Meeting as colleagues in a South London recording studio, they soon formed a creative partnership exploring their shared love of alternative rock and pop music.
Shortly after formation they released the self produced 'Papaya' EP in May of 2019. A brooding, synth heavy soundscape was the backdrop for timeless, haunting vocal melodies and evocative lyrics exploring the theme of relationships.
The pair's professional background in audio engineering also brought a tendency to tell the story of the songs through sound design Easter eggs in each track.
Sugoi ne draw influence from a variety of artists and genres including 80s pop (Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, The Pretenders), 90s UK rock (The Beautiful South, Radiohead), 2000s alternative rock (Paramore, Tool) and more modern Indie / Psych (Everything Everything, Tame Impala, The Mars Volta)
They also take inspiration from film soundtracks (Blade Runner, You Were Never Really Here). This combined with their background working in sound design, has led to a production focused sound and writing style.
At its heart is a focus on artistry, creativity and story telling. A freedom to express ideas through a variety of sounds and styles. No idea is off the table and this has led to a sound that's not afraid to experiment with time signatures and discord.
