Johnnie Gilmore is a virtuoso bass player and songwriter. Though he has loved and played music nearly all his life — starting with piano lessons in elementary school — it became his main passion when he first picked up the electric bass at fifteen.
Since then, Johnnie has honed his craft as a bassist for a wide variety of bands covering everything from soft folk to progressive jam-band, and logged thousands of hours as a street performer in his hometown of Boston while finishing his BA in music at Wesleyan University. After graduating from Wesleyan, where he won the Gwen Livingston Pekora prize for excellence in music composition as a senior, Johnnie moved to Los Angeles, releasing his debut solo album, Salt of the Earth, in November 2018 on RMI Records.
As a solo player and songwriter, Johnnie tells interesting stories with a focus on melody in his arrangements, evoking instrumentalists like Victor Wooten, Jaco Pastorius, Tommy Emmanuel, Chet Atkins, and Jon Gomm. (Even his most technically demanding songs can still be sung in the shower!) His music is also inspired by The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Phish, Steely Dan, and James Taylor.
