Collier Democratic Roundup

Collier County Democratic Party

We've all been there before. Walking down the aisle at the local grocery store and you overhear a conversation about politics and you cringe. You try your best to ignore what is being said, but the words just keep coming in through your ears no matter how much you try to block them out.

It's at that moment that you feel that you are alone in a sea of Republicanism. Alone in a maddening, MAGA-hat wearing throng where everyone drinks the Fox News kool-aid.

All Episodes

Today we discuss Biden's first 100 days in office and give him a grade (spoiler alert, he did pretty well), we talk about the census and what redistricting means for Democrats, and we look at the efforts of local Anti-abortion advocates and their push to make Naples a sanctuary city for the unborn. Plus we have our moments of positivity. But before we get into all of that here is some Democratic Party news. First, it is with great sadness that we announce the resignation of our State Committee woman Sara McFadden. Sara has been a huge asset to the local party over the last 5 years. She has run twice for office and made huge strides in a very difficult district, growing the party with all of her efforts both as a candidate and as our State Committeewoman. She will remain on as a Precinct committee person, but she is taking a much deserved break. A huge thank you to Sara for all of her efforts. With Sara's resignation, we have to replace her position and we are excited to announce that Jane Schletweig has agreed to become our new State Committeewoman. Jane is a precinct committeewoman out of Marco, she is Vice-President of the Democratic Women's Club of Marco, and she is the Region 7 Chair for the Democratic Women's Club of Florida. Jane has worked closely with the leadership of the Collier Democratic Party over the last 4 years and we are excited for her to join our leadership team. The Democratic County Chairs Association met for the first time this past month and we had State Party Chair Manny Diaz and Executive Director Marcus Dixon on to update us on all the Florida Democratic Party efforts. They are doing a great job of getting the party back moving in the right direction. They have proposed a annual budget of 12 million dollars, focusing heavily on voter registration and communication. They have budget money to combat what will prove to be contentious redistricting process. They have had to deal with a lot of unforseen issues that have arisen after their election, but they have righted the ship and are pushing forward. Here are the upcoming meetings to put on your schedule. Thursday May 6th @ 6:30 is the Monthly DEC meeting. This is the business meeting of the party, it is open to the public. Tuesday May 11th @7:00 is the monthly meeting of the Democratic Womens Club of Marco. I will speaking at this meeting along with our outgoing State Committeewoman Sara McFadden. We will be discussing the legislative session and the voting trends as seen around Collier County. Monday May 17th @ 6:30 is the monthly meeting of the Collier Democratic Club. Please remember to volunteer and donate. We are an all volunteer organization and we rely on your generosity to maintain the website, produce this podcast, and promote the agenda of the Democratic party through out Collier and Southwest Florida, so please donate a little time or money to our efforts. It is greatly appreciated.   Support this podcast

This week's show we look at the unpopular legislation being pushed by the Florida State Republicans including the protest bill, the THC bill, the Voting Restrictions bill, preemption bill, and more. We talk about how bad press is evidently good press for Florida Republicans as Matt Gaetz sticks it out and Governor DeSantis is now the front runner for the 2024 nomination. And finally we talk about Collier Counties push to open up the environmentally sensitive eastern side of the county to developers against the public and environmental groups. What could go wrong? Plus the local news from the party. Support this podcast

On this week’s podcast we have an interview with Captain Chris Wittman of Captains for Clean Water done about two months ago that we never got to put out due to all the news happening every week. We felt if that this is the last opportunity to get this done before the election as the next 6 weeks will be focused entirely on the election. Here’s a quick update on things going on in the Party. Vote-By-Mail ballots will be in people’s mailboxes any day and you can finally put pen to paper and vote for Joe Biden for President and remove the danger to America. Also look out for the Collier County Democratic Party Voter’s guide which was mailed to all 55,000 Democrats and left-leaning NPA’s. That should be in your mailboxes now as well. If you have not received those, please check out our website where you can find out all of the candidates and our recommendations on the amendments. We are in full GOTV mode for the next 39 days of this election. We are calling voters who have requested Vote-By-Mail ballots and telling them to send them in immediately. We are dropping literature at doors to encourage people to vote. We are sending post cards, we’ve got radio ads running, we’re texting, waving signs…we have something for you to do and you need to do it. Please sign up by going to our website http://www.collierdems.org/ (www.collierdems.org) and click on volunteer. Lastly, we want to take a moment to remember RBG, Ruth Bader Ginsberg. We will talk about this more on the next episode of the podcast, but we just want to say that she dedicated her life to the principle of equal rights for all Americans under the law regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, etc. She fought for these principles and we will continue the fight. Her last words were that her most fervent wish was for her replacement to be made after a new president is installed. She deserved better than this. RIP RBG. Support this podcast

On this week’s podcast we have the first part of our interview with Dr. Savarese from FGCU Water School where he is a professor of coastal resilience and climate adaptation. In part one of our interview we look at how communities plan for the effects of climate change and what kind of effects are expected here in Collier County.  We, as always have our panel discussion where we dive into the Covid resurgence here in Florida. In full disclosure we intended to dive into other topics, such as the environment, etc., but the explosion of cases and growing numbers filling up hospitals around the state and particularly here in South West Florida compelled a longer dive into the numbers. But before we get to that, let’s get some party Info out of the way. We have Biden Signs! Are you sick of seeing Trump Signs and Trump Flags in your neighborhood? Are you ready to let the maskless, MAGA Hat Hat Wearing crowd know you are in support of a man who believes in science and listening to experts during a pandemic? On this week’s podcast we have both Democratic Candidates for Florida House District 105, Candidate Maureen Porras and Candidate Javier Estevez. This District is a very important district this election cycle as there are more registered Democrats than Republicans. The incumbent Ana Maria Rodriguez is stepping down and running for a Florida State Senate seat. It’s an open seat and we need to flip it. And we have two awesome candidates who will do just that. As always, we have our panel discussion with Amber and Linda. This episode we look at the local protests over Oakes Farms and the controversial comments made by the owner of Oakes Farms, Alfie Oakes. We dig into the explosion of coronavirus cases here in Florida and the decisions by the Governor to continue re-opening without precautions. Finally we talk about voting rights and the effects, both negative and positive, that Republican efforts to restrict voting across the country is likely to have come November. But, first here is some local party info. We are very excited to announce that all of our local candidates qualified and will be on the ballot this November. Obviously, we have two races with primaries so those will be on the ballot this august with the winner moving on to the general election. We have candidates in all of the Florida legislature seats running this election cycle and Democrats across the state are competing in every single legislative seat except one. We are contesting every seat to make sure that voters hear progressive values, as well as all of the Democratic candidates who are contesting Republican incumbents will hold those incumbents accountable for their record. Voters must hear about the decisions made by Republican incumbents and the best way to highlight decisions that do not help constituents, is by directly confronting them in an election. So congratulations to all of our candidates here in Collier County and all of the Democratic candidates across the state. In an effort to support our candidates, we will be putting on candidate spotlights for our candidates who do not have primary challenges and a candidate forum for FL House 105, which has a primary. These will begin on June 30th with County Commission Candidate for District 5 David Turrubiartiez Jr. We will do one a week for the next 5 weeks, so Democratic voters get to know their candidates. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/voter-turnout-soared-georgia-despite-massive-primary-day-problems-n1230806 (https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/voter-turnout-soared-georgia-despite-massive-primary-day-problems-n1230806) https://www.miamiherald.com/news/coronavirus/article243349186.html (https://www.miamiherald.com/news/coronavirus/article243349186.html) https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html (https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html) https://www.npr.org/2020/05/26/860458708/pandemic-puts-a-crimp-on-voter-registration-potentially-altering-electorate (https://www.npr.org/2020/05/26/860458708/pandemic-puts-a-crimp-on-voter-registration-potentially-altering-electorate) https://www.news-press.com/story/news/education/2020/06/11/alfie-oakes-lee-schools-severs-ties-oakes-farms-following-ceo-alfie-oakes-social-media-post-black-li/5337091002/ (https://www.news-press.com/story/news/education/2020/06/11/alfie-oakes-lee-schools-severs-ties-oakes-farms-following-ceo-alfie-oakes-social-media-post-black-li/5337091002/) https://www.winknews.com/2020/06/16/another-protest-held-in-response-to-oakes-farms-owners-social-media-post/ (https://www.winknews.com/2020/06/16/another-protest-held-in-response-to-oakes-farms-owners-social-media-post/) Support this podcast
