It’s been a while since I’ve had a personal friend on the show so it was great chatting with professional roller skater Frances McGee, aka Abominatrix. We had a great talk about the places roller skating has taken her, how she got her start and what teaching new skaters, like me, how to flow while learning. Not many people get to work in a field they love and Frances knows how fortunate she is to be able to share her passion with others. She shares her skate journey start in Hawaii, her bumps and bruises from her derby career and traveling around the West Coast for teaching seminars.Give Frances a follow on her social media pages to see where she is heading next and sign up for a lesson from one of the best …..Connect with Frances McGee on her social media pages: Website, Instagram, YouTubeABOUT Frances McGeebe love in action, own your motivation. For 14 years I’ve been passionate about creating holistic learning experiences on skates. Sharing the empowering benefits of kinetic alignment with beginner skaters and beyond…I started in 2007, skating around Oahu, Hawaii, protesting in support of marriage equality. To me roller skating is a form of self expression I could aim towards any challenge. In a way, it led back to my voice… That one true power in us all. It goes that deep, it's genetic, it is heritage, it is American History. My Grandmother and Great Uncle, both black elders, were roller skating since the ‘40s & '50s, competing on soul nights, navigating segregation and pitching in during the civil rights movement. Into the OG roller derby days in Kansas City, KS with my Uncle bounced bouts. Decades later, my eldest cousin continues with tradition, traveling the country contributing to the culture in regional skate party scenes. And here I am tapping into the resurgence of derby in the 2000s, diving into the civil rights movement of today. Proudly representing my passion, my family roots, and my Black cultural history.I believe in my heart that skating finds a person within an evolution of self,Or a life transition. Roller skating found me when I felt like my life was no longer worth living. I started skating when my epilepsy was in a bad place. It was the worst bout of seizures I’ve had in my life. I felt trapped in my body, home, work, and relationship. Without graduating college and I didn’t see a way out. Let alone, how I fit into traditional roles of a 'successful' woman. I needed to connect to the child within me that knew joy. Those formative early years on skates helped me find perspective, get venerable, accept my health and body for the gift of each new day. I also found the power as an artist to create freely on roller skates. Follow my feed for calming skate videos, tutorials, seminars, and workshops and a look into how I combine roller skating with the fight for social justice.SUBSCRIBEYou can subscribe to The Travel Wins Podcast on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, YouTube, iHeart Radio, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, Spreaker, Podnews, Castbox, Pocket Casts, Radio Public, and Amazon. The Travel Wins intro song by Allison Johnson and Steve StevensWebsite Design by Stack Host#abominatrix #francesmcgee #rollerskate

Chronic Tacos is the center of my podcast with Michael Mohammed and Randy Wyner. It was a great opportunity to speak with the two men behind the past, current and future plans of a growing Mexican food chain. As we start to come out of the worldwide pandemic, I was really interested to hear how the closures affected their business and what their future plans are now. Both have traveled extensively for their restaurant business so I was able to ask how they balance business schedules, travel schedules, friends and family.A background of Chronic Tacos starts in Orange County, California, where you could find a Mexican taqueria on every corner. The food was great, but there was an opportunity to create a taco shop with not only authentic Mexican food, but with a unique vibe inspired by their Southern California roots - the Taco Life was born, and the first Chronic Tacos swung open its doors in 2002.Michael Mohammed is the Chief Executive Officer and President at Chronic Tacos Enterprises, Inc., where he oversees the strategic vision of the fast casual Mexican restaurant brand. Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Michael attended Saint Martin’s University in Washington State, where he earned a Bachelors of Business Administration and a Masters of Business Administration. Michael and his three brothers first became affiliated with Chronic Tacos in 2010 when they helped finance the chain’s expansion into CanadaRandy Wyner is the founder of Chronic Tacos, the Southern California chain of fast-casual Mexican food restaurants. Born and raised in Orange County, Randy draws his inspiration from the distinct Californian food culture. Randy grew up on authentic Mexican food and signature So Cal taquerias. It was his belief that the tastiest taquerias tended to be small, family-owned shops that led him to open his first Taco shop using third generation family recipes he acquired from a close family friend. When Randy was struck with the idea of made-to-order Mexican food that was both fast and fresh, Chronic Tacos was born.SUBSCRIBEYou can subscribe to The Travel Wins Podcast on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, YouTube, iHeart Radio, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, Spreaker, Podnews, Castbox, Pocket Casts, Radio Public, and Amazon. The Travel Wins intro song by Allison Johnson and Steve StevensWebsite Design by Stack Host#chronictacos #tacos #californiatacos

Payton Howie is a country singer and songwriter with roots in California that are now spreading to Texas and Nashville. Payton talks about her live performances during the lockdown and how her tour schedule is starting to open up with more and more shows being booked. With the release of her latest single “Freedom” we talked about her new EP and the importance of performing her own songs versus cover songs.I asked Payton how or if she felt her athletic background has helped her singing and performing career. Let me know if you agree or disagree with her answers. Make sure to check out her singles on all of the music platforms and keep your eyes out for her “Freedom” music video on CMT.ABOUT Payton HowieWith backwoods bathed vocals and bona fide southern swagger, Payton Howie is leading the next generation of redneck women. Branded as the ultimate ‘All American Girl’ by Scenes Media, Howie unapologetically embodies the untamed tradition that country music was built on, and she’s hell-bent on bringing her own grit to the honky tonk. Not many can say they’ve shared the stage with the likes of Carrie Underwood, and Howie is one of even fewer who can say they were handpicked to do so at the age of 5; while other kids were learning how to ride a bike, she was teaching people to expect the unexpected whenever they hear the name Payton Howie. Her most recent single “Freedom” was featured on several of Spotify’s sought after editorial playlists, and the accompanying music video bleeds red, white and blue. On the verge of releasing her debut EP, Payton Howie is prepared to scorch country music with a brand that’s hers alone.SUBSCRIBEYou can subscribe to The Travel Wins Podcast on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, YouTube, iHeart Radio, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, Spreaker, Podnews, Castbox, Pocket Casts, Radio Public, and Amazon. The Travel Wins intro song by Allison Johnson and Steve StevensWebsite Design by Stack Host#paytonhowie #countrysinger #songwriter

After a successful career as a freestyle wrestler, Reusing dominated the super-heavyweight division as a colored belt, before joining the black belt brackets in July 2019. During her first 6 months in BJJ’s professional division, Kendall conquered the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) World No-Gi Championship in both her weight and the absolute division (open weight), cementing her status as one of the top tier athletes in the sport. She has traveled around the states for competitions and training seminars. The demands for traveling will only increase as her skills are showcased more and more. Kendall’s father, Tom Reusing had moved from the southeastern state of Georgia to California, years before she was born to study jiu-jitsu and gradually instilled in his daughter the same love for martial arts.By the time Kendall was 7, she was already practicing BJJ (with coach Ricardo Guimarães and dad, Tom) as well as judo, sports she broke from as a 13-year-old, to focus on her wrestling career. Reusing spent the following 6 years on those wrestling mats, winning a California State Championship, as well as 4 US National Championships in high school. In 2012 Reusing started wrestling with Team USA internationally, training at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs for a few years, competing at the World Teams and several international teams tournaments at various levels, going on represent the Simon Fraser University (British Columbia) for 1 year (2015-2016), before returning to California, and jiu-jitsu, in 2016.Once home, Kendall Reusing quickly made up for lost time, conquering some of the top events available in BJJ’s colored belt divisions. Mona May is a costume designer for movies and television who travels the world for her career while her costumes have become iconic. I was fortunate to reach her on a short break between two film projects happening on different continents. While getting her start as a costume designer in the film “Clueless” as her first major project she was able to secure her future work by creating iconic outfits that are still copied two decades later. She has a storied career working with celebrities like Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Nicole Kidman, Emma Stone, Jennifer Aniston, Eva Mendez, Nicolas Cage, Eddie Murphy, Demi Moore, Anna Farris, Will Ferrell and many more.It was a great talking about what it takes to make it as a costume designer in the entertainment business and interesting to find out that it’s not all glamour and red carpet events. We talked about her mentoring people looking to get in to her field and how many of them find out that it can be more work than glamour. She uses her own experiences to help make sure others don’t make the same mistakes she did.Like I said to Mona in the interview…..you know you “made it” when they take your design ideas and turn them in to Halloween costumes. She has definitely “made it” and I can’t wait to see her latest work.About Mona MayMona May exploded onto the scene with the release of CLUELESS, a film that raised the status of fashion in film. The New York Times, Vogue Magazine, and Women's Wear Daily proclaimed CLUELESS & "the fashion movie of the year” and introduced a bold new Costume Designer to the world Capturing the rich-girl prep style with plaid skirts, knee-high socks, platform Mary Janes and feather-trim coats, Cher’s (Alicia Silverstone) more than 60 costume changes were fresh, new and unusual, and created a vibrant style to emulate for a generation of girls learning how to dress.May’s trademark joie de vivre is clearly evident in her work, and it injects bold, sexy confidence into her designs. She is a master at designing costumes that flatter her actors’ body types, while simultaneously hitting pitch-perfect visual notes for the character they are portraying. May’s dedication to the art of creating characters with fabric, textures, and color goes far beyond simply dressing the actors. It is an art that spans genres, time periods, and even media - ranging from live-action to CGI to classic cel animation - and creating a costume that moves believably from the real world to a virtual world is an intricate process. For STUART LITTLE 2, designing an entire wardrobe for a 4" digital mouse meant working closely with the visual effects team at Sony Imageworks to balance May's creative vision with that of director Rob Minkoff. The process starts with a sketch, before going to a virtual tailor, followed by a texture mapper and finally the lighting designer. Every detail, from the textures and patterns on the fabrics to the scale and placement of trims and buttons, are executed to May’s exact specifications. There are times, however, when a director must rely on a designer's ingenuity for a character's technical effects. While filming THE HAUNTED MANSION, Mona created a "glow" that could be photographed in both live-action and CG. She experimented with a paint process using Scotchlite powder applied to fabric, allowing the ghost costumes to glow as if the actors were lit from within, and saving the production from using expensive CG effects. The film also allowed her to demonstrate her exquisite tailoring and eye for detail, evidenced by the extraordinary costumes for stars Eddie Murphy, Terrance Stamp, and Wally Shawn. In the film ENCHANTED, Susan Sarandon's evil Queen Narissa required a technically-challenging costume requiring a seamless transition from 2D-animation (cartoon character) to live-action (human actor) to a computer-generated rendering that morphs into a CGI dragon while retaining remnants of the original costume. For the costume, May designed a reptilian leather corset and skirt with a cape fashioned to look like wings, and during Narissa’s dragon metamorphosis, the skirt’s layers wrapped around like a tail and the crown transformed into horns.Aside from movie work, May is always inspired to share her passion, originality and technical experience with the future designers at OTIS Parsons, FIDM and Pasadena Art Center, where she is a frequent lecturer.Born in India to European parents, May was raised in Warsaw, and later Berlin. She studied fashion in Europe, New York and Los Angeles, experiencing a global education that gave her the unique point of view she brings to her work.SUBSCRIBEYou can subscribe to The Travel Wins Podcast on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, YouTube, iHeart Radio, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, Spreaker, Podnews, Castbox, Pocket Casts, Radio Public, and Amazon. The Travel Wins intro song by Allison Johnson and Steve StevensWebsite Design by Stack Host#monamay #costumes #designer

Those thoughts turned to concept, and the stylish Loop Neighborhood chain was born. The first Loop store opened in June 2013, bringing with it a fresh feel with a vibrant orange hue and modern design touches, an aspirational product mix including wine and a salad bar, and the arduous, stake-in-the-ground designation as a member of the Partnership for a Healthier America.Since the concept launched, Loop has expanded with a mobile app and loyalty program and developed a smaller-footprint concept, Lil’ Loop.Loop StoryWelcome to Loop Neighborhood! We are your all-in-one convenience store and marketplace. Our goal is simple—we want to redefine the convenience retail store by offering exceptional items that are good for you; excellent customer service and a fantastic experience from the time you enter our stores. At Loop, we strive to provide our customers with everything from a wide variety of fresh foods to daily grocery items which meet their needs and seating areas which give them the opportunity to relax. We take pride in supporting active and healthy lifestyles by carrying organic, natural and gluten free products. We even have salad bars, espresso and frozen yogurt to ensure our customers have a place to go during breakfast, lunch or dinner. We encourage people to hang out with Wi-Fi and seating if you want to enjoy your lunch or simply stop in to get some work done while on the road.We are proud to be recognized for our thoughtfully crafted stores and to be highlighted for things like our centrally placed counter, great lighting, and welcoming atmosphere. We’ve been named to CSP’s Best Store Design list in the upscale category and have been highlighted by numerous industry publications detailing our concept and the people behind it.We opened our first Loop store in Santa Clara in June 2013 and we've now expanded to 30+ locations throughout the Bay Area, Sacramento and Southern California. We’ve also evolved into the future with a fully autonomous Loop NanoStore in Silicon Valley and smaller footprint concept we call Lil’ Loop in Sacramento.Stop by and check it all out at a near-by Loop Neighborhood store.
