We both have the unique experience of working with our mom. Today, we’re taking time to get into the pros, the cons, and the things we wish we’d known when we first started this great family working arrangement. There are some amazing upsides and wins to working with family. Most importantly, nobody will ever have your back more than family will. At the same time, no one is more willing to point out where you’re going astray, which can shorten the time it takes to get the right answer. There’s a unique sense of comradery and loyalty that comes with family empire building. If you get it right, it can be so rewarding. On the other hand, when big business meets big life, things can get messy. Family can get under your skin in ways that no one else can. Mixing the wrong ingredients and attitudes can be a damaging recipe for stress. Plus, you see them outside of work which can make it feel like the job never ends. It’s worth finding ways to overcome these problems, though, because the pre-existing chemistry and knack for collaboration among family members can be a huge benefit to your business. Listen to find out how you can make it work for you. This is the sixth and final episode of our series covering The Six Personal Perspectives, and we’ve saved the last for something that ties all of the others together: accountability. Once we remove limiting beliefs, there are still going to be things that happen in our life – and while you can’t control this, you can control how you respond to it. Accountability is incredibly freeing if you learn to embrace it. We’re going to share five ways you can hold yourself accountable. When you see the successes of other empire builders, you don’t get a true glimpse at the principles behind their success. There are some that are fundamental to success in business and in life. We see their effects, but it can be hard to identify where they come from.  Continuing our series on The Six Personal Perspectives, we’re going to talk about “moving from E to P,” or going from being entrepreneurial to being purposeful. When you’re first starting your business, you’re likely doing what comes naturally to you. You can grow a good-sized company that way, but eventually you’ll hit a ceiling because that can only get you so far. Moving from entrepreneurial to purposeful means moving beyond what comes naturally, and being purposeful about stepping outside your comfort zone or surrounding yourself with people that possess the abilities that you do not. We’re going break down five ways you can go from E to P in any part of your business or life: Having focus Creating strategies and actions Following the model Creating systems Being accountable Connect on Instagram: Seychelle Van Poole: https://www.instagram.com/seychellevp (@seychellevp) Vija Williams: https://www.instagram.com/viavija (@viavija) Sarah Reynolds: https://www.instagram.com/sarahreynoldsoji (@sarahreynoldsoji) Wendy Papasan: https://www.instagram.com/wendypapasan (@wendypapasan) Empire Building is a production of http://crate.media (Crate Media)

The 80/20 Principle (also known as the Pareto Principle) states that 20% of your efforts yield 80% of your results, while 80% of your efforts only make up the remaining 20% of your results. You see this balance reflected all over the world in almost any area. And while the numbers aren’t always exact, the idea is always present: things in life are not distributed equally. We explore how this principle plays out in life, finding the 20% of activities that produce 80% of your results, and how you can leverage it in your work and life to focus on the actions that matter most. If you’re listening to this podcast, chances are you either are – or want to be – a high-level achiever. We’ve found that there are six foundational principles that the highest achievers each possess. Gary Keller calls them The Six Personal Perspectives. These six things can have a massive impact on lives, so we’re dedicating an entire series of episodes to them, starting with “committing to mastery.” This habit is foundational to all the rest because it means making a commitment to becoming a master of oneself. To truly lead others, you must know how to lead yourself. The three components of self-mastery are: Knowing your goals Knowing your strengths and weaknesses Using your strengths and hiring for your weaknesses Resources: Goal Setting Retreat: http://the1thing.com/setmygoals (the1thing.com/setmygoals) CliftonStrengths: https://www.gallup.com/cliftonstrengths/en/home.aspx (https://www.gallup.com/cliftonstrengths/en/home.aspx) Connect on Instagram: Seychelle Van Poole: https://www.instagram.com/seychellevp (@seychellevp) Vija Williams: https://www.instagram.com/viavija (@viavija) Sarah Reynolds: https://www.instagram.com/sarahreynoldsoji (@sarahreynoldsoji) Wendy Papasan: https://www.instagram.com/wendypapasan (@wendypapasan) Empire Building is a production of http://crate.media (Crate Media)

Whether we want to admit it or not, all of us have limiting beliefs. These are beliefs that are deeply ingrained in us that hold us back from accomplishing things because we’ve often given up before we even get started. It’s hard to do something when your mindset is telling you that it could never be successful. We’re going to share six steps to overcome these limiting beliefs and move past your comfort zone. When you start out as an entrepreneur, you’re responsible for everything. And for female entrepreneurs, the unfortunate truth is that we’re often left to be responsible for most of the things at home too. We only have so much time in the day, so what makes the difference between getting everything done or being a big mess? Most children growing up today are accustomed to both parents working, but back in the day it was traditionally the male who brought home the bacon and the female fried it in the pan. We’re well past those days — today nearly a third of American households have a female breadwinner. However, many of the other traditional dynamics haven’t changed: Women still do more childcare and housework than their husbands, and men still feel the pressure to be the breadwinner. There are ways you can have a healthy marriage and family and still be the primary breadwinner, and we’re going to walk through four important aspects that make it happen. Without relationships, there is no trust. People do not come to work day after day just to punch a time clock — they come to work for a person or group of people. For them to give it their absolute best, and for us to get the best out of them, they must have relationships with their leader. As your empire grows bigger this becomes harder and harder, so it's continually  more important to give it your focus and attention. There are eight steps to lead in your relationships, showing people that you care, and keeping your top talent. Understand your team’s story Learn what makes people tick Connect on social media Names (and pronunciation) matter Find a common interest Catch them doing something right Be part of their life journey Invest in your people Building an empire isn’t just about building big businesses — it’s about building big lives. And that means not just your life, but your people’s lives too. So get out there and care for your people. So many people — women especially — struggle with confidence in the workplace. We still have a long way to go when it comes to gender stereotypes, and one of the more pervasive ones that women face is that they can’t be too aggressive or confident without appearing to be abrasive. This programming starts in childhood when boys are encouraged to be competitive and take risks while girls are encouraged to be kind, sweet, and polite. You have to have confidence to succeed. Let’s discuss how to fight back against that programming and cultivate more confidence in the next generation of women. As children, the world is full of rules and boundaries. Being raised this way trains our brain to seek permission for the things we want to do—for days off, to get a raise, to move up the ladder. It’s a part of our society. But the one person we never ask permission from is the most important person in our lives: ourselves. Last year was a wild one collectively, but no matter how it was for you personally, it’s time to give yourself permission to make 2021 your best year yet. We’re going to help you define what it would mean to live extraordinarily in the seven core areas of your life, as well as helping you through some of the roadblocks that may come up along the way. There’s something about a new year that’s so refreshing. People often use this time to look at themselves, examine their lives, and try to fix things… or they talk about doing that, at least. 60% of Americans make New Year’s Resolutions, but only 8% of those actually follow through with them! We want the Empire Building community to be a part of that success, and true resolutions are all about creating habits. Our habits determine who we become, whether they are good habits or bad, and relying on self-discipline just won’t cut it. We talk about making a building block habit, assessing your seven circles of life, how to create a snowball effect, and creating a habit loop.
