Crafting her unique take on indie pop from her bedroom in Brisbane, Austen built up her catalogue of stand-alone singles and features before dropping her first EP independently late last year.
“Passenger Seat” - named after a road trip in the desert with an ex during which it was conceived - introduced her as a rising alt-pop voice. She cut her teeth on stage supporting the likes of The Kite String Tangle, Col3trane, Nyxen, AURORA, & Love Fame Tragedy, landing in Triple J Unearthed’s Top 50 most played acts twice in her budding career.
Following on from her feature in Wolfjay's dreamy #DIYSupergroup track “Very Soon, Very Frequent” - Austen unveils the start of a new era with her latest single “Worse Things”. The song describes her experience with anxiety, and “the way people say ‘but worse things could happen’”. Her detached, ironic commentary on panic attacks glides over jangly guitars, leaning further into the indie pop sounds inspired by the likes of Lily Allen and Sky Ferreira.
Austen, who grew up in Dalby, regional QLD - says about the track; “It’s kind of turned into my mantra lately, so it feels especially fitting to release this now. To me the song feels like looking at anxiety through this nostalgic, rose-tinged lens and being able to detach from it for a few minutes.”
