It can take an artist years to make a breakthrough, that is when they even manage to break through at all.
It's easy to forget that for most people these breakthroughs happen in an instant –that moment when you hear a song you haven't heard before that makes you turn your head. To hear Jesper Munk's Favourite Stranger is to have your head turned repeatedly over the course of 10 vital, transcendent songs.
Favourite Stranger was recorded in Berlin, but Munk's musical journey had already taken him from busking on the streets of Munich to Los Angeles, New York and back to his hometown in rural Bavaria, working with producers Mocky (Feist, Jamie Lidell), Jon Spencer (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Heavy Trash, Pussy Galore) and Sepalot (Blumentopf) along the way. In that time he recorded and released two albums: his 2013 debut For in My Way it Lies and 2015's CLAIM, both of them speaking for themselves as expositions of his talents as a singer and songwriter of freewheeling blues rock and morning after ballads.
Where his previous recorded efforts sought to pay homage to the blues masters that inspired him to pick up a guitar in the first place, Favourite Stranger represents the outcome of his mission to rip it up and start again – and in so doing offers an intimate portrait of the artist as a young man, by turns more honest, vulnerable and exposed, and at the same time more musically outward-looking and authentic than anything else he has released.
