knock at his door that you won't want to miss. We're back! After a brief summer hiatus, we return with our landmark fiftieth episode. Join Tom, Ryan, and Jacob sharing stories of emotional attachment: the good ways we attach to other men, and the not-so-good ways we attach. We open the episode by catching up on our summer trips and activities, and Tom gives some clarifications from our previous episode on "Letting Go." We also have our "manly morsel" segment (it's always been called that), talking about Jacob's shame of Grubhub and what Ryan should do on his upcoming long train ride. We then dive into our discussion on emotional attachment. It's a callback to a previous episode on emotional dependency (or "emodep," though Ryan doesn't exactly like that nickname). We differentiate between "dependency" and "attachment" and share both our positive and negative experiences in relationship with other men. Intimacy is scary, and intimacy is vulnerable. Intimacy can be shared or rejected. Intimacy is special and sacred, and intimacy is everyday. Intimacy is sexual and emotional, physical and spiritual. Join Tom, Ryan, and Jacob in the first of a two-part deep dive into intimacy. The brothers define intimacy, likening it to a fire, discussing the differences and nuances between intimacy and vulnerability. They also talk about their first forays into intimacy many years ago and what the cornerstone of their most intimate relationships has been. The episode opens with some banter about last month's #WeirdJesus episode, along with some "brother beats" on fasting for Lent and something called the "heart-f***"?? Many SSA/LGBT+ people struggle to find inclusion in the church — a safe place at least, and a nurturing place at best. This episode, we bring a very special guest onto the show. His name is Matt, who among other claims to fame (which we waste little time diving into), also pastors at Ryan's church and oversees Ryan's ministry to non-straight people, Intersect. We dive into their ministry relationship and overarching friendship, also discussing with Dean issues of sexuality, singleness, safety, and nurture of sexual minorities in the church. And we also laugh a lot about Matt's #WeirdJesus voice. It's a big episode. You can listen to plenty of bonus content and bloopers from this episode on the upcoming episode of our second (secret) podcast, The YOBaLOGUE! Is self-care selfish? How do we commit to healthy practices across all areas of our lives, not just physical ones, as men? Join Tom, Ryan, and Dean for a healthy discussion on self-care to start the new year! We talk about new year resolutions, one-word themes, and bring back good ole SPERM counts (spiritual, physical, emotional, relational, mental) for checking in with one another. There's a lot of diversity in the room as we talk about what good self-care means to each of us. We also add another letter to our SPERM count acronym and talk about what good sexual health looks like as men. We continue our new intro segment, "The Brother Beat," in which Dean brings a meaningful beat about corporate worship, and Ryan, a slightly less serious one about our favorite jokes. You can listen to Tom's "PG-15" beat on the upcoming episode of our bonus podcast, The YOBaLOGUE! We also make a startling revelation about the viral "Vintage Jesus" videos from many years past. We meet Kevin to start the show, and we continue our new intro segment: "The Brother Beat." On a physical level and an emotional level, what does it mean to possess a healthy male body image? And how do our sexualities tie into our body image? How have our culture -- and we ourselves -- understood and expressed issues of sexuality across the generations? Join Tom, Ryan, and Marshall for a conversation on these varying generational perspectives: Tom and Ryan as millennials and Marshall as a baby boomer. We discuss how the generations have addressed sexuality and "coming out" over the decades, accessibility to pornography and promiscuous outlets, the "gay" identity and male-on-male cuddling, and the biggest thing in culture we'd like to see change with the next generation. Why do we choose a traditional, "Side B" sexual ethic as men who follow Jesus? Do we choose this life solely for our convictions or in spite of them? Do we live out a gay/SSA celibate life with joy or in angst and suffering? Tom welcomes Ryan and Matt for a discussion on why we're Side B, as opposed to "Side A" (gay-affirming), and where these labels even come from. We include some formerly Side A perspectives within our community and dive into the challenges we face as gay/SSA men of faith. We also theorize on the percentage of Side B believers who suffer from internalized homophobia. #hottake Additionally, we talk about our recent authors' retreat, our new bonus podcast, longboarding, the rains and hail of New Mexico, and of course some #YOBfashion with our resident style-master general, Matt.
