When Hannah Karydas was 13 years old, she started performing around her hometown of Cairns, a tropical city in northern Australia.
She had been making her own music since age 11, and eventually convinced some cafes to give her a gig. After shows, listeners would tell her how much her voice would suit covers of Joni Mitchell songs, so she got her dad to teach her Big Yellow Taxi. “I hadn’t even heard her version,” says Hannah. Eventually, she heard the real thing, and went through Joni’s catalogue, obsessing over Blue, then Ladies Of The Canyon. It was 1976’s Hejira that really spoke to the ambitious teenager. She had no idea how prophetic its tales of road trips and self-discovery would prove.
In 2015, Hannah signed with Australian label Dew Process, and released her debut EP under the name Eves The Behavior which was described as ‘disillusioned pop’. The EP documented a young woman finding her place in the world, who looked toward female heroines such as Joan of Arc and Joan Didion for influence and incentive.
Since then, from her new base of London, we see Karydas releasing new music under the name Eves Karydas (her middle name). Through new relationships, and with new, enlightening experiences to draw from, Karydas uses her music to explore female strength, sexuality and empowerment via deep, melodic hooks and brilliant sonic atmosphere she hopes will help to challenge the pop sphere. Eves Karydas' forthcoming debut album is to be scheduled for release later this year.
