Tommy Spender, a multi-instrumentalist and producer from Melbourne, has been busy a long time. Initially studying photography, he spent a summer raising money for a new 35mm camera busking on an alto saxophone.
It was winter when he was offered his first record deal and the camera was traded in for a Yamaha SU700 Sampler and a shitty laptop full of cracked software. His first band Offcutts was a playful experiment in the art of sampling, home recording and national radio success. 5 years of festivals, national and international touring and a variety of releases varying wildly in style left him always seeking deeper collaboration. A side project with best friends called The Sneaker Trio soon led to him joining Custom Kings and a number of summers where spent touring the east coast in joyful abandon. All the way Spender continued working in a variety of music mediums, from composing theater score, film soundtrack, and co-writing/producing in the studio with a multitude of diverse artists in Australia and abroad: M-Phazes, Bertie BlackmanLior, Kimbra, Gotye, Gossling, Clare Bowditch, Mama Kin, Clairy Browne, and Dani Siciliano. Currently having just written his first feature film score and continuing to produce a variety of artists, he is focused on releasing a collection of new material under his solo moniker Spender and his current collaborative project Mama Kin Spender.
