4 and the beginning of Symphony no. 5 are genuine emotional experiences, as is the lovely Concerto for Violin & Orchestra in a (1904), but despite having tremendous popularity in his day, much of Glazunov's music now sounds formulistic. He is perhaps best seen as a late Russian romantic in the tradition of Glinka
and early Tchaikovsky
