New York Sports and Rhymes tackles concussions in regards to football and whether or not there's a future for the game? If so, what measures need to be taken to promote awareness regarding concussion protocols? I interview a concussion specialist, Doctor Mansi Vakil, the licensed author of Concussion and Sports. Dr. Mansi Vakil's goal is to spread awareness about how to properly assess concussions, treatment and how to minimize the risk of concussions. Dr. Vakil is actively working on devising a Return to play protocol specific to athletes playing football. This protocol/ treatment will minimize the risk of secondary and sub-concussive symptoms. With the Giants starting the year in Jerry Land, Eli has now played the most games in team history. Doubt is at an all-time high, excellent. Official notice to the league, prepare to be surprised. The fun starts week 1. Please continue with the noise. Eli's redemption tour begins now, with a win against the Cowboys.

Winning was becoming contagious, as was momentum. No lead was safe for the opposition. Any deficit they faced was almost instantly erased. Self-fulfilling prophecies are powerful. The Mets take it to a new level. If there’s a grave to be dug, just hand them a shovel. Forget getting swept; the Mets have been vacuumed out of the wild card race. The season isn’t over, Adele’s not singing, but the Mets are running out of time.

Born on 9/12/89, Andrew Luck stunned the NFL, when he decided to resign this past weekend at the tender age of 29. Sending Shock waves across the nation. Who cares, I’m here to embrace him. Look in the mirror Doug; you’re on twitter, the most millennial way to communicate. You’re nothing more than an ingrate. Congratulations to Andrew Luck for focusing on the quality of life. We only get one you might as well live it right.

Odell Beckham Jr. made it clear that all he cares about is winning, nothing else. That’s a nice sentiment. His talents are heaven-sent, but his decision making renders him irrelevant. Not only is his reality skewed, but Beckham also doesn’t have the slightest clue about what it takes to win, so his teams lose. Odell will always have an excuse, and it’s the reason he remains confused.

While the Giants cornerback still clings to the identity forged in his hometown, he’s now among the elder statesmen in the swamps of New Jersey. As he enters his fourth season with the Giants and eighth in the NFL, “Jackrabbit” has unexpectedly been anointed as a leader.  From Florida to North Alabama to St. Louis to New York, Janoris Jenkins has grown but hasn’t changed. He’s still Jackrabbit from The Muck. And he’s ready for his next chapter.

Once Tate learned the fertility pills included a banned substance; he immediately notified the NY Giants and the NFL. The news didn’t come to light after a dirty urine sample. Tate told the truth. While this might work in the court of public opinion, it’s not likely to work in the NFL’s court of law. Maybe it’s time for an update? The current rules regarding possible PED misuse state guilty until proven innocent. Aren’t laws intended to protect, no matter the defendant or what they’re up against?

How have the Mets rewarded GM Bodie Van Wagenen for keeping their core intact? The Mets, who sat 11 games under 500 upon losing their first game after the All-Star Break, are now a game over 500 and just 2 1/2 spots out of the NL WC.

Megan Rapinoe reminds me of a modern-day Muhammad Ali. She’s a constant voice for equal rights whether the discussion is focused on gender, race or sexual preference. Rapinoe has two core values, working hard and having fun. On the field, she creates and finishes. Rapinoe celebrates, yet, does so without being a jerk. As Ali put it best, “It ain’t bragging if you can back it up”.

Fortunate enough to have Thunder Insider, Andrew Ivy, join me to break down life in OKC after the departure of PG13. This was recorded a day before the Beard and Broadie decided to sync back up in Houston. Q1. Tell me your initial reaction to the PG13 trade? Did you see it coming? Did you hear any rumblings or were you completely caught off guard? Completely caught off guard, didn’t see it coming in the slightest. Q2. Were the Thunder a contender this season if Paul George returned? Was change necessary? No, they were a middle-tier team at best in the beast of the west Q3. What are your thoughts on Russell Westbrook, especially as some who has been heavily involved with the franchise since they moved to OKC? He’s been a focal point of the Thunder since their inception. Did they choose the right player to build around? Nothing but love for Russ. Believes the thunder were a victim of poor coaching, allowing egos to become inflated, rather than placing the blame on Russ, Harden or KD Q4. Was it wrong to feature Westbrook as the primary guard, not Harden? Especially, when Russell thrives playing out of position and could’ve continued his unselfish play in the NBA, keeping the original Big 3 in tact, after their first finals defeat. It was Harden’s heroics against Ginobili that allowed OKC to reach the finals. Didn’t utilize Westbrook correctly, playing him off the point the way they did at UCLA when he burst on the scene. Harden, didn’t console him properly, thought that big 3 would never disband, and didn’t take the necessary action to make sure each player was happy with their ability to grow as a player and a man. If the coach was able to make the team bigger than the player, The Thunder would’ve been the best team the NBA has witnessed, probably not allowing the Warriors dream squad, which is built off discipline and execution as much as it is talent. OKC struggles with execution and cohesive play. Q5. Was it possible to keep the BIG 3 In Tact? Where did the Thunder fall short in their efforts to keep James Harden? Took it for granted; yet Presti is an excellent GM. It’s weird that he wants yes men as those are the very coaches preventing the Thunder from winning a title. Q6. What is your preferred method regarding how the Thunder handle Russell Westbrook before the season starts? Is there a certain team you’d like to see him join? Knew he’d get traded. Found it interesting how Riley had the Heat in contention to pair Russ with Jimmy. Presti has redeemed himself for those who believe he didn’t get enough in the PG13 deal. He does right by his players. Q7. What to make of the Oklahoma City Thunder once Westbrook leaves. What are the most important orders of business Sam Presti needs to take care of? Does the organization have issues when it comes to the salary cap vs the luxury tax? Who, in your mind, is the right coach to take the OKC Thunder job, knowing they’re in a complete rebuild? I have two people in mind, Mark Jackson or Dave Jaeger. New Coach, except what coach with a track record will want to start the rebuild Draft picks aren’t players Package picks while rebuilding. Change the inside of the organization. Not the end of the world and Presti is too savvy not to be left without anything. Time to man up and let a coach run the show. Great ball city, too much pride and excitement for OKC to be a bottom barrel team in the West.

The Knicks didn't offer Kevin Durant the MAX? Are you serious? This is EXACTLY what I've been waiting for, a front office capable of showing constraint. While the biggest FREE Agency in years didn't result in a championship contender being built overnight. By bringing back less, Knick fans have more to smile about than ever. It's evident the front office is committed to success.

With NBA Free Agency set to begin on June 30th, I can’t help but think about the Rockets and Celtics. Why, because these teams highlight the right and wrong way to run successful NBA franchises.  Brad Stevens has complete autonomy, allowing the Celtics to develop an identity where young players flourish. As a result, Boston has become the class of the NBA, and a roadmap for long-term success in today’s game. The Rockets GM, Daryl Morey, won’t allow basketball brains to operate in the front office, as he’s still trying to win with deep pockets. Houston, you’ve got a problem and an ignoramus as an owner, who has no chance to solve them. When you force the matter in life, you’re going to pay the price. When you let things fall into place, success comes naturally; it’s not something you have to chase.

Fire Mickey Callaway and hire former Yankees and World Series-winning Manager Joe Girardi, right away. Despite the current mess, this move would bring about instant success. So much so, that I will go on record, stating a Girardi run Mets will be playing baseball in October. If they don’t, The Mets might as well mimic Robby Cano and stop running in the playoff race. Buster Olney recently wrote an article for ESPN plus about how the Mets need to sell, sell, sell at the deadline. Then, all I hear on WFAN, The home of sports radio in NY is how awful the Mets organization is. I didn’t realize 28-29 and only 5 games out of first place constitutes as awful? Especially when you’re built around a pitching staff that’s been more reminiscent of staff infection to start the season? It’s a shame that Trump has received more play with Stormy Daniels than the Mets have with Yoenis Cespedes. Such is life. At the end of the day, the eye test is what matters most. Everything else takes a back seat. If the starting rotation right’s the ship, the New York Met’s have the talent to win the NL East.

Born on July 13, 1995, 23-year-old Cody Bellinger of the LA Dodgers is the best player in MLB. Instead of trying to do too much, Cody’s out there playing the game he loves, and it’s more than enough. With the Mets currently playing the Dodger’s, I’ve been able to witness greatness. While Bellinger is throwing runners out and hitting the laces off balls thrown by the games elite aces. Despite him playing against the team I love, I’d be silly to say I wasn’t watching with sheer fear & amazement

Loyalty is a foreign word in today’s NBA. So, it’s fitting that the man who defines this word plays in a different country. Toronto Raptors PG Kyle Lowry. The Raptors knew a change was necessary if they wanted to reach the next level after 5 straight playoff appearances, all ending in heartbreak. They also knew Lowry was the catalyst for a championship run if surrounded by the right pieces. Without having a rock like Lowry to ensure Kawhi’s transition aligned with Toronto’s vision, their mission of reaching the NBA finals would have remained impossible. Fortunately, Lowry’s impact is colossal, and his presence has made this Raptor run possible.

Could another injury in game 5 derail the Rockets chance at the NBA Finals? Last year, Chris Paul injured his groin during game 5, grounding the Rockets chances of dethroning Golden State. This year, at the end of Game 5, it wasn’t a Rocket who was injured, it was Kevin Durant. The best player in the NBA, whose injury might have woken up the best team in the NBA. With the series headed back to clutch city, expect game 6 to be a gritty dogfight, and an offensive storm. The Beard and CP3 better perform at a level well beyond their norm, guarding the three. The Splash Brothers are back, with Steph reverting back to his form when he was the leagues MVP.

Once a pitcher is locked in, his teammates follow suit, especially on defense. The game of baseball becomes rhythmic. Both teams pick up their pace of play and the game moves with little disturbance. The margin for error is far less since a start can be for naught if one mistake is made. Baseball is an art form, where defense is meant to have a greater impact than offense. Instead of having 9 players in unison all focused on doing their part in securing an out. The lone player in the batter’s box dictates the pace of play and the eventual outcome. Once the batter takes over, the games slows down to a halt. Finally, homers are less exciting since they’re hit more frequently.

I'm a Knicks fan, painful, as it is to admit.  Here's who I want this summer, Kevin Durant.  Here's who I don't want. Kyrie Irving. The best man to play alongside KD is none other than Bronx born Kemba Walker. You heard me right. Let Kyrie be about Kyrie as the Celts go down the tubes to Milwaukee. The same Milwaukee Bucks team the Celtics blew through last year in the playoffs without Irving. Kemba has yet to play alongside a superstar and other talented pieces. There’s not a better place for this to happen than Midtown Manhattan. Instead of Kyrie Irving bringing out the best in others, he views their success as a threat to his playing time. Furthermore, Kyrie’s inability to commit to the Celtics long term has served as a major distraction. Finally, Irving has been hampered by a laundry list of injuries during his short career. Walker’s from the Bronx. He’s New York Gritty, ready and willing to bring a championship back to the City. The most attractive part of Kemba besides his game, attitude, and loyalty is his health.

Society praises athletes for their current contributions on the field. What about when their career’s end? Most players become an afterthought. How about Plaxico Burress? The former All-Pro New York Giant Wide Receiver who caught the winning Touchdown in Super Bowl 42, recently wrote a letter to the Upcoming NFL Draft class. He speaks with raw honesty, accountability & humility. I always hear retired guys who have been through something in their lives say things like, “I wouldn’t change a thing because it made me who I am today. ”But would I change anything? Hell yeah, I would. I wouldn’t have shot myself in the damn leg. I wouldn’t have even gone home to get my gun that night. I would have known the laws on carrying a gun in NYC. New England Patriots owner, Robert Kraft, is facing two counts of soliciting a prostitute at a massage parlor in Jupiter, Florida. To get the record straight, Mr. Kraft isn’t involved in a prostitution ring. He would attend this massage parlor frequently, where he’d receive a happy ending. For a man with 6 large Super Bowl rings, one could see why he’d seek out assistance. Is this the definition of good decision-making, not at all? Since Mr. Kraft’s wife, Myra, passed away after 48 years of marriage. His decision-making has been questionable on the dating scene. He’s also 78. Robert Kraft played a pivotal role in reversing rapper Meek Mill’s 30-year prison sentence. He provided the oft-troubled wide receiver Josh Gordon a 5th chance this past season. Duke Football and the NFL, that’s an oxymoron, maybe cognitive dissonance, right? I would urge the Giants to think twice at pick 17, and eventually pass on a Quarterback. Unless the Giants select Dwayne Haskins or Josh Rosen, I will consider this franchise changing draft an ultimate success if a QB isn’t chosen. In Dave Gettleman I trust. In Daniel Jones, I don’t. After the Giants traded Odell Beckham Jr, everyone questioned GM Dave Gettleman’s sanity. How will the Giants be able to score without Beckham’s heroics? Signing Sterling Shepard to a 4 year, 41 million dollar deal, helps answer that question. Shepard joins veteran slot receiver Golden Tate who signed an almost identical 4-year deal in Free Agency, as the Giants new 1-2 punch at wide receiver. Both players are sure-handed, run crisp routes and are exceptional run blockers. They also break away from defenders with ease, gaining chunks of yards after the catch. The Giants are no longer counting on a fantasy-based roster to produce points. They’re entrenched in reality and will score more frequently and consistently as a result. This is Greg Landorf and that was New York Sports and Rhymes. Gettleman hater’s best halt. Great job opening up and adding Gold and Sterling Silver to the New York Giants Vault.

After the Brooklyn Nets traded their future away for aging superstars in 2015, who could have imagined they’d return to the playoffs 3 years later with a roster fueled by young talent? How were they able to turn matters around in such a timely fashion? Upon hitting rock bottom in 2016, the Nets brought in GM Sean Marks who hired head coach Kenny Atkinson. Marks and Atkinson believed in player development as a key to the Nets rebuild. Marks hired the right people to help him find talent and build off it. He hired lawyers, a number of them, to do capology and analytics. This is how a rebuild turned into an evolving winning culture. “I would say, not ahead of schedule, way ahead of schedule,” said Atkinson. “I was expecting year four, year five, that’s when we’ll start being in the playoff mix. I don’t know. Like I said, I think it’s a special, special year, special moment and very proud as an organization that we’ve come this far in a short time.” And it’s not over.
