Are Inmate Firefighters Trafficked by the State?

By Seth Daire

Over 1,700 inmates firefighters joined professional firefighters to stop the recent wildfires in Northern California. They are part of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) Conservation Camp program, and make up a third of all firefighters in California, saving the state over $80 million, while being paid $2/day and between $1-2/hour. Seth Daire and JJ Janflone discuss what's good, and exploitative, about this program.
