Fantasy Rainbow is the moniker of Manchester-based musician Oliver Catt. After playing in various local bands since his early teens, Catt decided to start his own project that combined sun-drenched melodies and youthful frets which invigorate his pop tendencies.
In 2011 Catt stormed into the musical blogosphere with a lo-fi demo that he recorded with the only other part-time member of Fantasy Rainbow -- best friend Jonathan Coddington -- who offered his production abilities in their hastily created bedroom studio. The frenetic pace that Catt worked at ensured that his first EPs, Demo #1, Teens EP, and No Hope. Not Ever were released on indie label Tiny Lights Recordings that year. At the tender age of 18, Catt had built a small following and received plaudits for his impressive early releases as well as airplay on Xfm and BBC 6Music, and drew comparisons to Deerhunter, Wavves, and Cloud Nothings.
Catt played his live shows in various formations that could have ranged from a solo performance, a two-piece or three-piece, depending on who was available for each gig. The hype his live shows garnered alerted fans and labels alike and the raucous performances eventually led to a deal with Heist or Hit Records for his debut full-length, Bos Taurus. Sessions for this record took place at Sputnik Sound Studios in Nashville, Tennessee -- the home of Grammy Award-winning producer Vance Powell (Jack White, Jars of Clay). The album was produced by Ed Spear, who invited Catt out to Nashville following a drunken encounter at the Deaf Institute in Manchester. ~ Scott Kerr
