The Phantom Cowboys are a neo-rockabilly four piece with a distinctive 'dark' signature sound.
Formed in Norwich, UK in 1994 they immediately stood out for their smart attire and highly original sound blending elements of rockabilly, goth rock and speakeasy swing. Despite defying easy categorisation, The Phantom Cowboys are cited as a key influence on the emergence of the 'gothabilly' scene in the US in the 1990s. Their sound has been compared to artists as diverse as The Cramps , Stray Cats, The Damned, Nick Cave and Echo & The Bunnymen.
Their 1998 debut album, “Down and Out at The Club Cruella” was released on their own Diogenes Records and has become a minor cult classic amongst fans of the weird and retro worldwide. Despite splitting up in 1999, the band had tracks featured on Anagram Record’s 2007 'Deathrow' retrospective of 1990s psychobilly bands and Skully Records influential ‘Gothabilly’ compilation in the US.
The Phantom Cowboys reunited in Summer 2015, playing a reunion gig in their hometown of Norwich. Further dates followed, and in late 2016 the band released an EP of new, original material entitled 'Dead Men's Clothes'. Widely praised as a comeback, one review hailed it 'a masterpiece of morbid entertainment', another simply that the band were; "Dark, clever, melodious and urbane as f*ck."
