The Helsinki/Berlin-based pop duo Karina are regarded as one of the most intriguing and well received indie acts in Finland at the moment.
Their music is a combination of soft yet grandiloquent soundscapes that surround their stripped-down, unadorned lyrics. Nominated for the 2019 Hyundai Nordic Music Prize, their self-produced debut album ’Karina’ was released in March 2018 to widespread critical acclaim from the Finnish media. Songs such as ’Bambi' and ’Täällä sinua juhlitaan’ were praised as some of the greatest pop songs of the year.
In 2019 Karina have played more shows than ever before — in the sold out Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, on a long spring tour across Finland, warming up for the American band Beirut in Luxembourg and, for the very first time, performing in Estonia, Norway and the UK. They recently released the debut album’s final music video for 'Täällä sinua juhlitaan', directed by the Lisbon/Berlin-based film director Catarina Neves Ricci. The band are currently finishing their sophomore album, due out in spring 2020. First single 'En oo tän enempää' is out now.
"Karinan nimetön albumi on hienoimpia kotimaisia esikoislevyjä vuosikausiin (...) pieni ja intiimi folksoundi on sukua Sufjan Stevensille tai Iron & Winelle, kun taas suurellisimmillaan Karina tuo mieleen 1990-luvun alun shoegazing-indieyhtyeet, kuten Cocteau Twinsin tai Slowdiven." — ★★★★★ / Ilkka Mattila, Helsingin Sanomat
