DJ S.M.L.'s claim to fame came as one of the first stateside DJs to spin 2-step and other related styles of U.K.
garage. Born Shunji Moriwaki, S.M.L. had a successful production career off the ground in the late '90s, with three of his productions charting on the Top 20 of Billboard's dance chart. In 1999, he began spinning 2-step, which was then becoming a major phenomenon in the U.K. By late 2000 he had started his own weekly 2-step party in New York, Hatch. There he provided New York with a weekly dose of 2-step in its various evolving forms, incorporating a little bit of R&B, dancehall, and house into the mix. He released his first major mix album, 2Step+Future Soul, on Topaz, introducing himself to a national audience. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi
