BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award nominee Amelia Coburn has made her name, so far, with her exquisite stripped back cover versions of Indie, New Wave and classic pop songs of the 1970s and '80s (her dad's record collection basically).
Audiences fall silent at the sound of her truly unique voice. From, arguably, the best cover of Bowie's "Life on Mars?" to more obscure tracks such as "My Favourite Dress" by The Wedding Present and another bona fide classic interpretation in her version of The Specials' "Ghost Town" she digs the crates for the songs less travelled earning her fans across the world and across many musical tastes.
Beyond these first steps at presenting her musical vision, she has also begun to write beguiling original material in a purely folk style which wrap her unique world view up in metaphors of The Sea. A student of languages at university, Amelia is soaking up myriad cultures and influences which are already starting to bloom in her original work which, whilst undeniably English (her delicious northern accent twangs across the vowels) the songs also echo a distant folk-memory of eastern European grisly tales. Song of The Sea Rover, the first song she ever wrote is a grimly comic story of an avaricious pirate who meets his end in a bloody fashion. More original material will follow and a mini-album available at gigs showcases a considerately expanded sound and teases at the major talent that lurks beneath waiting to blossom.
