California's Local Natives had a buzzy moment in 2009 when their debut album, Gorilla Manor, grabbed fans with its vibrant mix of kinetic tribal rhythms and soaring falsetto harmonies.
The album, which emerged in the wake of similar productions by Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear, and Yeasayer, drew praise for its enthusiastic balance of post-punk urgency and folk-tinged lyricism. In 2013, the group expanded upon that sound, exploring a darker, more ambient aesthetic on their follow-up, Hummingbird (produced by Aaron Dessner of The National).
A third album, Sunlit Youth, arrived in the summer of 2016 via Infectious and Loma Vista Recordings. It found the group returning to a more upbeat style, punctuated by the addition of synths. Two singles, " I Saw You Close Your Eyes" & "The Only Heirs" were released in early 2017 along with a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk." They returned in early 2019 with Violet Street, which was produced by longtime studio collaborator Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, Lucius, the War on Drugs). Included on the album were the singles "When Am I Gonna Lose You" and "Cafe Amarillo" while the standalone single "Nova" arrived later that year.
Local Natives are Kelcey Ayer, Nik Ewing, Matthew Frazier, Ryan Hahn, and Taylor Rice.
