Many of you wanted to see what a senior technical interview looked like for software engineers. You asked, and thanks to Sophie and Dan, you shall have. Here's what an algorithm/coding portion of a senior software engineer interview can look like. I love how Sophie progressed the problem until Dan was truly challenged. How you handle that moment in the interview speaks volumes about your character and how you'll most likely handle future challenges. I brought on the CEO of Formation (an ex-Facebook software engineer) who helps junior software engineers progress and prepare for mid to senior level interviews. She had a ton of expertise and experience to share with the industry. We talked about the different types of software engineering teams, at different sized companies, and how to prepare for them. If you find yourself nervous in interviews and don't really know what employers are looking for, this section of the podcast should be really insightful for you. She also shared what the progression to becoming a senior software engineer looks like at these different types of companies. We not only talk about how to prepare in the short-term, but also paths you can take for long-term career development as a software engineer. We went into depth answering 3 simple questions for aspiring developers. How do you decide if becoming a developer is right for you?How do you decide if a coding bootcamp is right for you? What are aspiring developers doing to sabotage their chances of finding a job?I've had several staff from coding bootcamps reach out to try and get on my show. The reason you don't see me invite on too many is because most of them just want it to basically be a marketing pitch for their coding bootcamp. The reason I brought Dan on was because he didn't give off those vibes. You'll see that he genuinely just wants to help aspiring developers. I can't emphasize enough how valuable software engineers are. When I polled my community, 91% of you said that you would love to build a side project that made you additional income or even replaced your full-time job. Sometimes developers can develop the habit of jumping into the code too quickly (me included). I brought on leaders in the UX and Product space to share how they would go about validating an idea and building out an MVP with features that actually provide value to users. There's SO much conflicting advice out there around how to best and accurately represent your skills and projects as a junior developer. I brought on an old boss of mine who lost count of the number of resumes he's reviewed and software engineers that he's hired. Needless to say, he's been in the game for a while. I can attest that Scott has always looked out for software engineers that have crossed his path, but he's also very honest. Without knowing his views around the topic before I invited him on, because of his honesty, I thought he'd be a great hiring manager to answer questions about how to best represent yourself as an aspiring software engineer. I invited 4 graduates on from a Canadian based coding bootcamp to share their experiences with the program. One thing that I have to say is that programs and even students in Canada seem to portray themselves in a very honest and straightforward way. I invited on some previous podcast guests, and we just talked about some of our favorite libraries that we wanted to share, as well as the personal projects we've recently worked on. See if you can count the number of libraries that I mixed up. At the end, everyone shared a piece of feedback for aspiring developers that I think will give tons of value to you if you are trying to become a developer. This episode was a bit of an experiment, and ultimately I think it could be fun to do more casual style podcast episodes where we just talk about random topics in the developer world. I don't think I've quite gotten the format down for this type of episode. I invited on TJ Kinion, the Program Manager / Career Services Director of LearningFuze to talk about what kinds of things to look for in a coding bootcamp to make sure you have all of the support you need to be successful. In a previous video, I invited on a few coding bootcamp graduates to talk about their experiences at LearningFuze. We talked about the pros and cons of the coding bootcamp. One pro that caught my attention was how the guests seemed to really feel supported. Especially during the pandemic, this has been a challenge for many coding bootcamps. So, I decided to dive into how they accomplished that. Well, it started off as that, and then it expanded into coding bootcamp research tips; questions to ask, thoughts and advice with ISA's and job guarantees; and a lot more. Want to know what a legitimate frontend developer interview is really like? I invited on a developer that had originally interviewed me for my second software engineering position. He interviewed a brave soul from our community that's currently trying to get his first position as a developer. This isn't your typical coding bootcamp. In fact, I invited on Derek, the CEO of Perpetual Education, just to clarify what he was offering. To be honest, when he initially reached out to me, I was intrigued by the way he advertises the coding bootcamp. In this web development podcast episode, I made the statement that within 5 years, under 50% of junior software engineers will have a Computer Science degree. Software engineering is a field that updates too quickly for college curriculums to keep up with at a fast pace, which is often why they're outdated. They put students in a massive amount of debt without any guarantee of a job. Alternative paths such as coding bootcamps and self-paced online programs are on the rise, and rightfully so. With the abundant access of education on the internet, it's no longer worth the return on your investment to invest in a bloated degree. I invited 3 Springboard graduates on to talk about their experience at the coding bootcamp. If I'm not mistaken, this is one of the longest coding bootcamps I've reviewed so far. It sounds like they don't have instructors. It's certainly an interesting way to structure a coding bootcamp to say the least. I invited current and ex-Google software engineers on to talk about their experiences of what it's like to be a developer at Google. We dug into rumors, perks, day to day, and the interview process. We even took some time out to compare it with software engineer positions at smaller companies. They actually got me to change my mind about whether or not I could see myself working at Google!Guests:Jeremy Wall - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeremywallJoon Park - https://www.linkedin.com/in/joonpark13---------------------------------------------------❤️ If you find my content helpful, please consider supporting me on Patreon and get access to additional perks.
