Many Americans may be asking themselves the following questions today, given our political climate: · How do we survive amongst a fractured, divided nation? · What happens if an extreme, rigid, corrupt government comes into being? · How do we combat the dangers of centralized power and power-hungry individuals? · What happens when oil runs out and our energy grid is controlled by just one entity? To answer these questions, we meet engineer and author Carl H. Mitchell, who imagines a dystopian world in his books that enlightens, informs, and entertains his readers. Listen in! P.C. Smith was a well-known stained glass in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, for 15 years, creating custom pieces for celebrities and clients all around the world. Upon retirement, she took up her second love, writing, and has published poetry and short stories before writing her debut novel, The Shingle Weaver’s Picnic, at age 84.  This startling and acclaimed debut transports us to a long-gone era and takes us intimately inside of a shocking story of a close-knit family touched by tragedy in the darkest days of the Second World War; and a young girl who must cope with the unthinkable when a child is murdered during her summer visit to her grandparents’ house. Join us for a spirited conversation! Buy the Book here: https://amzn.to/3mQmgOW Learn more here: https://authorpcsmith.com/home “The first thing that drew me to The Shingle Weaver’s Picnic is the cover, which portrays an idyllic childhood scene. The sense of childhood adventures, excitement, and curiosity exuded by the cover is excellently reflected in the narration and the characters…The narration flows exquisitely as the events unfold… The writing flows flawlessly, and I had a hard time putting the book down. Even the descriptions of food scenery, and everyday life are so enthralling that they kept me glued to the pages. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy engrossing storylines and historical fiction set in the United States during World War II.” --Onlinebookclub.org Please support the show with a small donation, here: https://anchor.fm/j-alexander-greenwood/support Subscribe to Mysterious Goings On wherever you get your podcasts or go to MGOPod.com and sign up for our email newsletter. When Carl Buccellato was clearing old files out from his garage, he came across boxes of journals and scribbles that served as a means of capturing memories. At the urging of his wife, Buccellato compiled his various papers and drafted a single book of them. To Every Page A Turning: One Life’s Journey, is a fictitious story that leans heavily on Buccellato’s personal experiences. Born and raised in an Italian household in Brooklyn, Buccellato grew up as the child of an alcoholic in near-poverty conditions, but eventually experienced great success as an adult, despite medical struggles that left him dealing with divorce and substance abuse.  “While many will read it as a biography of the author, it is not,” said Buccellato. “In my mind, it is more of a historical novel depicting the lives and impact of the generation following World War II, and through the remainder of the twentieth century. It is a composite of many people and events over several decades.” Listen in for an enlightening conversation! Connect: https://toeverypageaturning.com/. One area of mystery we haven’t discussed on Mysterious Goings On is urban fantasy, which is, according to author Caitlin Berve essentially detective fiction plus magic. Berve is the author of When Magic Calls: A Collection of Modern Fairy Tales, and in our discussion, where we also discuss the dark history of fairy tales, why those stories are still so prevalent in society, and how fairy tales stick around because their warnings and messages still hold true today.  Through her company Ignited Ink Writing, Berve edits books, writes online content for small businesses, fantasy novels, and blogs about creative writing. Apropos of the haunting month of October, we are joined by James Morgan-Jones. He is the author of The Glasswater Quintet, a series of psychological thrillers with a supernatural slant. The novels are linked by character and location but set in different decades from the last century up to the present day. In this "spirited" discussion, James and Alex discuss writing about the supernatural and the haunting of the mind. They also touch on the spirit of place as a living force in both life and literature: ignore it at your peril, as well as the past: signposts/stepping stones to the future: a major theme in ‘The Glasswater Quintet.’ Four of the five novels are currently published. He has also written a volume of short stories and a volume of poetry. Over lockdown, he produced a second short story volume as well as his first play, and has now launched into the final installment of The Glasswater Quintet – ‘The Ice Chandelier’. Just ask Matty Dalrymple.  She is the author of the Ann Kinnear Suspense Novels and Suspense Shorts and the Lizzy Ballard Thrillers. Minimalism: with the success of Marie Kondo, a new Netflix documentary, and hundreds of blogs and YouTube videos, it’s clear that it is more than just a trend. In a time of climate change and a pandemic, people are looking for new ways to live well and more meaningful lives, and minimalism is meeting that need. Consuming less may already be an environmental and personal priority, but Becca Ehrlich contends that minimalism can be much more. In her new book, Christian Minimalism: Simple Steps for Abundant Living, she explores the direct connection between minimalism and our faith journey. Alex welcomes Justin Connor, writer, actor, producer, and director of THE GOLDEN AGE, a tour de force musical film shot over ten years.  In the film, after a string of incendiary remarks in the press, subversive pop star Maya O’Malley (Connor) gets dropped from his music label and sets out on a spiritual pilgrimage throughout India in an attempt to resolve his troubled past. Film Threat compares THE GOLDEN AGE to a “modern-day THIS IS SPINAL TAP,” while adding “Connor is the movie’s secret weapon. He portrays Maya as a man of intense passion and beliefs.” Connor wrote and performed the songs live throughout the film, and the soundtrack album is now available on all streaming platforms. The project appeals to not only fans of indie film and music aficionados, but resonates with those on a devotional path, children of alcoholics, trauma survivors, and animal rights advocates. How can the properties of time and acceptance flow through poetry? We asked poet and performer Sonia Iris Lozada. Lozada is fascinated with perceptions of time, history, dreams, psychology, and the metaphysical. Her #1 bestselling publications include Inspire Me: Raw (2017), Follow Akashic Dreaming through Time (2019), and Inspire Me: Perception (2019). In this far-ranging and fun conversation, we learn about poetry as a means of self-help, and even a little bit about her life in Hollywood (did we mention she shared the screen with Harrison Ford and Christian Bale?) Her upcoming book is entitled Inspire Me: In Time of Need, the third in the "Inspire Me" series. Poetry has always been Sonia’s way of explaining the bi-cultural world around her. As an actor for both stage and screen, she has appeared in films such as Out of the Wild and Expired, among others.  Her podcast, "Poetic Resurrection” launched in February 2021, to great acceptance.  Her book Follow: Akashic Dreaming Through Time is currently being adapted for film. Ireland-based author Conor J. Bredin joins the show for a fun conversation about taking the indie publishing path, his podcast, and much more. He wrote his first novel after his better half said to him "You always talk about being a writer, but you never write!" Taking that advice on board he knuckled down and wrote The Longest Night, a supernatural thriller. Soon after releasing his book, he became obsessed with learning more about other authors and started up his podcast Story of a Storyteller, where he gets to know the life story of his fellow authors. In this moving interview, we meet Bruce Boise, who helped expose a massive scandal involving the manufacture and marketing of opioids that, to this day, has staggered the nation.  Boise worked for nearly 24 years in the pharmaceutical industry, first as a hospital representative, and then as a sales manager in the Great Lakes region. After losing his job after being a whistleblower, he spent portions of the next 17 years working with the United States Justice Department on two separate False Claims Act cases against his former employer, Cephalon/Teva, a neuro biotech company. His story is told in a gripping new book, Cold Comfort: One Man's Struggle to Stop the Illegal Marketing of Powerful Opioid Drugs and Save Lives.
