This multi-episode series is about the history of relations between the United States and the Middle East, including both US foreign policy and the Middle Eastern immigrant experience. In this episode, Jaye discusses the decline and fall of the Ottoman Empire, including World War I and the Sykes-Picot Agreement, which set into motion the partition of the Middle East after the war. CONTENT WARNING: The following episode involves discussion of crime, police brutality and bigotry, including physical violence, murder, and racism. Listener discretion is advised. In this commentary episode, Jaye shares her reaction to the events during the week of the 2020 Republican National Convention, including the shooting of Jacob Blake Jr. by police, and the shooting at the resulting Kenosha, WI protests, allegedly perpetrated by Kyle Rittenhouse. How did the police approach each of these incidents, and what do the differences say about the nature of police brutality and the police state in America? Jaye makes the case that the way the police, the Republican Party, and many right-wing voices discuss the terrorist attack committed at the Kenosha protests should give every American, regardless of race or ideology, pause. CONTENT WARNING: The following episode includes discussion of physical and sexual abuse, including the abuse of children. Listener discretion is advised. In this flashback bonus episode first released as a Patreon bonus episode in August 2018 originally entitled "Abuse: Endorsed by Scripture?," Jaye discusses the use of Romans 13:1-5, a passage in the Bible invoked by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the White House Press Secretary at the time, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, to justify the separation and detainment of families seeking asylum at the US-Mexico border. What does this Bible passage really mean - in a historical and contemporary context - if Sessions and Sanders are correct? Jaye outlines the danger of using religious passages to justify oppressive government actions. This episode also includes fresh new commentary that frames this episode in the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic and Black Lives Matter protests. CONTENT WARNING: The following episode involves discussion of crime, police brutality and bigotry, including physical violence, sexual assault, murder, racism, Islamophobia, homophobia and transphobia. Listener discretion is advised. In the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd at the hands of police, and the resulting Black Lives Matter uprisings and protests, there has been an ongoing national conversation regarding police brutality and race. In the final part of a two-episode series, Jaye discusses developments in policing that have increased the danger police pose to society, including the infiltration of police departments by white supremacists and police militarization. She also outlines some possible solutions that are intended to make all communities safer, from police reforms such as increased accountability and demilitarization, to police restructuring such as defunding the police and abolishing police. Why is even incremental change so difficult, and what does it truly mean to "defund" and "abolish" police? In the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd at the hands of police, and the resulting Black Lives Matter uprisings and protests, there has been an ongoing national conversation regarding police brutality and race. In Part 1 of a two-episode series, Jaye contends that to discuss police brutality in an honest way, we must discuss policing in America. What are some common hurdles to discussing the issue, and what are some important facts in regards to policing and race? Jaye also delves into the history of US policing, including why modern police departments were developed. Is the system truly broken, or working as intended? In the public release of February 2019's Patreon bonus episode, Jaye discusses the news story from January 2019 about the confrontation in Washington DC, between Catholic high school students from Northern Kentucky and a Native American elder. How does a seemingly straightforward news story, complete with video, morph into a controversy dividing society along the familiar lines of partisanship and race? Jaye happens to live in the same metropolitan area the school is located, and she gives her unique insight on the events and underlying issues, as well as the symbolism of the Make America Great Again hats worn by the students. For the public release, Jaye also provides an update of the incident, and reframes it in light of Black Lives Matter and America's current reckoning with its treatment of black and indigenous people of color (BIPOC). This multi-episode series is about the history of relations between the United States and the Middle East, including both US foreign policy and the Middle Eastern immigrant experience. In this episode, Jaye recounts the early history of relations between the United States and the Middle East, focusing on the Barbary Wars, and delves into early immigration to the US from the Middle East. What role did religion play in the acceptance of early Middle Eastern immigrants, and how did people of Middle Eastern descent become "white" in America? In the public release of the September 2019 Patreon Exclusive, Jaye discusses Donald Trump's "disloyalty" comments regarding Jewish Democrats. Why would Trump rely on an anti-Semitic trope while stating he is an ardent supporter of Israel? Jaye also outlines reasons why white evangelicals, who are overwhelmingly loyal to Donald Trump, are also ardent supporters of the state of Israel. How do their politics in regards to Israel mesh with their support of a president who tacitly gives cover to anti-Semitic white supremacists? Several regions around the globe have been battling the scourge of a novel coronavirus, a highly contagious virus that leads to an illness the World Health Organization has named COVID-19. The virus leads to mild symptoms, or even no symptoms, in most people, but can lead to serious complications in a small but significant percentage of people, in some cases leading to death. COVID-19 has arrived in an real way in the United States, with tens of thousands officially confirmed positive for coronavirus, and hundreds of deaths. Jaye reviews a brief timeline of the pandemic and the response of Donald Trump to the coronavirus threat in the US. Also, Jaye argues that the COVID-19 pandemic will significantly change America, and discusses a few possible futures, including reason for hope among the current wave of fear, uncertainty, darkness and despair. After a strong showing by US Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont in the early contests of the Democratic nomination season, former Vice-President Joe Biden has gained a great deal of momentum, starting in South Carolina and thru Super Tuesday. Is this a positive turn of events for the Democrats in terms of moving away from a democratic socialist as their standard-bearer, or is having a centrist candidate as the frontrunner a bad sign for the party's chances of beating Donald Trump in the general election? Jaye discusses the 2020 model of election forecaster Rachel Bitecofer, reasons behind Joe Biden's support among African-Americans, and why it is imperative that - regardless of ideology - the Democratic nominee must give voters, including those ideologically predisposed to vote for Democrats, a reason to vote *for* them, not simply that they are a superior alternative to Trump. The 2020 presidential nomination season is underway, and the Democratic race is heating up. As US Senator Bernie Sanders has received some early momentum, many Democrats, especially moderates, are concerned about Sanders, who is not a Democrat, and his democratic socialist ideology. Should Democrats be worried about the "socialist" label? Also, do Democrats have the right to feel entitled to votes from groups within their base, such as progressives and black Americans? This is the last podcast episode under the Flying Machine banner, as Flying Machine is shutting down. The experience has been wonderful, and it was an honor to be in community with other amazing content creators. Over time, we became not only fellow creatives, but also friends. Special thank you to our dear leaders, Malcolm & Justin, for the amazing network and community they built and cultivated, and allowing me to be a part of it. CONTENT WARNING - This episode includes discussion of mature themes, including illicit drug use, prescription drug abuse, and both legal and illicit drug addiction. Listener discretion is advised. In the final installment of America's Drug War, Jaye discusses recent trends in the American drug landscape, including cannabis decriminalization and legalization in several US states, and the opioid epidemic sweeping suburbs and rural areas. How did the War on Drugs, particularly its focus on the "usual suspects," lead to the opioid crisis? Will cannabis be legalized on a federal level, and should harder drugs also be legalized? CONTENT WARNING - This episode discusses mature themes, including detailed discussion of illicit drug use. Listener discretion is advised. In the penultimate installment of America's Drug War, President Ronald Reagan and his successors take the mantle of drug warrior in the 1980s and 1990s. Jaye discusses campaigns and programs designed to reduce drug use in children, such as Just Say No and DARE, as well as the crack epidemic of the 80s, and the shift to punitive measures that the federal government took to win the War on Drugs. Were these efforts successful - and what did "success" truly mean? CONTENT WARNING - The following episode discusses mature themes, including illicit drug use and political assassinations. Listener discretion is advised. In the third installment of America's War on Drugs, Richard Nixon makes good on his second chance at becoming president of the United States in 1968, instituting his "law and order" policies during his president, chief among them sweeping anti-drug policy. These policies concentrated mostly on cannabis and opiates such as heroin, but also overhauled the way the federal government addressed drugs. Jaye provides context to the America of the 1960s, and discusses Nixon's War on Drugs as key to his crusade to end the social and political change the 1960s represented. In the final installment of a two-part series about urban renewal, Jaye discusses contemporary urban renewal, particularly the impact of privatization on urban renewal efforts in America's impoverished inner city neighborhoods. Why have these neighborhoods persisted? Also, what efforts have federal, state and local governments, as well as corporations, made in revitalizing - or gentrifying - these neighborhoods, and have these efforts succeeded? Jaye discusses these approaches, and both the benefits and drawbacks of urban renewal efforts. In the wake of the recent mass shootings in El Paso, TX, Dayton, OH, and Gilroy, CA, Jaye discusses gun violence, including many of the root issues that contribute to the gun violence epidemic in the United States, and the importance of properly addressing these issues. She takes on white supremacy, misogyny, other right-wing extremist ideologies, and Donald Trump's failure to unqualifiably condemn white supremacy. Is gun control the answer to the scourge of mass shootings? Content Warning: This episode includes discussion of sexual violence, gun violence, suicide, and murder, including mass murder. In part 1 of a two-part series about urban renewal, Jaye talks about the history of America's urban slums. How did these poor, run-down neighborhoods develop in US cities, and how did these areas become associated with people of color, particularly black Americans? The history of Cincinnati's West End is discussed as an illustration of how segregated, impoverished neighborhoods developed over time, and how residents became vulnerable to the negative effects of urban renewal policies. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" is famous for several iconic statements, including the admonishment of "white moderates." But did you know that the "white moderates" Dr. King was referring to were specific local clergymen in Birmingham who had written an open letter opposing the protests he helped to organize? These clergy are dubbed "The Birmingham Eight." Who were these men? What did it mean for them to be "moderate," and how did they respond to Dr. King's letter? And what can this incident in American history teach us about allyship? As the myriad of Democratic presidential candidates with tons of ideas are hitting the debate circuit, Elle Riccardi from the podcast Short, Colorful + Loud joins Jaye to discuss political spectrums. What are the building blocks of political spectrums? Where did "left" and "right" come from? Are communism and fascism all that close to each other? Elle and Jaye discuss various kinds of political spectrums, including left-right, horseshoe theory, the political compass (including how they tested on it!) and more. They also discuss centrism, anarchy, and how the Overton Window can affect how we view what is "normal" in political discourse. In the aftermath of the US Supreme Court ruling effectively declaring political gerrymandering legal, Jaye discusses the challenges Democrats face in mitigating the damage of an increasingly right-leaning SCOTUS. In this episode, Jaye focuses on the novel Supreme Court plan touted by Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, which is intended to neutralize the ideological and partisan slant of the court. What are the pros and cons of the plan? Jaye makes the case that the challenges this Supreme Court plan would face reflect the issues the Democrats face in general as they attempt to gain ground lost to the Republican Party by taking the Court for granted. Jaye is joined by her husband Chuckles as they discuss free speech versus calls to violence and terrorism, as well as if Donald Trump's rhetoric and actions in support of gun control will upset his supporters enough to turn against him in 2020. Chuckles stans Candace Owens and sees her temporary ban on Twitter as an example of a conspiracy by the social media giant against conservative voices. Jaye points out that white supremacists run rampant on Twitter despite the ability to filter them out just like they filter out Islamic terror groups - because Twitter doesn't want to ban Republican politicians. CONTENT WARNING: Miscarriage, stillbirth, medical procedures, death, child molestation, sexual and physical violence With the proliferation of abortion bans passed into law in several states designed to trigger a US Supreme Court reversal of Roe v. Wade (1973), what are the real dangers of these laws? Jaye reconsiders her earlier position on fetal personhood and outlines her view regarding the tension between the rights of the woman versus the rights of the fetus. As several states are passing extremely restrictive anti-abortion laws, and civil rights are increasingly being denied to a number of groups in the United States, Jaye discusses the conservative evangelical Christianity that got us here. Is conservative evangelicalism "real Christianity" and why does the answer to that question matter? How does evangelicalism lead its adherents to support authoritarian, regressive, and cruel politicians and public policies? Jaye shares her personal experience in evangelical Christianity for first-person insight into the methods and teachings that lead evangelical Christians to extreme stances on issues that may have little to no basis in the Bible they claim is inerrant. Several Democratic candidates are running to be the party's nominee for President of the United States. Jaye believes it matters less which candidate becomes the Democratic nominee, but more what direction the Democratic Party will go in the 2020 election. Will they focus on recruiting Trump supporters, or convincing non-voters to go to the polls? Jaye argues that focusing on Trump supporters will guarantee a loss for the Democrats, and the best way forward in 2020 and beyond is to excite non-voters and turn out their base with a slate of common-sense progressive reforms. CONTENT WARNING: This episode includes discussion of transphobia, anti-LGBTQ bigotry and violence, depression and suicide. Listener discretion is advised. The relationship between the American church and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people has all too often been rocky, and conflict is inflamed by opposition by churches and Christian political institutions to equal rights for LGBTQ Americans. Opposition to equal rights for LGBTQ Americans is based on the belief among many Christian traditions, denominations, and sects that homosexuality and transgender identity are morally wrong, based on how they interpret a handful of Bible verses. In Part II of a two-part series, Jaye focuses on the non-affirming position of many Christian institutions as it relates to gender identity. She makes the argument that while the non-affirming position on homosexuality is not conclusively supported by the Bible, non-affirming stances in regards to gender identity have even *less* biblical support. These positions also tend to conflate sex and gender, as well as sexual orientation and gender identity. Jaye discusses the immense harm done to transgender and non-binary people by non-affirming positions, many of which are grossly misinformed. In the 50th episode of Potstirrer Podcast, Jaye reacts to the Mueller report - or really, the Barr Letter summarizing the report filed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Are the conclusions Attorney General William Barr came to regarding the report accurate? What do we know about Barr, and should he be trusted? Jaye makes the argument that any finding from the Mueller report likely won't matter in terms of repercussions for Donald Trump, but nevertheless, it is vital that the report be released to the public in full. CONTENT WARNING: This episode includes discussion of sexual assault, child molestation, and domestic violence. Listener discretion is advised. R. Kelly has been an R&B superstar for two decades, with hit songs such as "I Believe I Can Fly" and "I Wish," and winning several music awards, including three Grammys. But while Kelly has enjoyed mainstream success, throughout his career, he has been plagued by allegations of sexual involvement with underage girls and inappropriate, abusive relationships with women and girls. Recently, the documentary miniseries "Surviving R. Kelly" was released on Lifetime, discussing allegations of Kelly's sexual misconduct, including more recent allegations that he keeps women and girls captive in an abusive "sex cult." The documentary featured interviews with several accusers, family members of alleged victims, former business and personal associates, and family members. R. Kelly has not been convicted of any crime related to the sexual misconduct and abuse allegations, and he has denied all accusations. In this episode, Jaye discusses the R. Kelly documentary with her brother, the author of Gods of Life and co-owner of Shining Otaku Comics, Ervin Johnson II. Jaye and Ervin talk about Kelly's history, the #MeToo movement, and women's empowerment. The episode also includes a "palate cleanser" segment where they discuss manga (Japanese comics), Shining Otaku, and Gods of Life. When most Americans think of late civil rights icon Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we often picture a unifying Christian minister who used non-violence to advance his dream of racial equality in the United States. But in death, has Dr. King been whitewashed? In the final installment of this two-part series, Jaye provides an overview of Dr. King's transformation - from "outside agitator" to "colorblind civil rights icon." She examines the making of a hero in the American consciousness, and how willful distortion of Dr. King's legacy served a political and social purpose. Is our society that different today than the society of the 1960s? And how has the "rehabilitated" King given the United States an easy out from its original sin of racism? When most Americans think of late civil rights icon Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we often picture a unifying Christian minister who used non-violence to advance his dream of racial equality in the United States. King would have been 90 years old this year, had he not been assassinated. We observe his birthday every January, and often hear his name invoked, as well as that of other civil rights leaders, in February during Black History Month. But in death, has Dr. King been whitewashed? In the first installment of a two-part series, Jaye discusses some widely-held beliefs regarding Dr. King and the world in which he lived. She provides context for Dr. King's life, and sets the record straight on a respected, but misunderstood historical figure. In response to Vice-President Mike Pence stating Christian education should be off-limits to criticism, defending his wife Karen's decision to teach at a Christian school that excludes the LGBTQ community, hashtag #ExposeChristianSchools, started by scholar and exvangelical Chris Stroop @c_stroop, went viral, particularly on Twitter. Jaye discusses the need for extremist ideology and abusive behavior in evangelical Christian schools to be exposed, and the importance of providing space for those who have lived through attending Christian schools to share their experiences. Jaye also shares a couple of personal stories from briefly attending a Christian elementary school. In November of 2018, 26 year old American explorer and missionary John Allen Chau was killed by the Sentinelese people, an isolated tribal group living on North Sentinel Island off the coast of India. Chau went the island illegally in order to share with them about Christianity. The incident is controversial, sparking outrage, consternation, and even admiration. Were Chau's actions worth the cost of his life? And could his actions cost the Sentinelese people their lives as well? Jaye discusses the parties involved in the incident, Christian missionary work, and why history matters when unpacking the discomfort some have with the idea of missions. In light of the growing normalization of white supremacy and related forms of bigotry in the United States, Jaye focuses on the debate between unfettered free speech and the regulation of hate speech. What does "free speech" truly mean in the US context, and why does it matter? Should "dangerous" speech be made illegal? Jaye also discusses libertarian ideology - specifically how, despite its emphasis on individual rights, it may fall short in the realm of free speech. What if the religious extremism Americans should be most concerned about comes from Christianity? In this episode, Jaye explores the authoritarian, extremist elements of American evangelicalism and the overwhelming support of Donald Trump by white evangelical Christians. Jaye also discusses the Quiverfull movement, the increasing emphasis on authoritarianism and control within evangelical Christian colleges, dominionism, racial reconciliation, evangelical support for Donald Trump's inhumane policies, and parallels between right-wing evangelicalism and ultra-conservative Islam. Episode 38 - Voting Still Matters...For Now With the voter registration deadline upon us in many states, Jaye discusses the long-term impact of the vote, and why getting registered to vote and exercising the franchise is important in saving our democracy. She explains how voting in conservatives to federal and state offices over time has led to increased money in politics and reduced political impact from individual voters, especially poor Americans and ethnic minorities. Despite this, Jaye argues that voting still makes a difference, and that focusing on non-voters can help bridge the gap caused by voter suppression. CONTENT WARNING: This episode includes discussion of sexual assault, particularly in the second main segment of the episode. Please be advised. Political science researchers Benjamin Knoll and Cammie Jo Bolin join Jaye in this episode to share with listeners their knowledge and research on women clergy, and talk about their new book, She Preached the Word. The researchers discuss some of the book's themes, including the barriers to ordination of women, the acceptance of women clergy in congregations, and the effects they have on their congregations. They also discuss their research methodology, including the new, original data collected and analyzed to arrive at their findings. How do women clergy affect the self-esteem and outlook of women and girls in their congregations, and how might women in religious leadership affect the prospects of women leadership in other areas of public life?
