November is typically a month where gratitude is in focus, but sometimes it's hard to be grateful in ministry. In this episode, Stevie Ciske and I chat about how to cultivate gratitude in ministry. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, "Give thanks in everything: for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." Stevie points out that to not give thanks in everything is to be out of God's will. (#gutpunch) But what does that really look like? You may not have heard of it before, but the probability is high that at some point in your ministry life you will encounter the Jezebel spirit. In this episode, lead pastor's wife, Nicole Tull, shares her experience and what she's learned about defeating this attack of the enemy. Some people hear "Jezebel" and immediately think of a seductive woman, but that's not necessarily how it works. What is a common denominator is that the target is a man or woman of God in leadership. When I created the anonymous survey for pastors' wives, one of the questions is "what do you struggle with as a pastor's wife?". I never expected one of the top 3 answers to be "my relationship with God." But, in fact, that's one of the top answers to that question! My friend Susan Belisle is on this episode of the podcast and she shares her insights on developing the most important relationship we can have. In her book, 40 Conversations with God That Will Change Your Life, Susan invites you to take a peek into her quiet time. You will be so encouraged in your walk with God, no matter what season of life you find yourself.   Links We Mentioned Susan's website - SusanBelisle.com Called 2 Ministry Facebook Group 40 Conversations with God - Facebook Group Purchase 40 Conversations with God book - - - - - - - -  Join the Private Facebook Community The Pastor Wife Life group on Facebook is a private group just for you! One of the ways God makes the most out of our pastor wife platform is by using our experiences to help others. A personal tragedy in Karen's life has become the catalyst for a community-wide (and beyond!) outreach to minister to those whose lives have been impacted by the grief surrounding the death of a loved one. In this episode she shares how God brought her healing after the suicide of her brother to eventually become a facilitator for Grief Share, a ministry that helps those facing the deep hurt of losing a loved one or friend and supports them as they move toward rebuilding their lives. Karen Altizer resides in West Virginia with her husband and children.  She is a pastor’s wife and a homeschool mom, and volunteers for various ministries within her church and community.  Karen has been in full time ministry for over 20 years and has been a facilitator for GriefShare for six years.

My friends Diane Nix of Contagious Joy 4 Him and Leighann McCoy and I got together and recorded a series of episodes based Leighann's book Spiritual Warfare for Women, this series of podcasts will equip you for the spiritual battles that come your way. Spiritual warfare is real; it's not "spooky" or "woo-woo", it doesn't mean there's a devil behind every bush, but it is impacting our communities, churches, families, and our selves! The good news? God has provided everything we need to find victory through Him. In 2019, Ashley Brown and her husband Greg began feeling God’s call to plant a church. Only God knew what we now all know . . . a pandemic was coming. But that didn’t stop them from moving forward, “zoom”ing their launch team gatherings and planting a church in the midst of a pandemic! If that’s not dramatic enough, in the fall of 2020, Ashley and Greg both contracted COVID. Ashley’s symptoms were mild enough, but Greg’s symptoms were extreme and turned into one of the rarest casest (1 out of only 30 documented in the world!) doctors had ever seen. 7 Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Bible Reading Plan 1. Remember the WHY. We don’t follow the plan just so we can check off a box and say we accomplished it. We read the Word to know God and to develop a deeper relationship with Him. Reading the Word gives us a greater understanding of who He is and shows us a wider picture of what He has done, what He is doing, and what He is going to do. It reminds us who we are because of Him and reveals our purpose. It helps us set our focus on things above, and gives us wisdom to live the life He created us to live. 2. Choose a time and a place. When is the best time to read? Believe it or not, there is no hard, fast rule about when you have your quiet time. For most of us, the morning works out to be the best time – a time before the distractions of the day hit. By getting up a few minutes earlier, you have the benefit of setting your focus for the day. You have the opportunity to let God’s voice be the first voice that you hear, before all the other voices in your world have a chance to barge in. Some people use their lunch break for their time. Others before they go to sleep. The important thing is to choose a time when you are alert and can really focus on what the Word is saying. Whatever time you choose, commit to it. Show up. Be ready to receive. If something happens and you miss your time, reschedule it for later. Getting behind is discouraging and the enemy will do his best to influence you to just give up. If you get behind, don’t give up. Keep going!  Catch up when you can! Decide where you are going to read. I like to read at my desk because I take a lot of notes. I like to have my pens and highlighters handy. Wherever you choose, choose a place as free from distraction as possible. If you’re like me and want to have supplies ready, get a basket or a bag and put your Bible, journal, and pens in it so it’s always ready to go. 3. Use a print Bible. We live in a time where everything is available digitally. It’s really easy to open the Bible app on your phone and read from there. But can I encourage you to use a print Bible? Our minds have become accustomed to opening our phones and just skimming through content and we miss so much!. Scientific studies have shown that we absorb more when we read printed books over digital ones. Having an actual Bible in our hands allows us to really engage with the Word. Highlighting and underlining and making notes in the margins personalizes our experience and keeps our attention. One thing you may find helpful though, is to listen to the Word while you read it. I use the audio from the Bible app while I read the Word in my print Bible and there’s something to hearing the words and seeing the words at the same time. You can find the Bibles that PD and I will using on Amazon. We both like having the wide margins to take notes in, but they also make a regular OYB that’s smaller and a little easier to handle. You can also use a Bible you already have and follow along with the printed plan. 4. Keep a journal. I am a writer. I write everything down, so of course I keep a quiet time journal. I learned this from my first mentor when I was a teenager and I absolutely treasure looking back at what I’ve written! My journal is probably a bit more elaborate than most peoples, but the principle of journaling – of writing down what you observed in the Word, what God spoke to you specifically about, how you are responding to your time with Him is the same. You can make it as simple or elaborate as you want, but you will be so glad at the end of 2021 that you wrote down your thoughts. Some days I write more than others in my journal – and some days you’ll only see the date and the passage I read, but here are few things you can write down. What jumped out at you?  Was there a truth about the Father, the Son, or the Holy Spirit that you noticed?  Were there any promises or commands or guidelines that God asked of His people? Were there warnings? How are you going to live out what you read? Is there a declaration you want to speak over your life? 5. Reading the Word and prayer go together. Pray before you start to read. Psalm 119:18 the Psalmist asks God to open his eyes to the wonderful things in His Word.  And here’s a pro tip, if you don’t feel like reading the Word, tell God. He can handle it. Just admitting that to Him opens up the door for Him to work in your heart. Pray when you’re finished reading. Look back at your notes or what you underlined or highlighted. Talk to God about it. No need for fancy words. Just share your thoughts about what you read. Ask Him the questions you have. Don’t like what you just read? Ask Him to change your heart and show you how to honor Him as the Holy Spirit brings transformation. 6. Don’t compare your journey with anyone else’s. If you’re reading through the Bible for the first time, it can be overwhelming. It might feel like there are days when you don’t understand one word of what you just read. That’s perfectly normal and it happens to all of us no matter how long you’ve been a Christian. There may be days when you think, what am I supposed to do with what I just read? When you hear other people talk about what they got out of their reading that week, you may wonder if you’re even reading the same Bible! One of the things I love is seeing what I wrote about over the years. I can read the same passage and get a completely different revelation than I did the year before. The Word is alive and active – the Holy Spirit can show you 20 different things from the same verse over the years. It’s one of the things that makes reading the Word so exciting! I promise you. When you stay faithful to the Word, God is faithful to show you exactly what He wants you to see. You are unique. Your purpose is unique. And He will personalize the Word just for you. 7. Find an accountability partner. Find someone to ask you if you’ve read your Bible. Maybe that will look like a simple text to them saying, “DONE!”. And make sure they’re willing to call you out if they don’t hear from you! Psalm 19 tells us some of the benefits of the Word. The instruction of the Lord is perfect, renewing one’s life; the testimony of the Lord is trustworthy, making the inexperienced wise. The precepts of the Lord are right, making the heart glad; the command of the Lord is radiant, making the eyes light up. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are reliable and altogether righteous. They are more desirable than gold— than an abundance of pure gold; and sweeter than honey dripping from a honeycomb.  In addition, your servant is warned by them, and in keeping them there is an abundant reward. Spending time in the Word is time well spent! We are experiencing an unprecedented (at least in our lifetime) event as this episode goes live. As pastors' wives, we are stepping into a whole new arena of ministry and as a popular meme says, "and just like that, we were all televangelists." We are learning more than ever before that the Church is not a building and we are finding new ways to connect with our people. The creativity of Church Creatives around the world has lit up the Facebook groups I'm in and I wanted to share a few ideas on how we can continue to minister in this crazy season! This list is certainly not exhaustive, but I asked the ladies in the Pastor Wife Life Facebook group how they are connecting with their people and communities and I've compiled some of these answers right here. 1. Provide lunches for healthcare employees. (Andrea Z.) 2. Send out a daily text with a prayer focus for the day. (Julie M.) 3. Create a private Facebook group for your church family. (Julie M.) 4. Feeding kids in the local community. (Julie M.) 5. Feeding parents at the local children's hospital. (Julie M.) 6. Zoom Meetings (Nicole C.) Zoom is a video conferencing app that allows you to meet virtually and it's a fun way to connect. People are leading Sunday School classes, Bible studies, small groups, youth gatherings, discipleship, etc. The possibilities are endless! 7. Phone calls. Yes! Actual phone calls. (This is way out of my comfort zone, but I'm making myself do it!) A lot of our older members aren't comfortable texting and some don't do social media at all so a phone call to them means so much! We divided our church directory between the staff and leadership and are all making phone calls to our congregation. 8. Post Bible stories and lessons for kids. Many churches are posting quick videos from their children's pastor or directors. LifeChurch has a ton of free resources available. Other companies have waived their copyright restrictions to those who have purchased their curriculum. 9. Provide a packet for kids with worksheets, crafts, and other things to go along with the video lessons. Drop them off at homes. 10. Coronavirus Caroling. One of our members, Jenna, posted "this past Saturday, myself and a few other ladies went 'coronavirus caroling'. We drove separately to people’s homes from our church family and sang hymns to them from their yards (a responsible distance apart). I can’t tell you how many people stood on their porches in tears singing with us. It was very moving.' 11. Post a video devotional from your staff. Our church is doing this. We are rotating through the staff and posting a 5-minute video with an encouraging word from Scripture. 12. Create a YouTube playlist of songs that focus on faith and the goodness of God. 13. Create a Spotify playlist of songs that focus on faith and the goodness of God. 14. Post a daily Bible Break with a specific chapter/passage to read and ask a few questions to help people dive into the Word. 15. Post a live worship set from your worship leader. BONUS: Join the Facebook Group Church Communications for a wealth of ideas and practical how-tos. CULTIVATING YOUR OWN HEALTH DURING THIS SEASON Stay in the Word. Keep a prayer journal and pray-cess all your emotions with God. He's big enough to handle your fear, doubt, anger, frustration, and bring you comfort, peace, while aligning your heart with His. Have praise and worship playing 24/7 somewhere in your house. Drink a lot of water. Light exercise every day. Limit exposure to the news and social media. For better sleep, turn off all screens by 7pm. Declutter/organize something every day. Get crafty. Connect with people through phone calls, texts, Facetime, etc. Take a shower. Get dressed.
