How to remain biblical in a liberal world

All Episodes

How in the world can a typewriter collector and repairman lead to such a thought provoking life? As I sit down with Charles Justice, one of my most favorite people on this planet, I found out what makes this man tick. I couldn't help to investigate what drives him to excellence as he presses beyond his limitations to create his own journey. Not many of us think about leaving a body of work behind for the next generation. So in order to do this we talked about effectiveness vs our knowledge that is untested. Covering topics from Hollywood controlling the narrative of our worldview to strategies on how to protect your creativity from the daily grind. This might be the conversation you’re needing to start the new year. Enjoy!

Meet my very good friend and brother Willy Peters, a Dutchman, who pulled his family out of the Mennonite faith in search of the true message that Jesus Christ preached. So I got to roll with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and 2019 Austin Open Champion, Gabe Hernandez. While I was in Lubbock Texas I took the opportunity to set up my mics at his gym (Base Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) and start up a conversation about how this sport is so good for the human spirit. We agreed on the benefits we gain when we train our minds to outlast our bodies. But what first caught my attention, and why I wanted to do this podcast, was the culture this dude has built within his gym. I asked him to give us advice for every belt color he experienced so that there is something in it for all of us. My hope for this podcast is to expose more people to the advantages that this gentle art has to offer. So if life is paralyzing you, go to your local gym, and keep that vessel movin’ with BJJ! Don’t quit, don’t lose confidence! Oss!

This one is for my creative souls out there who are still on your journey to finding your voice! If I ever had a long lost twin from birth it would be this dude, producer, writer, artist, thinker, and Renaissance man, Scott Faris. Our conversation carried us to various topics that encompass our creative worldview. We spoke on how our limitations open up new creative territory in our minds. You might be inspired to hear how two analog men survived the digital revolution and how understanding both eras comes with some privileges. We also hit some hot buttons like how a child’s creativity is squashed by today’s “scoreboard mentality” we see in our educational system. But we eventually land the plane by cautioning creatives how dangerous it can be to never come back to reality and "edit life". It was such a rich conversation and I hope you guys enjoy this podcast as much as I did.

I flew to Atlanta and had a great conversation with author and public speaker Dr. Mark Andrews, founder of Adoptive Family Resources (AFR).  I personally do not know anyone who has more insight on adoption than Dr. Andrews who has raised, with his wife Lisa, two beautiful children from India.  His story is so moving as we journey through topics such as finding your own faith apart from your parents, child anger, and how our privileged culture today is producing entitlement mentalities in foster care children. Our talk was thought provoking and beautiful, enjoy!

Pastor Ricky Garcia from Community Baptist Church in Victoria Texas and I just did a bonus episode for the underdog, the dark horse, the unsung pastor and those who have captured the beauty of attending a smaller church. When a pastor at a smaller church gets compared to the larger churches in his area, it can feel like we’re failing. We watch families walk in with expectations not being met leading to us walking out with discouragement. And it doesn’t help that there are hundreds, if not thousands of books, seminars, blogs, and podcasts on how to become a larger church. So here it is, a conversation about the advantages that only a small church can carry—advantages that might shock you. This episode answers many questions you have on what a biblical church is suppose to look like—revealing that there are a number of churches not doing it correctly. So if you’re a pastor, deacon or a church member who serves at a smaller church, be of good cheer, you just might be experiencing the Christian life you’ve read about in the Book of Acts. Enjoy!

I can’t tell you how amazing it was to sit, talk, and laugh with international recording artist Tammy Trent! You might have seen her grace the covers of many Christian magazines or speak about the loss of her husband on the 700 Club, but this podcast offers us the opportunity to hear how she has processed it all. We got to cover many topics, but if I could guess who might get the most out of this conversation, it would be those who have been struggling lately to find their joy in Christ! *Fist Bump*

Curtis Zachery, who penned Soul Rest, talks about the only Commandment that believers think is optional is "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.” This passive disobedience not only provokes anxiety and depression, but it makes a poor attempt to dismantle the works of Christ as well. I believe that dropping in on this conversation will bring you the rest that God intended for your life.  Book: Soul Rest by Curtis Zackery   Footnote: Go to peteorta.com and click on the 'Donate' tab to give $1 a month to support these conversations that are purposefully designed to contribute to your Christian walk.

You might know Jaci Velasquez from her spectacular music career or maybe you’ve even seen her on the silver screen, but I thought the world would really enjoy getting a little closer to the Jaci that I know and love. Although she’s racked up Grammy nominations and Platinum records, she would say that her greatest accomplishment is motherhood. We start off reminiscing about old times until she starts to open up about her perspective on raising an Autistic child and the family dynamics that come with it. It was as if she was walking me through a few pages of her new book When God Rescripts Your Life. Give this a listen, this episode is magnanimous!
