Eclectic UK alternative outfit Pusherman was formed in 1994 and began establishing their reputation by playing underground all-night parties in London, England.
Andy Frank (vocals), Meredith ‘Yank’ Reid (b. 1965, Wichita, Kansas, USA, d. 28 April 2000, London, England; vocals, harmonica), Bo Ellery (bass), Martin Hoyland (guitar), Tony Antoniou (guitar) and Harry Harrison (drums) were happy enough to continue in this vein until they were spotted by producer Owen Morris, who invited them into the studio to record a demo tape. These sessions soon led to a contract with his own Ignition Records, and a succession of national dates including Melody Maker’s Maker Shaker tour. After support slots in Paris and New York to the Manic Street Preachers, they released their first single, ‘Whole’, which was voted single of the week by the New Musical Express. However, it was issued as a promotional disc only and no material was made officially available until the single, ‘Chase It’, and the band’s debut album, Floored, followed in September 1996. Promoted by touring engagements alongside the Levellers, Floored generally earned an excellent response from critics, though some were suspicious of their drug-orientated lyrics and name.
