I'm back with the first episode in nearly 2 weeks. And a rough 2 weeks it's been. I've been flat on my back fighting pneumonia, and it's taken a LOT out of me. I'm finally back to where I can carry on a conversation without struggling to breathe. But it's still difficult to record a whole podcast episode. I'm back today to say that this will be the last episode to Teen Catalyst for the year. I plan to hit it hard next year with fresh new content and interviews for you guys. Today I want to talk about mentorship. A mentor is someone who is known as a trusted counselor or guide. Recognize that vulnerability is an actual leadership competency, and that peers, colleagues, and direct reports crave relatability and transparency in their leaders. The higher you are in an organization, the more warped and blurred your view becomes of what's really happening on the ground. So, remember not only to focus ON the business, but work IN the business as needed. Be a light, not a judge. Be a model, not a critic. What actions are required for you to demonstrate the vulnerability that allows those around you to do the sam?. ~ Dave HollisProtect your brain. Just because you can't see your brain doesn't mean it's not there. Invest as much energy caring for it as you do for your heart, your lungs, your skin, and other more conspicuous organs. Although that certainly is true, excercising the self-discipline NOT to do something can exponentiate your creativity and productivity. Today, I want to talk about some of the symptoms of mental health issues caused by overthinking. Overthinking is one of the biggest threats to making progress in your life, because it keeps you from taking action, and that can lead to poor performance in many areas of your life. Here are 5 symptoms of when overthinking goes wrong: You start believing the lies. You start worrying more. You have trouble concentrating. You lack mental energy. Everything seems to be moving too fast. If you feel like you are on a dangerous path with your thoughts, find someone you trust to talk to. You can't always see yourself clearly, especially when your thoughts are running around in circles. Overthinking is not an easy thing to overcome; you have to take the time to learn to redirect those thoughts. Don't get caught up in the negative, but learn to embrace the positive. Continuing my miniseries on the 5 keys to an impactful life, today I want to focus on key #2: Focusing on What Matters. Lack of direction, NOT the lack of time, is the problem. ~Zig ZiglerFocus on your strengths, not your weaknesses. Focus on your character, and not your reputation. Focus on your blessing, and not your misfortune. ~Roy T Bennet Focus goes hand-in-hand with key #1: Input. If you're focused on the right things, you'll take in the right things. You have to be aware, and put your focus in the right place. Draw a picture of a venn diagram (three circles slightly overlapping each other, creating small overlapping areas with an area in the middle where all three circles overlap. These three circles represent your circle of concern, your circle of influence, and your circle of control. Now I want you to write down a few things that you're concerned about. Create another list of the things that you have some influence over. Then write another list of the things that you can control. Some of these things might overlap. Where you need to be placing your focus is on your circle of control. If some of those things overlap with the other circles, then those are the areas where you are likely to have a greater impact. Focus on those things, and you will be much happier for it.

Today, I will be diving a little deeper into key #1, controlling your inputs. Only when you make the right changes to your thinking do other things begin to turn out right. ~John Maxwell If better were within, better would come out. ~J.R. Rim What both of these men are trying to say is what goes into your mind (the things you focus on and purposely think about) affect everything about your life, including the way you act. A lot of people say you can 'think' yourself rich, but that only works if, as you think about those things, you begin to see and act on the opportunities that come your way. With the good actions come the good outcomes that you're hoping for. So, with better input comes better output. Philippians 4:8 says, "Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things."

One of the most important trait that you can have in creating the life you want to live is discipline. Most of the time, when people think of discipline, they automatically think 'punishment'. That is not the kind of discipline we're talking about. The kind of discipline we're talking about today is 'beating yourself into submission', so to speak. It's making yourself give up the short-term pleasures in order to achieve a long-term goal. Why is self-discipline so important? Practicing self-discipline is an integral part of every aspect of life, and is a major key to achieving your long-term goals. Self-discipline is not something that you just have; it is a skill that you have to constantly work at in order to see results. Contrary to popular belief, self-discipline isn't just being hard on yourself or living a restrictive lifestyle. It is simply the act of self-control. Today I want to talk about how to get more done in life, and learn how to know where to put your effort in. Going big and trying more things is often the best way to create success. When you take enough chances, and create enough output, eventually you'll be sure to have at least one success under your belt. Now, that can be a secret to guaranteed success, but don't underestimate the power of working smart. What it means to work smart is to be strategic in the way you approach a problem or ambition. It's aiming your approach in such a way that you can "shortcut" your way to success, and accomplish more with less effort. This is where the 80/20 rule, also known as the Pareto Principle, comes in. Today I want to talk about something that so many teenagers struggle with: assertiveness. So many people struggle to learn how to be assertive without rubbing people the wrong way. So, what is assertiveness? Assertiveness is an important skill for effective communication. It allows you to communicate your wants and needs in a healthy manner. So many people tend to interpret assertiveness as being hostile or even rude. There is a right way and a wrong way to being assertive, and one of the key factors is tactfulness. A good way to practice this interpersonal skill is to assert your opinions in low stress situations. Go out and practice being more assertive in a non-agressive and non-confrontational manner.

If you can learn to reframe the things you say by looking at the inverse of the limiting belief, then your life will be so much better. Here are the 5 main limiting beliefs that destroy your self-confidence: Having a poor body image Feeling the need to alter your mental state Believing that you're not worthy of love Living in fear of rejection Believing that you will never be able to achieve your dreams Create the belief in your mind that you WILL succeed. A lot of teens that I talk to get hung up on what to start, whether they're looking at starting a side hustle to earn some extra income or whether they're trying to figure out what to do for a career. If you don't have a plan for your own life, it's likely you'll fall into somebody else's plan, and that somebody else does not have what you want planned for you. Grab a notebook and start recording ideas and thoughts that will form a new and revised plan for your life. Spend some time thinking about the various aspects of your life: your home, the career you want to get into, relationships with family and friends, your love life, etc... Life isn't perfect all the time, but it's a reasonable goal to feel satisfaction, joy, and a sense of comfort and well-being in your own life.
