Matthew Slayton is an academic researcher studying the evolution of music cognition.Last year at the Biosemiotics conference at UC Berkeley, he presented a paper about the evolution of music cognition, comparing several different theoretical models about evolutionary change with respect to how the brain uses and interprets language, music (and the other arts), and ritual.In today’s episode we dig into his research, and why exactly music has any meaning for humans at all.
