About Jan Wouter
Jan Wouter Oostenrijk (JWO) completed his professional jazz guitar studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam (1994) . He got the “Gouden Notenkraker” award for his contribution to the Dutch live music with Moroccan formation Raï -land (1996). In the last 10 years or so he has become a succesfull international artist known for innovating the crossover Between Sharqi Blues and Maghreb Jazz. Technically gifted, original, with emotion and a sense of adventure, navigating the crosscurrents between guitar-led jazz, rock and Northafrican music..JWO toured with his band in Europe, Morocco, Algeria, Tunesia, Egypt and Sudan .
JWO released 4 solo albums. Open up your eyes in 2000 with the song 'my friend Samir that reached nr 1 in the Northafrican top40 on the Ethnocloud listings. The album Maghreb Jazz Guitar in 2006 that got a Radioindy “Golden Artist” award for best new music in the USA.Their interpretation of famous jazz tune Caravan  by Duke Ellington appeared on an EMI/ Warner compilation that included artists like James Brown, George Duke and Natacha Atlas. In 2013 JWO released the album “Sharqi Blues” with Algerian Karim Ziad on drums (Joe Zawinul, Cheb Khaled) In 2015 JWO released the CD single “Gnawa in Your Soul”  with Voice of Arab finalist Farid Ghannam from Morocco
He runs his own guitarschool “Gitaarschool Amsterdam” and is founder of “Gitaarschool Nederland” a platform for Dutch guitar professionals in music education.
