Chloe Made Me Study

Chloe Burroughs

This podcast provides simple studying advice for non-traditional students returning to education to advance their careers. You’re in the right place if you’re a mature student, distance or workplace learner (or all three like Chloe) and studying for a degree or professional qualification. Chloe Burroughs, study skills expert and author of The Return to Study Handbook, will teach you how to study effectively so that you can boost your academic confidence, get more done in less time, and achieve the grades you really want.

Chloe understands what you’re going through — the stress of juggling studying around your job and personal life; the feeling that you’ve never actually been taught how to study effectively; the worry that you’re not going to achieve the grades you need to move forward in your career. You’ll learn step-by-step strategies for time management, organisation and productivity; boosting your studying motivation and confidence; overcoming negative thinking and fear of exams; note taking and reading; essay writing and critical thinking; improving your memory; and exam revision and preparation. In short, you’ll develop the skills to make the most of the time, energy and money you’re investing in your education — so you can gain your dream qualification.

#101 – Wanna know the secret to achieving academic success? Well I can tell you straight away that I don’t mean your level of intelligence or how much effort you put into your studies. It can be pretty easy to compare ourselves to other students, right? To see other students achieve the grades and results that we want and to assume this is because they’re smarter or ‘just more academic’ than we are. Well I’m pleased to say that I’m going to clear up this misinformation in today’s episode and I’m going to share with you the TRUE secret to achieving academic success. Because the differences in your outcomes compared to the outcomes of more successful students comes down to something you have complete control over – your approach. I’m going to walk you through some powerful ideas in today’s episode to help you realise that the secret to achieving academic success is completely attainable. You’ll likely engage in each of these levels of learning at different times throughout your studies.  Each has its uses but it’s SUPER important that you’re using the right one at the right time...so you don’t throw away marks or waste time on ineffective studying. The first of the levels of learning will allow you to get through your studies quicker, but could hold you back from achieving great grades. You’ll get through the important parts of your studying related to your assessments, and you’ll quickly make progress towards your learning goals. In this episode I’m going to walk you through these 3 levels of learning and then help you work out which one(s) are best for you right now – for your motivation, course and studying situation. #073 – Who comes up with the studying timelines we’re supposed to stick to? Us? The education system? Society? We live in a world where it’s still seen as ‘different’ and ‘non-traditional’ to still be in education past your early twenties. But we also live in a world that’s telling us we need to become life-long learners, that we’ll have multiple careers, and that we need to continually upskill ourselves. No wonder our studying timelines are all out of whack. In this episode I’m going to talk all about these unrealistic, stressful studying timelines we can put on ourselves. I’ll cover goal setting, managing expectations and where failure comes from. And I’ll share all about the very necessary distinction between healthy striving and healthy slowing down – that we need BOTH to become life-long learners without burning out. So pop me in your earbuds, this one’s a goodie. To get the links and shownotes for this episode, head to: https://chloeburroughs.com/episode73. #063 – Sitting an exam in person, in an exam hall, can be a pretty stressful experience. But in-person exams have been the norm for most universities forever so it may feel a little daunting to have to sit an online exam at home. Or you may be thinking ‘yippee!’ at the thought of an online exam. Because they DO have their upsides. But they do require a different revision strategy than an in-person exam. When it’s less about memorisation and more about application...your revision strategies need to change. Yes, you may get to have your books and notes around to help, but that can actually cause more issues than it solves. In the past year I’ve worked with A LOT of students who took their first ever online exam from home...and failed...because they didn’t take it seriously, or because they didn’t think their exam strategy would have to change. In this episode, I’m going to share with you my simple 7-step process to help you plan and revise effectively for an online exam. #057 – Do you ever find yourself diving into writing without much planning before you start your essay? I see this A LOT with the students I work with and a few things tend to happen:– the writing process takes a lot longer– the writing process is more stressful– they end up having to cut loads of words that aren’t relevant– they go off on tangents and don’t answer the question– they get lower grades because of it. I don’t want this to happen to you. Instead, follow my simple planning process before you start your essay, and you’ll find the whole process much easier AND you’ll achieve higher grades. In this episode, I take you through a worked example essay question, and teach you the 7 simple but powerful questions you should ask yourself before you start your essay to ensure your arguments are strong, coherent, and that you actually answer the task you’ve been set.  To get the links and shownotes for this episode, head to: https://chloeburroughs.com/episode57.
