Originally from the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland, Danny O’Flaherty was reared in a culture steeped in Celtic history.
His younger years were spent sitting around the turf fire in his parent’s thatched roof cottage on the rugged shores of Inis Mor as his elders performed music and told stories. His musical roots go back many generations. His mother was a renowned accordion player and his father a champion fiddle player. There were always songs and stories in the O’Flaherty household. At age seven, Danny learned to play his first instrument, the harmonica. This was quickly followed by the accordion and guitar. At the age of fourteen, he formed his first band, The Golden Strand Ceile Band, after getting fired from another band in the village because he couldn’t play the drums. Danny and his band would hold ceiles in his dad’s hayshed, and soon they were playing at the local hall. He left Ireland for Chicago in 1968 and has lived in the United States ever since.
Believing that the key to keeping the Celtic culture alive is in education through entertainment, he has been dedicated throughout his entire life in promoting and preserving traditional Irish culture through his music, World Cup Regattas, tours to Ireland and Scotland and Celtic cruises to name a few. As a singer, songwriter and storyteller, O’Flaherty combines the sensitivity of the world around him and delivers it with a passion, sharing his Celtic heritage and music with the world.
