Call On Courage

Call On Courage

A podcast for people looking to feel a bit braver about their work life. Bum jobs. Stuck. Skint. Adventures in freelancing. Took a lead role. Joined a start up. And now... I’m starting over. I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. At times it was exhilarating (and occasionally it was terrifying.) It takes stamina, guts and more than a smattering of resilience. Don’t panic, this isn’t another podcast telling you to hustle harder. I’ve been there and got the burnout badge to prove it. I'm looking to find people who are doing the work they love, but it's been a bumpy ride. Starting over can be wonderful, agony and pants shakingly scary all at the same time. There are others who did it. Who are right in the centre of figuring that out. I'm trying to find the people, I needed to hear, at the time I felt I was free-falling from the loop-di-loop. Keep being courageous, Rachael x

Have you found yourself feeling stifled or misunderstood in conversations that used to be energising and fun?Are you experiencing a lot of internal change and growth?Have you done an experiment of protecting what you let in, over creating more connection? As more of us come out of lockdown - we might begin to notice things don't flow quite the same relationally, as before. And that my friend could mean a lot of new changes are afoot.I ask some tricky and honest questions:Do you fear not being liked? What's the worst that can happen in that instance?Does the thing you're protecting outweigh the connection?Has your own growth sparked reactions in other people?Keep being courageous,Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Karen has been consistent and committed to leaning into her creative practice for over 20 years. She's a gifted artist I met at uni. Karen challenged me to keep hold of your artistic vision and integrity as a priority. We started working together and opened the door up to many creative adventures: making art in a remote Buddhist temple in rural Japan, doing sleep performances in a capsule hotel in Tokyo and getting to show our work on a school bus at Kyoto MoMA.Karen's creative courage is subtle and steady. She has expressed and drawn from research with scientists, sleep experts and academics. Producing work that is thoughtful, reflective and expressing complex ideas beautifully. Olga Thompson is better known as Big Fat Greek Mother. Her insta bio reads: Character skits, wigs and kebabs. I had the joy of finding her in lockdown - Olga's impressions, maverick characters and red lippy smile are a ray of sunshine from your phone. My guess about Olga's courage to perform wasn't quite right. Comedy and characters have been in her imagination and come naturally since being a kid. Sometimes it takes more guts to fully be yourself. Olga opens up to me about some of the fears she's conquered, why dress up should be celebrated and cracks out a range of class accents. We chat about why it's important for women to embrace stupidity and not waiting for fear to evaporate, before getting your own type of bonkers out there.Follow Olga here: www.instagram.com/big_fat_greekmotherKeep being courageous,Rachael xwww.calloncourage.com/podcast/big-fat-greek-motherWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Nicole breaks the bedroom geek image someone might have of a coder. She's passionate about software development and on an intensive bootcamp getting her coding skills honed. Nicole is early on in her career but what I loved when I discovered her - she's got a clear vision for sharing her journey in real time and being up front about the challenges of start up culture. We talk about steps of courage that changed her path. Making the leap from psychology graduate to learning code. And once she found herself in a tech start up, deciding to move on from a hustle led work environment. Nicole is carving a clear path - she feels leadership is an exciting key in unlocking a richer range of tech ideas for the future. She's keen to see the barriers to entering tech reduce.Follow Nicole's progress: www.instagram.com/nicole.youngKeep being courageous,Rachael xwww.calloncourage.com/podcast/nicole-youngWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Jess grabbed my attention on Instagram when she posted about a subject I hold dear: how to be a healthy creative. Self care and creativity go hand in hand. Like many other designers building their own companies - Jess' appreciation for this came on the tough road. She shares the reality of starting again after burnout. It wasn't easy and pretty scary taking time out to recover and figure out - what's not working for me anymore? Where are my old habits and behaviours not serving me or other people? These questions aren't easy. But what I admire about Jess, is her bravery for being prepared to go there and figure out how to move on and grow. We talk about boundaries, creating more space in life, our ego and the power we can unlock in being present in everyday things. If you've ever been tempted to operate in over work mode - Jess will convince you otherwise.Jess' Instagram: www.instagram.com/jessicaahorsfall/Keep being courageous,Rachael xwww.calloncourage.com/podcast/jess-horsfallWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. This is the episode to listen to, if you feel trapped in a job and want to hear about creative courage paying off beautifully. Micah's story is one of guts, grit and fantasy fiction. I've been privileged to get a front row seat of his story - he's a great friend and someone that consistently encourages me to do the creative work, I find hard to reach. Micah's experienced a ton of change and challenges - from breaking out of hum-drum 9 to 5, to published author. I like to remind him he's taken on the marathon running of creativity - writing and breathing life into rich and mythic worlds that are vivid and aching to be seen on screen. Both his books took very different time frames to write - Lost Gods was 12 years in the making and Pale Kings done in 5 months. His first novel, Lost Gods, was a Brave New Words finalist, and also nominated for a British Fantasy Award. Since we recorded this episode, Micah left care work and now works full time as a writer and content creator. My observation of Micah's creative courage - it has multiplied - in his own story and for others hearing it too.Lost Gods on AmazonPale Kings on AmazonKeep being courageous,Rachael xwww.calloncourage.com/podcast/micah-yongoWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Burt was hospitalised after a period in his life when he'd experienced a lot of loss and personal disappointments. His previous normal had been high capacity and making a lot of stuff happen. Burt's doctor told him he wouldn't be able to continue in any working environment that involved pressure or requiring mental stamina. That crushing knock was the start of a healing journey and internal re-wiring that led him to knowing love and acceptance in a new and powerful way. As his internal world shifted, he knew he needed to create a different way of working and new business idea. TLT (Tomorrow's Leaders in Training) was born, and within less than 12 months Burt was in conversation with the South African education department about how to deliver leadership skills into schools. Burt believes we are frequently mis-sold leadership. It's not a job title and you don't obtain it. Leadership is available to be built within anybody. It's something you can nurture and practice. He feels too many people miss out on experiencing, the gift that leadership can be.TLT now offers it's leadership training online.Wherever you are, go to tltprogram.co.za Or instagram.com/tlt_southafrica to discover more.Keep being courageous,Rachael xwww.calloncourage.com/podcast/burt-ronaldWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Anne grew up in Dublin, with a big obsession for music. She came of age in the 90s - at the height of Britpop - all rock and roll swagger and women on MTV with guitars. She went to a school mate's party and saw a girl place a Roots Manuva record on the decks. That was the ignition she needed to think, hmm maybe I could have a go at that.  Anne had already built up her vinyl collection, when she decided to invest in making her dream a reality. She purchased her first set of turntables and the classic DJ manual - 'How to DJ (properly)' by Bill Brewster. Bill is hailed as the DJs' DJ. Anne experienced her learning come full circle, getting to play at the same gig as him, before lockdown. Anne has built a varied and interesting career - she's had residencies at The Jazz Café, Spiritland and The Social. She's been booked by MGMT and Beth Ditto to do their after show parties and even graced the judging panel at The Brits. Her attitude to being creative is - hone your natural instincts and don't be a perfectionist.Discover more: djannefrankenstein.cominstagram.com/djannefrankensteinKeep being courageous,Rachael xwww.calloncourage.com/podcast/anne-frankensteinWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Here's a confessional for you - I've been locked down for a number of months, wondering (amongst other things) - what makes a man courageous? When people ask me what does your Dad do, I say he worked on cancer cures. Not exactly in a lab or near the patients. But he was the guy who made the software that analysed the data that they test the new drugs on. Did I get that right Dad? My Dad's story is one of extreme perseverance with work and turning round a tough financial situation. He barely had any work for a few years and decided to stop counting job applications after he hit 800 attempts. After that he just kept going until something changed. I've learnt tons from her attitude. On the quiet, she's sharing her grombre videos (that's grey + ombre hair colour if you're not there yet) to nearly 3 million people monthly on Tik Tok.Keep being courageous,Love Rachael xFind Clare on Tik Tok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZSTjxd6J/WHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Lockdown 3.0 here we go.What's it like when you're trying to build a creative business and nothing much is happening?Where do you find encouragement? What validates your creativity? What makes you uncomfortable before your audience has grown or shipping plenty of orders?I say you. I've been mainly asking these questions of myself in the last few months. I have no neat answers. But I am coming round to (slightly) appreciating the benefits of being hidden.Keep being courageous,Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Ever wondered what might have happened if Emma Watson hadn't landed the role of Hermione Granger? In a parallel universe, JK Rowling had Hermione's backstory starting out in Croydon, rather than Oxfordshire.Yep. Little known fact. My sista from a different mister auditioned for Harry Potter. Hannah is someone who I've known to be consistently courageous. The audition knock back at 10 years old, set Hannah up well for choosing a fast paced career in law.In this episode we get into the tricky zone of courage in friendship and what challenges come with facing up or backing out of difficult conversations with friends.Keep being courageous,Love Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. Alice is one of those brilliant women I bumped into at church and bonded with over music and many a night out. 10 years on I’ve seen her take on many challenges with her career and creativity. In this episode Alice opens up about a difficult year of unemployment. She’d been ace-ing it in a dream job and worked at a director level in an arts company. She felt the time was right to move on but things didn’t quite turn out as expected.Especially when you find yourself cleaning up toenail clippings for cash in Didsbury. Alice talks from the rough edge of experience and finding a quiet, steely, day by day courage.Keep being courageous,Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. I met Rebekah through Ladies who UX. She has drive, a natural knack for bringing people together and impeccable dress sense. Hmm, I knew we'd get on great. Rebekah has a beautiful intellect and incredibly humble with it. She pushes for better and got an ability to open, What if...? questions in other people. She's challenged her creativity to go from digital design into the the new realm (and often misunderstood) world of service design. Big companies are complex and service design offers problem solving across the breadth of a company. Rebekah also has a passion for leadership. She's keen to see more creatives step up. I asked her how much she'd charge to be my design mentor. She laughed and said she wanted to be my friend. So that's what happened. I'm massively grateful to call her that.Keep being courageous,Love Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. At times it was exhilarating (and occasionally it was terrifying.) This is Tony, he's my brother from another mother. We grew up in Preston together. We started hanging out in a big group of friends at 17. It was obvious he was destined for a life focused on joy, people and connection. One of life's brilliant storytellers.Tony started out in law, then did a media agency and then went into comedy. He met his wife Clare, at a gig. They have two children and live in Manchester. He lives a life that's honest, real and with some audiences, a bit white knuckle. He's full of stories and has a ton of courage.Keep being courageous,Love Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. At times it was exhilarating (and occasionally it was terrifying.) What happens when you go for a hard to reach dream; make it happen; and then change your mind?Anna knew from elementary school she had her sights set on computer science. Not just dabbling in it as a hobby, but diving in and skilling up in her teens. She held a question that focused her, What do I need to do to get a job to Facebook? She leaned into that dream and went for it. And achieved it. In a world of choice overwhelm, choosing to develop a sharp focus to become an expert at something, especially early on, can really make you stand out.But then came the moment of realising there was something else after all the study, dedication and late nights. Something that was missing. And couldn't be ignored.Anna's U turn was a sharp one.Keep being courageous,Love Rachael xDiscover more about Anna here: https://www.intentionallyanna.com/WHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. At times it was exhilarating (and occasionally it was terrifying.) Here's a voice you might recognise... from Rochdale, a comedy foil to Radcliffe and Maconie and bridging the music gap between classical and the avant garde. It's Elizabeth Alker off the radio. Affectionately known as Alkerpops by most. (Or Alker-traz and Alker-seltzer by Guy Garvey).I met Elizabeth a few years ago and had a friend's view of what it takes to do a career in the music industry. She's reported from Glastonbury, The NME Awards, The Proms and The Brits. She's brave, curious and possesses a wealth of music knowledge. Keep being courageous,Love Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. At times it was exhilarating (and occasionally it was terrifying.)
