Brash, witty, melodic and inventive: London art-punk quartet White Ape defied categorisation, drawing acclaim from Steve Lamacq, Tom Robinson, John Robb and The Maccabees' Orlando Weeks and releasing several EPs for Sotones and Since Records Began Records. “Too smart...their heads spin with ideas. Truly fab and ready for mass attention” - John Robb, Louder Than War White Ape split in 2018 when lead guitarist Jim Turner moved to Melbourne, Australia. Singer Tommy Mack now performs as electro-balladeer The Iron Duke. In 2019 Bassist Mike Davies formed the Margate post-punk band Crabs. "Genius Lyrics and great vocal delivery. Thank God there are still bands telling it like it is" - Tom Robinson BBC6music White Ape formed in South London in 2011. Singer Tommy Mack met Mike Davies by chance on a beach in Tsing Tao, China. After the two drunkenly swam a mile out to sea (and thankfully, back) they formed the band. Steve Lamacq played their demo on his BBC6music show while still unsigned.
