A podcast for the modern day Asian American woman hosted by Melody Cheng, Helen Wu, & Janet Wang. It's no secret that Asian women are lacking in almost all media outlets, and those who are present mostly represent the fashion, beauty, or blogging industries. This month, we are focused on the topic of careers and entrepreneurship. To find a career that is the right fit, it’s important to not only understand WHAT we want but WHO we are - what are we good at? Understanding our personal strengths, weaknesses, and work values is not a one-time exercise. It requires a lot of patience, dedication, and active energy to understand ourselves, and also account for all the ways in which we change over the span of our working years. To prepare for this episode, we each took a number of evaluation tests that measure our skills, personality preferences, and work values. We’ll talk about everything from our inductive reasoning skills to structural visualization skills to dominance vs. influence and end with a fun Buzzfeed quiz to evaluate what career we should each be in. Take the quizzes & follow along in our conversation as we dissect our results! For this month’s theme of Careers and Entrepreneurship, we bring on a good friend and serial entrepreneur, Mylen Yamamoto Tansingco!! She has a background in education and taught media at the college level while starting her own media company, where she produced digital videos on the side. Now, she runs a full-fledged talent company and manages some familiar faces in the Asian American digital world. On top of that, she also started Cropsticks, a sustainable goods company that was featured on Shark Tank! “That’s what you do as an entrepreneur, you get kicked down and you get rejected too, but you gotta get back up and you gotta get back into it. Today we’re in over 250 restaurants, we’re in Disneyland, we’re in Hawaiian Airlines, we’re in the Four Seasons.” Tune in to hear Mylen's journey in creating and maintaining two successful companies, and how she's learning to pivot during COVID. Although the three of us now work on AsianBossGirl full time, we all have had experience working in corporate. From that obnoxious coworker who loved hearing the sound of his own voice, to horrible bosses that lacked a single empathetic bone in his/her body, to comments from coworkers about race and an unnerving correlation with some aspect of your work. As kids, we would make up scary stories to tell our friends, but now as adults, we STILL have scary stories to tell – only this time, they’re 100% real, and 100% scary, if not more. In line with this month’s theme of entrepreneurship and careers, we take a walk down memory lane and recount some of the horrific instances we experienced while working our past jobs. 2020 is proving to be a challenge. On a larger scale, the world is facing a global pandemic that is trickling down and unveiling an ugly side to our country. All of these things happening in the world, whether we want to admit or not, affect all of us on an individual level. Through our conversations with each other & with our loved ones, we realize there also exists a feeling of guilt. Guilt that tells us that we don’t “deserve” to feel sad or down because “someone else is going through something worse”. But now is not the time to ignore the voice in your head that separates your soul from your ego. With all the time we’re spending at home, battling safety and our own sanity, it has become increasingly important to learn to listen to ourselves -- all parts of ourselves – the bright AND the dreary. Because only then- can we learn to bring light into a world that otherwise feels dim. Today, we’re discussing how we’re finding positivity & hope during the time. Please let us know how you're finding hope in our comments below! This year's August 18th marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, which guaranteed and protected women’s constitutional right to vote. As Asian American women, however, this celebration was a little different for us. The 19th amendment gave women the right to vote, but women of color were still marginalized under this law. The fight for voting rights for women of color continued for many years after 1920, and it wasn't until the Voting Rights Act in 1965 that racial discrimination was finally prohibited in voting. These series of events emphasize how powerful, sought after, and precious the right to vote is. Voting is the single most direct expression of how we want the social constructs of our society to be managed. Today's episode is dedicated to all the women who have fought, progressed, and won us the opportunity to exercise one of our most basic civic rights - the right to vote! We talk about our earliest memories of the concept of voting (does anyone remember high school superlatives, homecoming court, or student government?), if voting was ever discussed within our Chinese/Taiwanese households, our first times voting, the resources we used, and what voting means to us now. The Enneagram is a personality model made up of 9 types. We have had a couple of episodes in which we analyze each other’s personalities - there was Episode 14 where we discussed each of our horoscopes and zodiac signs, and Episode 17 which focused on our Meyers Briggs personality types. Our listeners have requested that we also dedicate an episode to the Enneagram - so here it is! We review each of our results, discuss how accurate we think this test is, what shocked us the most about our results, and get into some very deep and personal analyses about our fears and values. Have you taken the Enneagram test? Share your results with us in the comments below! This episode was edited by Michelle Hsieh.

We have been friends for over 5 years now (working together for 3 of those years) - we've recorded over 70 episodes together, spent many late nights meeting for both work and play, exchange messages on the daily (if not hourly), and have gone on multiple international trips together. But how well do we really know each other? Listen and find out as we guess each other's answers to questions about our careers, love and sex, friends and family, childhood, favorite foods, and some juicy random questions (the answers to which you may not want to know, like... who doesn't flush their toilet paper down the toilet?? haha). If you liked what you heard, leave a 🧻 emoji in the comments. This episode was edited by Michelle Hsieh.

This past week, you may have noticed that we held back our regularly scheduled content to focus on the Black Lives Matter movement. To us, nothing is more important than life itself, and when our black and brown brothers and sisters have lost too many of their lives to the injustices built into America’s systems, we need to pause and reflect on how we, as Asian Americans, can do our part to help. We are outraged at the death of George Floyd, Breona Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and so many more unarmed black people whose names are not currently in the news. We are outraged at the persistence of police brutality, at the treatment of protestors, at white privilege, at systemic racism, and at our president. We are donating, e-mailing representatives, using our voice amongst our spheres of influence, and encouraging the people we know to do the same. So we hope that with this episode, we can continue to discuss, listen and learn from one another. Comment below with stories of the conversations that you're having with your loved ones. What was the most difficult part of the conversation? What would be helpful to hear from another ABG in the community? Share with us also any resources that you've found helpful to you. *We will be donating a portion of the ad revenue generated from this episode to various organizations supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. This episode comes at the cusp of May and June - one month celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage, and the other, LGBTQI with Pride month. Identity plays such a big role in a person’s life, and there are so many facets to it. In this episode, we explore sexual orientation, specifically, homosexuality, and the nuances of what that means when you’re Asian American. Our two guests are very good friends of ours and after having many of these types of conversations offline, we are so happy to offer our platform for them to share their stories. Anna Lee is a very close friend of Mel's who resides in San Francisco where she works at Facebook as a Business Lead for Entertainment. Anna goes by the pronouns of she/her and identifies as queer. Justin Rodjanapanyakul is a close friend of all 3 of ours (you might recognize him in some of our Instagram posts where he has graciously offered his photography skills). Justin is based in the Los Angeles area where he is a musician and YouTuber, known as one half of the duo, JRodTwins. Justin goes by the pronouns he/his and his sexual orientation is gay. This Hero Story is brought to you by McDonald's. With all that is happening with the pandemic, McDonald's is putting forward the effort to showcase the many kinds of heroes in the Asian Pacific American community. McDonald's desire to uplift and highlight community heroes is guided by the belief that we are all in this together, and they are committed to caring for local heroes who are caring for our country. COVID19 has profoundly impacted the world. We’ve all had to adjust to a new normal, and that new normal has looked different for everyone. In recent episodes, we shared how COVID19 has impacted our personal lives, and our experiences have reflected that of many individuals who are adjusting to the stay-at-home order. In this bonus episode, we want to recognize and honor a local community hero who is working directly on the frontlines. Today, we have Michelle Acob, a bedside and charge nurse at the Regional Medical Center of San Jose - a trauma hospital. Michelle works in one of Santa Clara County’s first Covid-19 units starting in March 2020. As a charge and infection prevention nurse, she oversees the entire Covid-19 unit and is in control of bedding patients and guiding 10-12 nurses with their assigned patient loads. We are so honored to have Michelle here to share her story and experiences during this unprecedented period of our lives. This episode edited by Michelle Hsieh. Drushti was born in India and came to the US when she was 5 years old. She currently works as a management consultant for EY (Helen’s old company!) in their Change Management practice. Drushti is also one of Janet's best and closest friends. We talk about her dating experiences, her journey with her career, and share various aspects of her Asian American, specifically, Indian American, upbringing. Last episode, we kicked off APAHM 2020 with a conversation about our experiences growing up in an Asian household. In this episode, we continue the conversation, reflecting more on our interactions with friends, our communities, and experiences in grade school and throughout college - we chat about many of the nuanced aspects of growing up ethnically Asian in America. Did we ever feel ashamed of our identities? What are we most proud of about our culture? How have these experiences impacted our current identities? May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, APAHM for short! During this month, we celebrate the cultures, traditions, and history of AAPI’s in the United States. This country is very much shaped by the stories of immigrants from Asia and the Pacific and the native people of the Pacific Islands. Today, we will be sharing with you our personal stories as Asian American women -- the traditions and foods we remember from our childhood, where we grew up, what it was like to visit "the motherland", and how these experiences have impacted our journey with shaping our own cultural identity. ABG is officially in season 6! With the stay-at-home order still in place, we continue to record from each of our own homes. By now, we are a little more settled into this new, temporary normal of social distancing, but it can be challenging to cope with the inevitable loneliness. In collaboration with Bumble, this episode is dedicated to ways we are dealing with loneliness and how we are connecting with others through online apps. We discuss profile creation and evaluation tactics (we talk about wanting a horoscope filter, which you can actually find in the settings on your Bumble app!); how to start a conversation; and for those listeners like Helen who aren't on the search for a Boo anymore, our experiences with Bumble BFF (there's an option to hide date mode for users who are looking to make friends/network). We also appreciate that Bumble's priority is safety, and creating an inclusive/safe environment for it's users to make connections. Mental health is a topic that we get many messages about from our listeners. It’s a sensitive and complicated topic, and especially with all the recent world events that have occurred, we thought now is the right time to take a deeper dive into this topic. Back in July 2019, we released Episode 44: Mental Health with Christine Chen wherein our good friend shared her personal experience with clinical depression. Today, we wanted to offer a different perspective on the topic by bringing in Haesue Jo, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in the Bay Area, California. Haesue has 7 years of experience as a mental health professional, including working with Asian-American youth, families, and adults, given her firsthand experience dealing with generational and cultural differences in her own family. Haesue is also the Clinical Support Lead at BetterHelp, the largest online counseling platform worldwide. You can learn more about Haesue at betterhelp.com/haesue-jo. We are back with season 6! We've kicked off many seasons before, but this is a significant one for us. This is the first time that the 3 of us no longer hold full-time positions at a company other than AsianBossGirl. It has been an incredibly dynamic last couple of weeks for us personally at ABG, and for the world at large. So, even though we are off season, we wanted to check in with you all and share a special episode to talk about how we are personally experiencing the world-wide COVID-19 incident, in hopes that it might help some of you out there feel more connected, prompt conversations with your personal circles, or even just offer a brief moment of reprieve from your new daily routine. We hope you are all keeping safe, informed, and taking care of yourselves mentally, physically, and emotionally. Thank you to those who are battling this pandemic on the frontlines and allowing most of us to remain safely at home. It’s an age old point of contention, discussion, and often times, frustration - the differences between men and women, and of course nowadays with all the variations of gender identity, the complexity continues to grow - just how different is the opposite sex (or sexes)? Are men (and all those who identify as male) really from Mars, and women (and all those who identify as female) really from Venus? Today we have invited 2 very special ABB guests (Mike Bow & Jason Rodjanapanyakul to explore just how different (or similar) ABGs and ABBs really are. This will be an open forum and a safe space to ask each other ANY and ALL questions we may have about the opposite sex. Take a listen to our season finale & let us know what you think! Happy Thursday and hope you all enjoyed our first Q&A episode of the season last week! We had so many questions leftover that we decided to run a part II for y'all. This time around, we talk about the pros and cons of making a career switch, discuss finances (Is it worth it to have a car? What are our personal finance goals? Why is commingling such a weird word?), discuss our personal styles, the challenges we've faced in our 20s and 30s, and more. One of the best parts about running a podcast is being able to connect with you all through formats like the Q&A. This episode is dedicated to our collective review of 2019 for ABG (learn how we're growing our business, every step of the way!), followed by our personal reflections of 2019. Last year around this time, we reflected on 2018 and discussed our goals for 2019 (check out Episode 34!). Now that we’ve reached the end of 2019 (and survived it) we go back to the resolutions we set at the beginning of 2019 to see how we’ve tracked against those goals. We discuss our continued focus on mental health and self-awareness, our revelations about what defines success for us, habits we wish to break -- but also, answer questions like, did Mel find love? How did dry Janet do? Did Helen achieve her pull-up?! End of year reflections can be both daunting and energizing -- listen is in as we celebrate the great moments and reluctantly recall the not-so-great. Leave us a comment with your highs and lows of 2019! In this week's episode, we explore the topic of Chinese medicine, specifically as it relates to women's health. Alternative medicine has become a rather popular topic in recent times, and a large aspect of these alternative approaches like acupuncture, cupping, and herbs, come from the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine. We sit down with local Santa Monica Oriental Medicine practitioner, Dr. Helena Zhang, to discuss how she got involved with this practice, the differences between Western and Chinese medicine approaches, and how Chinese medicine can be applied for women's health. Love takes patience, compassion, and courage. Fairytales paint a story of “love at first sight” that leads to a rainbow and butterfly filled path to wedding bells and a white picket fence home. Marriage - who we choose as our life partner and when we are ready to make that commitment - is an incredibly important, some say the MOST important, decision of our lives. We touched (pun intended) on sex a bit in Season 1 on Episode 5: 20 Something Girls vs. 30 Something Women (Part II Sex & Dating), but this time we go deep (pun was not intended, but now it is). From school provided sex-ed courses to internet chats to porn, our introductions to and understandings of sex were pretty fragmented and incomplete when we were younger. Mental Health is a topic that we frequently receive requests to talk about on this podcast. As Asian Americans, mental health is, without question, a taboo topic and one that is often dismissed and/or feared. Discussions about health and wellness are on the rise, and as Asian American women, most of us experience a particular shared set of stressors -- dealing with external factors such as our careers and our families, and internalized factors, like telling ourselves that we’re not “good enough”. In this episode, we invite our very good friend and fellow podcaster boss girl, Christine Chen to the table! Christine has been incredibly brave and open in discussing her experience with clinical depression. Recognizing that mental health encompasses a wide spectrum - from managing day-to-day stress to dealing with anxiety and clinical depression - we discuss our varying personal perspectives and experiences. We want to emphasize that we are not healthcare professionals and that this episode is purely representative of our personal experiences and points of view. Some call it post grad life, others call it the Grey Zone. Whatever you call it, it’s an unpredictable time in your life that you feel you aren't “prepared” for; the feeling of being in a slump, that your life can (and should) turn at any point. For us, this is the moment when self-doubt is the highest, when we start to question whether or not we are truly happy with what we have.     The older that we get, the more we realize that the Grey Zone actually extends far beyond that initial bout of freedom post-grad. These periods of uncertainty that often prompt confusion & self doubt actually occur many times throughout life - whether it’s a decade into your career, entering marriage, building a family, whatever it may be.   Listen in as we chat about the different Grey Zone periods we've experienced, and yes - that we're currently still experiencing! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/message

Ah.. the ever continuous discussion of dating (or, lack thereof). For anyone else in their post-collegiate, 30s+ stage in life, this one’s for you! Mel and Janet share their recent date experiences, how to maturely and respectfully 'reject' someone, qualities we gauge in finding a good partner (including wanting to jump them), and Helen talks through how to manage a busy schedule while finding time to spend with her s/o. Imposter Syndrome - a state of insecurity & self doubt about one’s ability and/or achievements, believing they are due to luck or having successfully deceived others into thinking they are smarter or more capable than they really are. It’s a prevalent feeling (especially amongst women); this fear of being exposed as a “fraud”.  As women, and more specifically, as Asian women, the three of us have had several episodes where we've felt held back by crippling thoughts of not being enough. Whether it's because we said something 'dumb', because we sit in board rooms where no one else looks like us, because we don't feel cultured or worldly enough -- whatever it is, we (sometimes) leave the possibility of success to others. She shares what it's like being an ivy league student balancing work and dating, her unique family experience and its effects on her cultural identity, and being a badass boss while still experiencing imposter syndrome. Please join us in this episode as we chat with Nadya! UPDATE: Please refer to Episode 73 in which we address some new events surrounding Nadya. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/message

Anddddd....we're back! Season 4, we out here! Returning with an intimate episode where we go through the exercise brought to fame by NY Times Article "The 36 Questions That Lead to Love" by Daniel Jones. The activity is based on psychology studies that explore increasing intimacy between strangers by having them ask each other a specific series of personal questions - three sets of twelve questions, each set more intensely personal than the previous set. The premise is that mutual vulnerability creates connection and closeness. Listen in as we ask each other these personal questions, and share our intimate answers. We're also trying out something new - a segment called "Dear ABG" where we address listener questions. Leave a voicemail with your questions or a shout out to a friend at (213) 262 - 8776. We're excited to be back and can't wait to hear from you! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/message

It’s been such an amazing journey of shared stories and building a small ABG/ABB community with y’all. As we near the end of the first month of 2019, we reflect on our 2018 conclusions, touch upon our 2019 resolutions, and cringe/celebrate how we’ve been tracking on those #goals/#aims/#focuses to date. Join us as we talk about our intentions for the rest of the year: our shift in focus towards mental health, being more open to romance, a dry Janet, continuing to support other Asian women in the areas they excel at, becoming a better friend, and plans for ABG next season. We’ve already helped Janet w/ one of her focuses of the year – becoming a yogi! [jk, but she CAN do a free standing headstand now  - WOW!!] We are taking a short break to get them vital juices flowing again to bring new energy and a season full of fresh, kick-ass content for y’all. We’ll continue to stay connected via the Internets. Keep an eye out for MERCH!! And if you’re in the LA area this weekend, hope to see you at our LIVE meet up this Saturday, 2/2 at 18 Social in DTLA!! Please RSVP in the link in our IG bio if you haven’t already ;) --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/message

Whether you’re still in college and applying for an apartment for the first time, 27 and figuring your shit out after that quarter life crisis, OR in your 30’s and you’re starting a family...we’re constantly trying to master the art of adulting.  In this episode, we want to talk about the moments we realize we’re actually becoming an adult-from the times we'd rather play board games than go to the club, to the times we shell out extra money for kitchen gadgets instead of fast food. Whether we like it or not, we’re growing up aka adulting. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/message
