Harrowman weaves a style of contemporary folk that appeals to heritage troubadour fans as well as those following the exciting and burgeoning alternative folk scene.
The singer-songwriter from Surrey, UK blends intricate guitar picking with soaring vocals and a canny ability for melodic songwriting that is as soulful as it is poignant. There are shades of Nick Drake, John Martyn and James Taylor in the guitar playing and use of strings but the diverse song arrangements and socially focused, cutting lyrics ensure the material occupies a different sonic space altogether.
Self-released debut album, ‘Rite of Way’, recorded and mixed at Wildwood Studios in rural Surrey, portrays a songwriting talent in full flow, delivering concise storytelling and lyricism at its most urgent and compelling. Combining evocative ballads with sharp social commentaries and charming travelogues, the album displays a depth of song-craft and variety of subject matter that is both alluring and thought provoking whilst the song arrangements themselves range from delicate acoustic to lush, layered ensemble pieces incorporating cello, violin and female vocal harmonies.
From themes of urban decay, green space loss and political disaffection to coastal escapism and digital detox, ‘Rite of Way’ speaks to the heart as much as it provides a serious call to arms to re-establish values of community, family and self-identity within an increasingly fast-paced, frenetic world.
