Conversation with K. Thomas. In another episode of QBC Conversations, an offshoot of The Quarantine Book Club, author and writer Rance Denton interviews award-winning author K. Thomas about her debut contemporary fantasy TIME TO WAKE and talks a little about its upcoming follow-up NOT RIGHT NOW.  *Special Note* In this episode, we attempt to discuss those who may be differently abled. Even as a comedy podcast we attempt to handle these discussions with respect and understanding. Sometimes we don't use the right language, or terminology. We accept that learning is part of a journey in attempting to better ourselves. Rather than edit the episode, and make things appear perfectly squeaky clean, we prefer to air as recorded, mistakes all. We at the QBC acknowledge we don't always get it right, but we strive to, and we strive to do better. If our mistakes help someone, then that's all we can ask for. We also will always gladly accept criticism and suggestions to make our understanding and affinity to minority groups stronger, so please reach out if you feel there is something we can improve upon. We stand by what we say at the end of every episode. Stay safe, be kind to each other, and do the work. This week the guys welcome Thomas E. Staples, author and internet hermit to the show to discuss his fabulously ridiculous book, The Case of the Giant Carnivorous Worm. P.S. This podcast is NSFW. Sometimes you don't have a book scheduled, but you do have a chance to talk about two of the most influential and famous fantasy franchises in existence. This week the guys delve into the statements recently made by R.A. Salvatore regarding the recognition and attempts to course correct racist tropes in his Legend of Drizzt series based in the Dungeons and Dragons setting of the Forgotten Realms. They talk implications for both the books and the game of D&D itself, as well as the respect and care Salvatore has put into making these changes. Our heroes then spend some time discussing how many butthurt little neckbeard babies there are out there crying about the new Masters of the Universe: Revelation series. *Spoiler alert* They think you're an idiot if you're upset about it. Finally, Bob, being a Masters of the Universe TRUE FAN, gives Rance a difficult quiz based on the original cartoon, and 80's movie era of the franchise. P.S. This podcast is NSFW.  Please do not hold your device above your head while around co-workers or children proclaiming you "have the power," or you'll probably be fired/punched in the face by a parent. *************************************** THIS WEEK'S SUBJECTS: The Legend of Drizzt series by R.A. Sometimes you pick up a book and that book is insufferably bad and full of casual racism, yet somehow seems to get good reviews on Amazon and GoodReads. This week, friend of the show Keith Burgers joins us to talk about a really one of a kind derivative fart-fest. The guys spend a decent amount of time avoiding actually talking about the book itself. Rance and Keith attempt to diagnose what is clearly Bob's Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and instead coin the title of this week's episode, Butt-Guggles. Aren't you glad you joined us? P.S. This podcast is NSFW.  We yelled and cussed a lot this episode. Trigger Warning: Discussions of sexual situations, and sexual assault in the context of the book, and conversations about severe depression. Sometimes you pick up a book and get a chance to embarrass yourself in front if it's author. This week the guys discuss The Immaculate Void with author Brian "The Brain" Hodge (Shhhhhhh. He doesn't actually go by The Brain.) Our hosts pander like pathetic fanbois to another author, stumble over their words, talk over their guest, and generally yell really loud things while Brian puts up with their bullshit. We learn that the one author Rance doesn't actually have a desire to fistfight is willing to throw down, and so he cowers and backtracks while Bob mocks him. The show covers both the serious and the stupid, and somehow by the skin of their teeth, the fellas manage not to make Brian walk right the hell out of the zoom meeting. P.S. Sometimes an author is asked to write a book because they're a fan of a certain series or character. Sometimes they do it for the love of the game... or is it a soulless paycheck? The world seems to be getting more and more confusing every day, but we're always here to have some fun, hopefully meaningful and thoughtful discussions.  We may not be able to take your mind off of things, but hopefully we can provide a space for you to think about things safely and critically. This week we are discussing Dreadnought by April Daniels. We're excited to tackle a book that features a transgendered main character by a trans author. As a pair of cisgendered white men, we hope you accept our apologies for any terminology or informational mistakes we might make in this week's episode. We believe representation is important, and welcome any constructive and helpful comments or criticisms. You can find our contact information down below. This week say goodbye to both the shit show that has been 2020, as well as the classic sci-fi novel Dune. This week we begin a new season and a new book. The guys begin to dig into the classic Dune, and show relief and new life after a short hiatus, and a book that isn't trash! WARNING!  Not Safe For High School Babies! We apologize for the delay in getting this episode out! This week our heroes discuss the "Audiobook" Halloween: The Scream Factory by Kelly O'Rourke read by The 80's Slasher Librarian. We have no real way of expressing how horrendous this turd is. The brothers invite friend Lynette (the only other person stupid enough to read this trash) to discuss this high school level gym sock jerk rag. The whole group get mad, sad, and other emotions that end with "ad" about this strange and unusual find.  At the end of the day, we all decide that some things should just be left with the modicum of understanding that they are intended for adults, and the Halloween franchise is most definitely one of them. P.S. If your mayor asks you to plan a party, only do it if he's not sweaty, bald, and clearly hiding something.  *************************************** THIS WEEK'S BOOK: Halloween: The Scream Factory by Kelly O'Rourke read by The 80's Slasher Librarian. WARNING!  Not like you need the reminder, but this nightmare is NSFW! We apologize for the delay in getting this episode out!  October is a silly month for us! Please bear with us. This week our heroes discuss the "Audiobook" excerpt Nightmares on Elm Street: Freddy Krueger’s Seven Sweetest Dreams, Asleep at the Wheel by Brian Hodge, narrated by the 80's Slasher Librarian. We discover that not every long hidden nightmare has to end in suffering and a week of sadness. The brothers go for a ride on the spooky side, and meet up with everyone's favorite dream demon along the way. Rance finds an author he finally doesn't want to challenge to fisticuffs, and smiles and says "uh huh," a lot to Rance's scholarly analysis of the subject matter.  At the end of the day, the guys find that sometimes if you sift though enough poop, eventually you might find a diamond someone swallowed by accident. P.S. If you're having nightmares, don't come crying to us.  That sh*t is contagious, and nobody over here wants to catch a case of the Freddys.  *************************************** THIS WEEK'S BOOK: Freddy Krueger’s Seven Sweetest Dreams, Asleep at the Wheel by Brian Hodge, narrated by the 80's Slasher Librarian. WARNING!  This pretty much this entire month's content will be NSFW! We apologize for the delay in getting this episode out!  October is a silly month for us! Please bear with us. We'll be back on schedule by the end of the month! This week our heroes discuss the "Audiobook" Friday the 13th: Mother's Day by Eric Morse, narrated by the 80's Slasher Librarian. We find a really mediocre young adult book, a strange author, and a whole big mess of confusion surrounding the writing of the book, and who actually did so. The guys discover that some things are not meant for kids, or even teens. And sometimes, maybe we should just let sleeping masks stay buried. Our Audience gets introduced to the 80's Slasher Librarian, a man who has kindly made it his task to suffer through the trash licensed horror series books of the past, and share discontinued content to the rest of the world's unsuspecting souls. The brothers invite a guest Moose along for this week's ride. Rance makes fun of and challenges yet another "author" to a fist fight, Bob is generally amused at how much like an actual Friday the 13th book this is, and Moose seems to be really bored with the guys not being able to keep their shit together long enough to make a full episode work. P.S. How many teens are we gonna let die before we just bulldoze Camp Crystal Lake right into the water? *************************************** THIS WEEK'S BOOK: Friday the 13th: Mother's Day by Eric Morse, narrated by the 80's Slasher Librarian. WARNING!  This "book," this "podcast," and its stupid "hosts" are all  NSFW! We apologize for the delay in getting this episode out!  October is a silly month for us! Please bear with us. We'll be back on schedule by the end of the month! This week our heroes discuss the Audible "Audiobook" adaptation of Ghostbusters 1 and 2 by Richard Mueller, and Ed Naha, narrated by Johnny Heller. It's a mess.  You'll walk away feeling like you've been covered in slime... of some type. The guys discover that they didn't remember that the Ghostbusters (except the ever underused Winston) are scumbags of the first degree.  They reminice on when the franchise of Ghostbusters wasn't tainted with the spectre of sexual assult and gross narrative negligence. (Spoiler: that was never. Being a child when first consuming something, and then making an effort to throw away your rose-tinted glasses can help a lot in lerning how problematic something you used to love is.) The brothers wrestle with how to differentiate sexual predator from sex pest (More spoilers: there is no difference).  Rance gets mad about the book and the narration right out of the box, and Bob is finally convinced he has actually found something that has destroyed his childhood.  There's no saving you. There is no one to call. Final summation? Ghostbusters is and always has been made up of a gross sex predator, a man child, a weird emotionless automaton who does not understand basic human interaction, and a hero. Also, Dana should have run away as soon as she met them, instead of going back for gross partner seconds at the end of Ghostbusters 2 P.S. This week your old pals Uncle Bobbo and Weird Cousin Rance rebel after making a kids friendly episode.  Do not let your kids listen along to this one.  There's literally cursing in the first minute of spoken audio.   Our hosts rant about the fact that they really enjoyed this book- wait, WHAT?  There's some discussion about the positives and negatives of this story, but we can all agree David Tenant's narration is great.  The guys get pissed about gatekeeping grown-ass men complaining about kids enhoying things made for kids.  Like games and kids books.  Bob gets so upset he attacks a YouTuber based on his weight, and Rance chellenges the same dude to a fight.  That's kind of his thing, apparenty. Rance also can't figure out how noise gate works, so he cuts out a lot. In all seriousness, we made an episode you can listen to in an effort to help recommend fun reading for kids, but also let them decide if they would like it too, so go back to the previous ep if you want to hear that! Hey there!  This week your old pals Uncle Bobbo and Weird Cousin Rance make a kids friendly episode.  Feel free to listen along in the car on your way to drop your kids off to your ex-wife, or sitting at the dinner table trying not to yell at them for eating their squash.  Heck, use it as a reward, telling them you'll turn it off if they do.  Or that you'll play it if they don't!  Your choice! In all seriousness, we made an episode you can listen to in an effort to help recommend fun reading for kids, but also let them decide if they would like it too! We split this episode into two parts so you don't forget to stop it when we change over to the adults only section of the podcast, where we do our usual dumb stuff. P.S. WARNING!  There's a good amount of cursing in this episode.  It must be NSFW! This week our heroes continue to discuss the Audible "Audiobook" adaptation of Alien 3 by William Gibson, and compare it to the original movie version of the entry with the same name. The guys invite pal Mike on to the show to talk about the Alien franchise, but also mostly just to show off his cool toys and stuff. The brothers have a serious revelation that Alien 3 the movie is way better than remembered, and definitely better than the Audible version of the original unfilmed treatment.  Rance does a really uncomfortable impression, and slides in and out of existence early in the episode.  Mike pulls out the coolest airsoft pistol ever, but it still doesn't help his body odor.  We finish the episode with another of Rance's infuriating quizzes, but with a surprise ending.  P.S. WARNING!  At this point we have given up any pretense that this podcast might ever be anything but NSFW! This week our heroes discuss the Audible "Audiobook" adaptation of Alien 3 by William Gibson.  They find out way too late that they've been ASMRed into yet another Dirk Maggs production. The guys get right into spoilers for this several years old audio production, and are not happy about it.  They discuss Gibson's impact on the sci-fi genre, and why this offering is weak as hell, and who is to blame (surprise, the conclusion is Dirk Maggs). The brothers share their incompetence and lack of knowledge about the Alien franchise as a whole.  Rance skirts around his dislike for multiple entries in the franchise, and Bob blows his mind with a theory about the Aliens series and it's meaning as a whole.  As usual, it has to do with something naughty, and general disdain for parenthood.  The episode finishes up with some conversations about some stuff, but why are you still reading this?  Go listen to the dang episode.  P.S. School is coming.  It's not the end of the world, but if someone else says "The new normal" everyone gonna flip shit. *************************************** THIS WEEK'S BOOK: Alien 3 By William Gibson, Directed by Dirk Maggs Find it here:https://www.audible.com/pd/Alien-III-Audiobook/B07QY3KR81 THIS EPISODE’S MUSIC: Our theme music is: “First Strike” Music by: Jacob Lizotte. WARNING!  This is assuredly NSFW! This week our heroes discuss the second half of the Audible "Audiobook" adaptation of DC/Vertigo classic, The Sandman, by Neil Gaiman and Dirk Maggs. The guys are once again joined by resident Gaiman expert and sibling, Lithia.  The group don't disagree this week, and come to the conclusion that the conclusion of this book should perhaps never have been produced.  There's much less sibling arguing and much more collective yelling at the book, it's creators, and our stream audience. Our trio have no idea what to do most of the episode, as they're stumped (or at least Rance and Lithia are stumped) as to how this adaptation went from smooth to rough to RUFF RUFF between last reading and this one.  Rance hammers on the fake Sandman theme a lot, Lithia watches a beloved franchise get farted on, and yes, Bob falls out of his chair.  Is it shock?  Surprise?  Maybe just plain stupidity.  Maybe all three!  Tune in and find out. WARNING!  Probably a majority NSFW! (Due to the nature of this week's recording, there may be a few minor audio glitches.  We're working on improving our recording methodology.  We're sorry for any issues.  Please enjoy the episode!) This week our heroes discuss the Audible "Audiobook" adaptation of DC/Vertigo classic, The Sandman, by Neil Gaiman and Dirk Maggs. They also invite their sister from the Same Mother, Sandman aficionado, Lithia.  The group discuss various disagreements and agreements about what may possibly be one of the most overproduced pieces of content Audible has ever spewed forth.  Our hosts get mad at each other for multiple reasons, because what else are siblings good for? Bob and Rance both act like content hogs, and speak over and interrupt their guest multiple times, but manage to keep the "well actually-ing" to a minimum.  Bob hates the book, and makes no qualms about sharing that information, even though he can't really give a solid reason why.  Rance praises the book, and makes no qualms about sharing that information, even though he can't really give a solid reason why.  Lithia fangirls out about the book, and makes no qualms about being disgusted that she came from the same womb as Rance and Bob, even though the universe has no solid reason why.  At the end of the day, everyone is just happy that Lith's husband decides to make a cameo because he wants his cold brew coffee, dammit. P.S. You rock.  Keep going.  You got this. *************************************** THIS WEEK'S BOOK: The Sandman By Neil Gaiman and Dirk Maggs Find it here:https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Sandman-Audiobook/B086WP794Z?ref=mrq_aud_sndmn_pser1&source_code=MRQOR13307142003UG&device=d&&cvosrc=ppc.google.the%20sandman%20audio&cvo_campaign=1859944452&cvo_crid=449246324770&Matchtype=e&gclid=CjwKCAjwps75BRAcEiwAEiACMWONGm6uyZR6j9vAweWUjZs-1mVoiZkAYh1Cq_eYENOcgdGIyDSS8xoCOW4QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds THIS EPISODE’S MUSIC: Our theme music is: “First Strike” Music by: Jacob Lizotte. WARNING! Kinda sorta NSFW! (Due to the nature of this week's recording, there may be a few minor audio glitches.  We're working on improving our recording methodology.  We're sorry for any issues.  Please enjoy the episode!) This week our heroes continue their foray into Dresden files, finishing the latest book, Peace Talks.  There's some mixed feelings about the book as a whole, but nobody is terribly unhappy or disappointed.  What a let down. The guys continue to wrestle with the nuances of live episodes, and find that sometimes maybe we should invest in a pop filter.  Our hosts dive really deep into spoilers, and give a very unstructured feedback to the reading in question. Rance brings up very valid, educated and deeply thought out analysis of the book, like an English teacher should.  Bob makes way out there predictions, and compares the book to Empire Strikes Back.  Finally, the episode wraps up with the boys discussing who they would pick to play the characters in a movie version of The Dresden Files. WARNING! Kinda sorta NSFW! (Due to the nature of this week's recording, there may be a few minor audio glitches.  We're sorry for any issues.  Please enjoy the episode!) This week our heroes take a trip into the land of the Dresden files, and read the latest book, Peace Talks.  5 years in the waiting, our hosts have been chomping at the bit for this installment while the world changed around them, and they changed to fit the world.  For once, it seems to have worked out for the guys. For the first time, the brothers attempt to run the show live.  It seems to have succeeded.  Mostly.  We introduce a new feature to the show, a 30 minute Spoiler Free Quarantine Zone, so as not to ruin the book for fans of the series that haven't picked it up yet. Rance gives Bob another insufferably incomprehensible quiz that makes him unhappy.  Bob writes a letter about white knights.  Everyone laughs about the fun time we had together.  We all go home feeling great about ourselves, the book, and the work we have accomplished. *SMOOCH!* *************************************** THIS WEEK'S BOOK: Peace Talks (A Novel of the Dresden Files) By Jim Butcher Find it here:https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/309658/peace-talks-by-jim-butcher/ THIS EPISODE’S MUISC: Our theme music is: “First Strike” Music by: Jacob Lizotte. In this special episode, Bob goes solo, and sounds like a public radio talk personality, while Rance takes a break because he is feeling under the weather.  He's ok, so don't start sending flowers. Just money. Bob stutters and yammers on for 26 insufferable minutes, but also makes some "important" announcements relating to the podcast.  We will be back to normal next week, but if you'd like to hear what's going on, and some very personal revelations, give this episode a listen. WARNING!  REALLY NSFW! In our filthiest episode yet, our heroes drive one joke so far into the ground, they mistake it for a foundation.  The curses pile up as the guys debate if this book is as bad as they think it is, or if they're just confused by Shatner's self-hero worship/humble bragging. Bob spouts out an insufferable amount of Star Trek trivia, and Rance admits the most he knows about Star Trek has to do with Shatner's spoken-word musical career.  The guys play a quiz, and don't scream in anger for once! We bet that Captain Kirk really likes food.  That's what the fork thing is about, right? Warning:  NSFW! Our heroes continue to get really upset about The Adventures of Tom Stranger, Interdimensional Insurance Agent, and it's "sequel."  The brothers get really confused about how Adam Baldwin chooses to say both "ambiance," and "poor people." Rance still wants to challenge our author to a fight, and Bob is looking for a light in the dark, but just gets fed up with the world.  Both hosts throw all caution to the wind and say the F word a LOT. We discover that our cool cool cool author believes people who have occupied a street are sissy, liberal, crybabies, that pooping in a bucket is the type of skill that won't get you anywhere in life, and gender studies degrees are just a big joke.  Like, SNL level satire joke. We finish the episode off with a really disturbing game, in which Rance shows off just how unstable these guys really sound.  Thank goodness the guys gave up their man buns, or Larry may have labeled them as hipster cucks. Warning:  NSFW! Our heroes finally dive into a series-long joke full throttle. The Adventures of Tom Stranger, Interdimensional Insurance Agent is a book written by a Libertarian, narrated by a Libertarian, for Libertarians.  Or babies.  Idiot babies.  Idiot Libertarian babies.  If you like to hear people get pissed about bad writing and paper-thin “jokes,” then this is the podcast for you!  Listen along as the guys fall into an episode long bout of confusion, anger, and sadness.  We have before us a study in contrasts.  Bob tries to give up the podcast after realizing that it will only ever bring him pain and sadness, and Rance hits a series high, repeatedly challenging the book’s author to a fight. At some point they kind of talk about the book, but in the end spend so much time crying, complaining, and trying to set up MMA fights, that they decide they need a second episode just to get all out all of their disgust. But, hey, they always pride themselves on superior customer service. Warning: NSFW!  Due to the truncated schedule and Rance's uncontrollable potty mouth, this episode contains uncensored mature language.  More than usual, anyway. Let's bring this horse doo doo to a close!  Our heroes recap this somewhat serviceable, but still pretty insufferable hypothetical sequel to A New Hope.  Rance recounts his tale of dental trauma and shows off the difference between his new and old choppers, while Bob just sort of lets him ramble, and hopes his fiancé isn't listening to hear him lament his growing quarantine hair and beard. The brothers discuss the shortcomings of this book, make a couple excuses, and comparisons to the existing canon, but honestly can't fit enough of their (General) grievances with the last 100 pages into a time efficient podcast.  So they go over by about 45 minutes. Finally, this trilogy of episodes ends with the guys creating their own third Star Wars movie, replacing Return of the Jedi in this dumb timeline with something that should please all the fans of the series everywhere.  Then they pat themselves on the back a bit too extensively for being so awesome. Oh.  They also get visited by their cats.  Check out the YouTube version of this episode to see kitty madness. *NOTE: Due to some medical issues, mostly because of Rance's dumb face, we had to push back our release rotation schedule.  Guess we'll try it again next week.  The hope is to get back to releasing on Mondays, so please stick with us.  We'll get there!  We hope you still enjoy it, and thanks for joining us!* Please consider rating and reviewing, as well as recommending to your friends, and sharing on social media.  The more following we get, the better content we can provide! But only for a little bit.  Forget about the Force awakening.  Let's talk about the New Hope that our country is changing.  Yes, the guys still talk about this steaming hunk of dog poop (no, not the one in the White House, rather the one they have to read for the podcast), but they also comment on the current movement in our country, and hope that change will continue and for the better. Our heroes spend a few minutes getting to the hard truths, but also some of the not so hard truths.  Rance offers an apology to his brother, and admits to a major lack of commitment.  Bob challenges Rance with an off the cuff trivia quiz from this episode's assigned reading.  They get off topic a lot, even delving into J.K. Rowling's latest statements relating to Trans rights. It's getting dodgy out there, so stay tuned, and do the work. *NOTE: Due to some technical issues, and Rance's forgetfulness, there are some sound quality issues with this episode.  We hope you still enjoy it, and thanks for joining us!* Please consider rating and reviewing, as well as recommending to your friends, and sharing on social media.  The more following we get, the better content we can provide!
