Earlier this year, conservatives were outraged by Congress closing a prayer with “Awomen,” rather than “Amen.” This is offensive, but Talarico’s prayer was just as bad—if not worse.

\n

The Texas House is not a body that is led by a strong moral ethic; this much we know is true, and it’s important that we recognize that. It changes the way you address the Legislature and what you expect from them.

Have a blessed week.

The battle over government-mandated power prices that have left ratepayers on the hook for billions of dollars has put Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick at odds with Gov. Greg Abbott. Abbott is also teaming up with House Speaker Dade Phelan to keep the Texas House from being allowed to take a position on this policy.

\n
\n
State Rep. Cole Hefner, a member who is very close to Dade Phelan, decided it was time for him to prioritize the GOP agenda. The Republican Party of Texas has 9 priorities, and most legislators have kept from supporting them. Hefner recently announced that he was authoring, or co-authoring, 8 agenda items. What was strange was that, instead of co-authoring 1 or all 3 of the currently filed constitutional carry proposals, Hefner copied and pasted State Rep. Kyle Biedermann’s bill into his own bill. Similarly, instead of co-authoring Bryan Slaton’s monument protection bill, he copied and pasted and filed the same bill with his name on it. Hefner also copied State Rep. Steve Toth’s legislation regarding banning sex-change surgeries on minor children.
\n
\n
It’s times like this that reveal a truth that we all know. For house leadership, personality trumps policy. Honestly, I don’t know if we will actually protect monuments this year, but more important to many politicians is who gets the credit.
\n
\n
Recently State Rep. Matt Krause tweeted out an antithetical message to that of Cole Hefner:
\n
\n
\n

\n
\n

5th Session in a row we’ve been working on that concept. Thanks for the acknowledgment @JasonVaughn! But I don’t care how we get it done – as long as it gets signed into law. It’s good policy! https://t.co/jwV1yNCkdc

\n
\n
\n
Ronald Reagan famously kept this quote on his desk:
\n
\n
There is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he does not mind who gets the credit.”
\n
\n
Hopefully, the Texas House gets past this personality contest and starts to focus on actually delivering conservative results. Texas needs it, and we’re done with the excuses we keep hearing every session.
\n
\n
I hope you enjoy this week’s episode.

Today we bring Shelby Williams, Rich Deotte, and Jill Glover together for an in-depth conversation about legislative priorities. The sad reality is that Governor Abbott and the various GOP caucuses are avoiding most of these issues as much as possible and without grassroots pressure, these priorities will die this session.

Governor Greg Abbott is opening Texas tomorrow. This is good news for Texans.

\n

The sad thing is that not only does Gov. Abbott believe he single-handedly is the one who gets to decide if Texas is open, he believes that he single-handedly gets to decide which businesses are open and which facial coverings must be worn by all Texans.

\n

Today we take a walk down memory lane. When the pandemic first hit, Abbott, claimed that a statewide mask mandate was not in alignment with the views that Texas had on freedom and liberty. Then as the political pressure mounted, he calculated that his legacy would be better off if he instituted a statewide mask mandate similar to that of New York and California.

\n

Abbott assumed that less emotional governors like Florida’s Ron DeSantis would be proved wrong and his unwillingness to have a statewide mask mandate would prove ill-informed and lead to more death. He was wrong. And it took him eight months of mandates to decide he was wrong.

\n

Now, State Rep. Dustin Burrows is working desperately against the Texas Senate and the Texas Republican Party to pass legislation that endorses Abbott’s dictatorial handling of the pandemic.

\n

The good news for Texans is that State Sen. Brian Birdwell, along with many Texas senators, is pushing legislation to end Abbott’s overreach. Right now, the only Republican senators who haven’t signed on to support Birdwell’s legislation are:

The more I read this bill the worse it got. Today I sat down with two conservative lawyers, Matt Rinaldi and Tony McDonald. They honestly do an excellent job pointing out the significant flaws in HB 3.

\n

This legislation gives the Governor, during a pandemic, dictatorial authority over Texas citizens and businesses. It also threatens businesses who don’t obey every one of Governor Abbott’s executive orders, with legal liability due to their disobedience. It’s an attempt to create more loyal subjects, not freer citizens.

\n

The worldview of this bill is one that runs antithetical to our founding fathers, the state constitution, and the Republican Party Priorities which clearly state executive power needs to be curtailed.

\n

Dustin Burrows is declaring open warfare with Allen West, any State Representative who has criticized Abbott, and any business who disobeyed Abbott’s shutdown orders. This bill is a direct contradiction to the position of Senator Charles Perry, who is also a constituent of Dustin Burrows.

\n

It’s truly remarkable just how much this bill is a pure endorsement of the big government dictatorial actions of Greg Abbott. Not only that, but Dade Phelan has prioritized the passage of this bill by giving it such a low bill number.

\n

Instead of handling these issues separately like the Texas Senate, House leadership has decided to use D.C. tactics of putting everything in one omnibus bill, which means there are some little nuggets of good things to cover up their destruction of the Texas constitution.

\n

Hopefully, this is not a trend that continues out of Dade Phelan. We shall see.

Here is what some of you might not know. Bob Hall has been talking about protecting our power grid ever since he got elected to the Senate 6 years ago. There is no person better informed on the threats to the grid. Senator Hall has also been asking his fellow legislators to protect the grid for his entire tenure.

None of the grid-related legislation that Senator Hall has pushed has become law and the question remains; will the legislature take a leadership role or reactive role in fixing the issue.

Wealthy government subsidized oligarchies have been exposed. Tony Tinderholt and Bob Hall started asking for more accountability and oversight over our grid long ago and have been mocked for doing so.

Power companies, their lobbyists and their PAC’s have worked tirelessly to keep politicians on their side. Now that millions of Texans are without power and lives are literally being lost, the winds have shifted. Today I take a few minutes to open your eyes to a few of the issues that have been going on for the last several years and just how hard it has been to hold this system accountable.

\n

Now a lot of politicians feel the need to do something about it, which is good, but we need to fight to make sure real reform takes place.

Texas is truly at a crossroads, and the direction we take will have a dramatic effect on the entire world. Over the last eight years, our politicians’ decision to largely stay on the sidelines of cultural battles was something they could get away with more easily than they’ll be able to in 2021.

\n

Today, my friends Michael Quinn Sullivan and Jon Francis join me as we discuss the current battlefield that Texas finds itself in and what decisions we have to make to ensure that our freedoms are still enjoyed for years to come.

\n

We discuss the difference between Govs. Greg Abbott and Ron DeSantis and how their actions will affect which state leads our nation against the attempted leftist takeover.

\n

Whether we want to admit it or not, the left is trying to destroy anyone in the center or right of center in this country. That fact cannot be disputed. Unfortunately, those leftists have a significant amount of influence within the Democrat Party, as well as all other major societal institutions.

\n

So, what do we do?

\n

Well, you will have to listen in on the conversation to find out.

\n

We do take some time to discuss what citizens can specifically consider doing as they decide how best to engage in the battle.

\n

I hope you enjoy the conversation.

We learned a ton during last week’s rules debate in the Texas House. This week we start by explaining for Texans what the rules are, and then proceed to lay out key takeaways from last week’s debate.

\n

\n

\n

\n

Some key things we learned this week include:

\n

1. Leadership is still the minority. This was brought to light by the fact that when Dade Phelan made the biggest attempt at a power grab in recent history through the rules his administration was resoundingly defeated. Dade has less control of the Texas House than his predecessors did.

\n

2. Democrats are still more influential than conservatives. This was brought to light by the fact that the vast majority of the GOP caucus voted to allow Democrats to chair (which gives a lawmaker total control over the policy in a committee) key committees which they could use to kill GOP priorities this session. Just last session Dennis Bonnen placed Democrats in a position to kill the heartbeat bill and constitutional carry legislation.

\n

3. Abortion is still an issues that matters to a majority of the GOP caucus. While 46 Republicans voted to make Abortion a priority this session, 36 Republicans teamed up with every Democrat to kill the rules change. This vote brought even more interesting realities to light when we saw former conservatives Cole Hefner, Dustin Burrows & Craig Goldman team up with Democrats while Republicans like Trent Ashby and other Republicans teamed up with Bryan Slaton to make pro-life legislation a priority.

\n

4. This session might be led by freshmen and less senior GOP members. We saw Tony Tinderholt, Kyle Biedermann, Bryan Slaton, Jeff Cason, Cody Vasut, Mayes Middleton and Steve Toth all take leadership roles in pushing positive change in the rules. This doesn’t mean that more senior Republicans won’t lead, but if they don’t the less senior members seem ready to take the reigns.

\n

5. The Texas Freedom Caucus is all over the place. We witnessed Matt Shaheen side with nearly every single Democrat to protect Governor Abbott’s unconstitutional executive orders. We witnessed Valoree Swanson consistently side with Democrats and liberal Republicans against conservatives amendments while Briscoe Cain was the lone Freedom Caucus member who voted to give Democrats the opportunity to chair top House Committees while Matt Schaefer and Mayes Middleton voted for and publicly supported the restriction as something conservatives needed. If a group like the Freedom Caucus has members siding with Democrats advancing a conservative agenda will most definitely be an uphill battle.

\n

We cover all of these observations and more in-depth on today’s episode. Hope you enjoy it.

\n

Lastly, while it’s important to hold public officials accountable it’s also incredibly important that we remember to pray for our enemies. It’s something I was reminded about this week at church.

God Bless,

\n

The 6 things we cover today are:

\n

– If the legislature believes there is such a thing as a man and a woman

\n

– If Republicans will govern in a red or purple manner

\n

– Whether to lead, follow or do nothing in the midst of a cultural decline

\n

– Whether or not the legislature believes that GOP delegates and activists matter

\n

– Whether the GOP will go back to the “good old days” of Bush, McCain, and Romney politics, or push a more citizen focused conservative agenda.

Shelby Williams is a Republican leader and local city councilman who recently supported Representative Shaheen for re-election. He also did his own personal research into Shaheen’s legislation and gives us a balanced view of how he thinks it will impact things legally.

\n

I think you will learn about this potentially problematic policy in a much more detailed way with the discussion we had. We layout various perspectives so you can decide for yourself whether this legislation is good or not.

I want you to listen to the end of the conversation. Shelby has a phenomenal testimony about entering into the political arena and it should motivate everyone to realize just how much of an impact one person can have if they just start getting involved.

Dan Patrick announced he is changing the rules of the Senate in order to remove Democrats’ ability to “veto” Republican agenda items.

This is a great indication for Republicans who are pushing to have a session dedicated to conservative policy.

\n

On the other hand, Dade Phelan has done anything but indicate his intentions of advancing a conservative agenda in 2021. The good news is we still have time and it will be interesting to see what the next few weeks indicate to Texans as we watch the actions of the incoming speaker.

Jim Murphy is your next Republican Caucus Chair.

\n

The election of Murphy sends a clear signal that corruption will be elevated this session. Dishonesty is not only expected but will even be promoted from within the ranks of the Texas House.

\n

How is this the message you ask? Well give me 15 minutes on today’s podcast and you will know.

\n

Poncho Nevarez had an incredibly honest quote in his 2,000 word essay  following his decision to not seek re-election.

\n

“As I made my way through my first session, I became aware that a lot of what makes a high-functioning legislator is a talent for coloring outside the lines. I had that in spades. Guys like me tend to float through a lot of things because people perceive a potential in us, and they make allowances. Bodies like the legislature reward that, especially during the session.” – Poncho Nezarez (Former Democrat State Representative)

\n

It’s honestly astounding that so many legislators lack any self-awareness of how problematic the culture of the pink dome is, and then after they leave can look back and realize that all the wrong behavior is rewarded.

\n

\n

\n

\n

So where does this leave us?

\n

Well if you are a Texan who wants to see Republican results this session the Texas GOP Caucus is sending you a message that what they respond to is power. This means their power needs to be confronted to advance your goals.

\n

I believe Texans will rise to the occasion but wish the caucus would send a better signal worthy of positive feedback.

These are discussions that must happen.

If Republicans take away the wrong lesson from the victories we had, then we will put Texas back into the competitive category. We can’t let that happen.

Matt Mackowiak is a longtime political consultant in Texas, and Brendan Steinhauser has worked in every political arena imaginable. Of course, we don’t agree on everything, which makes this conversation even better.

Honestly, his willingness to publicly push this has shocked the Texas Capitol. They have long controlled the position of GOP Chair and are now experiencing the problems of not being able to silence the Party, while they decide what their priorities are.

Donald Trump significantly outperformed the polls, and not in a way that any of us anticipated. I explain that today and talk about the path toward a broader GOP coalition that Trump revealed to Texas.

I have great news. Dustin Burrows has reversed his position on a controversial pro-life amendment that Jonathan Stickland passed in 2019. Today we bring you an interview with Jonathan Stickland, along with footage from the Texas House floor, to explain just how hard House Leadership worked to kill an amendment that they later decided was a good idea.

\n

Conservatives must learn a huge lesson from this. House leadership for at least a decade has had little to no vision, and have pursued unity with Democrats over substantive conservative policy wins for Republicans.

\n

Today you will hear a play by play account of how we came up with this pro-life amendment, and how hard House leadership, including Craig Goldman, Dustin Burrows, and Dennis Bonnen worked to thwart that pro-life victory.

\n

Why is this relevant now?

\n

Lubbock is now going to have a special election to consider outlawing abortion in their city.

\n

\n

\n

\n

This is a huge win and the result of an effort lead by pro-life leaders and activists, along with Senator Charles Perry, John Frullo, and Dustin Burrows.

\n

This is an election that will have huge implications and we are praying for its success. If you are a conservative in West Texas you should consider involving yourself in their efforts.

\n

Today, we are going to discuss just how much of a culture problem we have in the Texas Legislature regarding the issue of abortion. Until we recognize that we are sick, we won’t be able to fix the disease.

Are you ready to die?

\n

That’s the first question we ask on today’s podcast. Many of you have already seen the news of the passing of Ross Kecseg. In my conversations with Ross over the last several months, I’ve witnessed what the scriptures talk about when it reveals a “peace that surpasses all understanding” and I want to share some of what Ross showed me with each of you.

\n

When it comes to Texas politics we dive in deep on Steve Toth and Bob Hall’s latest actions in opposition to Governor Greg Abbott. Toth and Hall collectively articulate the frustration of conservatives over the inappropriate actions of the executive branch in Texas. I also wanted to take time to compare Toth and Hall’s latest critique’s with that of the last direct critique that the Freedom Caucus laid on the Governor. The Freedom Caucus took a very different approach, even implying that Abbott’s actions might be “right” and implying that every action of Abbott’s reflects “care” for Texans.

\n

Though about half of the Freedom Caucus has directly criticized the executive branch, the message of their letter, when compared to the message of Toth and Hall, show a true disparity that grassroots conservatives should be aware of.

I hope you enjoy today’s podcast.

Lastly, I talk about RBG’s death and what that means for the supreme court. More importantly, I discuss how the word “hypocrisy” is being overused in today’s climate.

Today we cover these issues and the sexual exploitation of children be promulgated by Netflix.

\n

David French’s attempted nuance of critical race theory runs completely counter to that of the response that Al Mohler gave on the issue in his June 14th episode. John Cornyn’s promotion of Bloomberg/Obama gun control policies run counter to the entire conservative worldview of the 2nd amendment.

#FakeNews. Ask Freedom Caucus Chair @mayes_middleton. The bill would’ve died if his hard work to find a passable bill w/ other on committee hadn’t been substituted. He picked the strongest member not the weakest! Proud to be endorsed by Mayes & @BriscoeCain#txlegehttps://t.co/v05yVYvUBA

\n

— Drew Springer (@DrewSpringer) August 28, 2020

@DrewSpringer opposes taxpayer funded lobbying the same way JD Sheffield opposes abortion. https://t.co/e5w3cQkmjB

\n

— Luke Macias (@lukemaciastx) August 28, 2020

\n

\n

Representative Jeff Leach joined the chorus (I’m hopeful that Jeff just didn’t know the facts before talking).

\n
\n

Don’t pay attention to this guy, Drew. He lost his way and stopped caring about facts and the truth a long time ago.

\n

— Jeff Leach (@leachfortexas) August 28, 2020

\n

\n

Springer is trying to throw Mayes Middleton and Briscoe Cain under the bus in defense of his record but so far they aren’t taking the bait.

\n

Today is a more educational episode. The facts around Drew Springer’s record, and his willingness to straight up lie about them, is incredibly revealing. I hope this revelation of facts to his colleagues may cause some of them to second guess whether they want Drew to be promoted to a more powerful position.

\n

\n

We take 30 minutes to not only lay out the facts ourselves but we bring you recorded footage from the Texas House floor where you hear Mayes Middleton, Kyle Biedermann and Dade Phelan reveal themselves just how out of touch Drew Springer is with rural Texas.

\n

This episode gets into the weeds but I think it’s a trip worth taking for conservative Texans.

It would be best for Texans to remove the word “disaster” from all sections of state law. Yes, that might be an overreaction to the perversions of state law that are currently happening, but trust me, you’d be better off if the word was nowhere to be found in state law.

\n

\n

Governor Abbott is using this pesky little exception made in the “Texas Disaster Act of 1975” and Democrats are using the exception for disasters that was inserted into the property tax reform bill. Both are using this word to punish citizens and grow the government.

\n

\n

There is also a very sad reality of how “disaster” is being abused. Our Republican Governor is perverting the law to increase his power, but Democrats, while using the law to hurt taxpayers, are seemingly acting within the authority that the law actually gives them. I don’t believe Paul Bettencourt and Dustin Burrows intended for this disaster exception to be able to be used for Coronavirus, but they couldn’t anticipate how much Abbott would harm taxpayers in the pursuit of unilateral power.

\n

\n

Today we discuss the danger of the word “disaster”, the abuses happening in both parties, and the incredible importance of passing the legislation that Bryan Slaton is filing next session.

I would like to publicly ask Republicans to just stick to your principles for the next couple of months so that we can really focus on the absurdity of the Democrat candidates running across our state.

\n

Last week we strangely saw Paul Bettencourt, Dustin Burrows, and TPPF’s Kevin Roberts applaud a city for raising property taxes while their citizens are dealing with record unemployment. It was a sobering reminder of the danger of allowing the left to define the playing field of policy. Kevin and Paul are men I have considerable respect for, and I was genuinely surprised to see this. We have to do better.

\n

Bob Hall continues to lead the charge on all things COVID in Texas, and this week he began to highlight the fact that the Texas Medical Board is punishing doctors who are successfully treating patients with Hydroxychloroquine. Dr. Hall is fighting for these doctors, even if Texas bureaucrats refuse to.

\n

Lastly, we have a perverted leftist running as the Democrat nominee for State Board of Education, and this week we found out some insane views she has regarding “young boys” being portrayed in a sexual nature on television.

\n

\n

\n

You can’t make this stuff up.

\n

Take some time to get caught up on all things Texas on this week’s podcast.

If you want to hear the type of resilience that it requires to run a third time after two losses, then take some time to listen to this conversation.

\n

Bryan’s victory was a major victory for grassroots conservatives in Texas. He’s going to be a great State Representative.

It’s a unique set of names but each of these men have made remarkable life decisions that greatly affect Texans and their rights so today we cover the aftermath of the RPT chairman’s race, a governor who continues to reveal his worldview is ever moving and a supreme court justice who’s maybe realizing the world that he’s creating has some concerning consequences.

I don’t think that’s a good idea for Cornyn as he goes into a November election as one of the least popular statewide Republicans in Texas.

I don’t know why he thinks taunting faith-based conservatives is in his best interest, and that is what I talk about on today’s podcast.
