Cloud Tapes was formed in Queens, New York in 2015 on the basis of a cover of Elliott Smith's "Rose Parade," resulting in guitarist/Vocalist John Samaras joining forces with The Silverwings bassist Sal Pisciotta.
Following a release show of Samaras' first solo LP effort, Is This Your Sign?, released via Bandcamp in August of 2014, the band began work on what would become the 90s-influenced Familiar Feeling, combining Smith's introspective style with the loud-soft dynamics of 90s alternative. The album was followed by 2017's If There Were a Reason, which found the band experimenting with greater extremes further influenced by alternative rock and folk-rock.
