Jess and Darcy met during their time studying music at the University of Wollongong. Collaborating on assignments, the pair found common ground in their writing style and performance. Starting as a rag-tag folk cover band, the duo quickly started writing and experimenting within the confides of their voices, a guitar and a glock.
The name, The Bearded Cat, derives from an uninspired source. A friend jokingly suggested The Bearded Cat because of Jess loving cats, and frequently repping them as part of her attire, and Darcy’s consistent facial hair. Jess and Darcy enjoyed how the name sounded like a tavern or an old pub and it stuck.
